I'm shitting myself, I've lost £400

So every 2y I get a new phone upgrade, except I have young kids so I CBA to have a snazzy phone so I usually sell the phone on eBay or FB marketplace and then have a little bit of treat money (usually goes on kids!)

Listed phone on eBay, iphone12. Sold it for £450. Bought postage from DPD (who might I add I have always seen as the safest most reputable courier, with tracking, delivery windows etc) for about £8. Dropped it off at DpD parcel shop which happened to be an Argos near me. It was really busy when I dropped it off and the girl taped the label to the top and put it in a pile. I got a tracking card receipt thingy.

Yesterday I got a notification that it had been delivered. It was meant to be next day but I dropped it off last Sunday so seems slow but ok - checked tracking and it had been left at Argos for 3 days before it was collected. I messaged my buyer on eBay to check all ok - he hadn't received it, although it is a business so says he will check tomorrow to see if it's been left. The business name is a man's name think EDWARD JONES and the tracking is saying signed for by Edward.

Anyway he messages me this morning to say nothing has been delivered. Then 10mins later I got another email from DPD to say my parcel has been delivered. I messaged the buyer again thinking maybe it just got held up. This time he has received a parcel - but inside is a Lego kit not an iPhone!

I haven't sold or posted any Lego kits. The parcel had my label and return address on it - he has shown me photographs.

So that means my iPhone is off out delivered to some person somewhere. I am devastated. Can anyone suggest anything I can do. I have asked DPD to look into it for me and they are calling me tomorrow morning.

Glad it’s all sorted out.

There are a number of companies that also buy phones and other devices from you including Apple and mobile networks. Might be an easier stress free way to sell in future. I do it anytime I have something to sell and just go with whoever is offering me the most.

OP, it would have been courteous of you to thank everyone on here who has tried suggestions to help you!

Twilightimmortal · 19/09/2022 07:48

Why should she thank everyone its already sorted?

Would be courteous if you read the thread.

How weird! She doesn't need to thank anyone

jazzyoldjim · 19/09/2022 10:05

@Mitzi067 huh?! 😂

I worked this out all by myself thank you. Thanks to me for my eBay sleuthing oh and thanks to wild good fortune and thanks to dpd for not being crooks in this instance.

thinking of it though…. I wonder if the guy ordered lego and a phone and that’s part of the scam? They delivered both parcels, he has your phone but has another DPD parcel sent by same service and shows you that pretending that’s what he got instead….

This is my thinking too, funny that the Lego was bought from someone in the same area as you, dropped off at same Argos shop and delivered to same area no doubt... Maybe got Lego sent to same address under a different name ,or even to a address close by ?.

jazzyoldjim · 19/09/2022 13:41

I think what happened was, me and Lego seller both dropped parcels off at the same DPD drop shop. When the courier came to collect them he's put my label onto two parcels by mistake. The Lego reached my buyer first so therefore tracking was updated as delivered, when the other parcel was scanned at the depot the tracking was showing as delivered so they probably realised their mistake, plus by now I'd reported it as missing so it was RTS.

This is an absolutely insane way of getting yourself a few quid up front

Doingprettywellthanks · 19/09/2022 14:15

Op - in terms of how you’re going to manage finances in future - what’s your plan? I recall you from other threads - you are in a very financially vulnerable position

Lullab · 22/09/2022 22:03

Check the recipient's recent feedback and see how long he has been on ebay. If he has left negative feedback for anyone, try contacting them. I have had a few scammers buying on ebay and luckily, with a bit of detective work, I have managed to call them out and ebay has sided with me.

It is a new phone….

My first thought was that he was scamming me but he has lots of positive feedback on eBay and he has sent me photos of the delivered Lego and the label fixed onto the box it came in and the two lots of deliveries seems odd and suspicious.

DPD should have included a photo of the delivered parcel with their tracking info so you should be able to tell whether it's the parcel you sent or whether he's scamming you.

You read that the OP has the phone back, right? How would that be a scam?

LuckyLil · 24/09/2022 20:50

So does the geezer still want the phone?

Blondeshavemorefun · 25/09/2022 08:03

Glad you got phone back

maybe take to local cex or look online to send it to them as usually a good price

or does eBay buyer want it still
