I'm shitting myself, I've lost £400

So every 2y I get a new phone upgrade, except I have young kids so I CBA to have a snazzy phone so I usually sell the phone on eBay or FB marketplace and then have a little bit of treat money (usually goes on kids!)

Listed phone on eBay, iphone12. Sold it for £450. Bought postage from DPD (who might I add I have always seen as the safest most reputable courier, with tracking, delivery windows etc) for about £8. Dropped it off at DpD parcel shop which happened to be an Argos near me. It was really busy when I dropped it off and the girl taped the label to the top and put it in a pile. I got a tracking card receipt thingy.

Yesterday I got a notification that it had been delivered. It was meant to be next day but I dropped it off last Sunday so seems slow but ok - checked tracking and it had been left at Argos for 3 days before it was collected. I messaged my buyer on eBay to check all ok - he hadn't received it, although it is a business so says he will check tomorrow to see if it's been left. The business name is a man's name think EDWARD JONES and the tracking is saying signed for by Edward.

Anyway he messages me this morning to say nothing has been delivered. Then 10mins later I got another email from DPD to say my parcel has been delivered. I messaged the buyer again thinking maybe it just got held up. This time he has received a parcel - but inside is a Lego kit not an iPhone!

I haven't sold or posted any Lego kits. The parcel had my label and return address on it - he has shown me photographs.

So that means my iPhone is off out delivered to some person somewhere. I am devastated. Can anyone suggest anything I can do. I have asked DPD to look into it for me and they are calling me tomorrow morning.

DPD are notoriously crap in general and some drivers just put the name of the recipient on it if it’s delivered and take a picture even if they just left it in a porch or posted it through the letterbox.
I hope you get the phone back!

It could be a scam by the Ebay buyer or phone could've been replaced by Lego.

What I'm wondering is if it's a £400 phone why did you only get the £100 insurance via Ebay?

As per what @FirewomanSam says - I deliberately haven't got an upgrade on my iphone for the past 3 years now only because I don't need/want one (I hate the hassle of learning about a new phone) but also the hassle when it comes to sell the old one, if you do, can be a pain. It's not a free upgrade you pay for it!

Absolutely right!
Who NEEDS a brand new phone?
Mine is a second hand one from family member and so old that Apple won’t give any trade in on it-
They seem to do the same things - so why bother upgrading?
NO such thing as “free “upgrades- they get their pound of flesh out of the contract.

He is scamming u

pollymere · 16/09/2022 18:22

DPD are dreadful for this. I'd sell any future phones in CEX. Sounds like a real hassle otherwise x

wentworthinmate · 16/09/2022 18:24

He has your phone and trying to make out YOU are scamming him. Contact eBay straight away and read his feedback details.

I do hope it’s the phone !
Please please don’t fall for this “ upgrade” crap the phone companies try to fool you with.

Try reading the full thread. DPD messed up. This is not a scam.

I cannot comprehend how foolish you are.

every time you upgrade your phone you basically take out a hire purchase agreement. If you’re short of money convert to line rental only and save yourself £60 a month. Save for a year. You have 720 a month not the puny £450.

I am not surprised your credit is shot if this is how you function.

How is this helpful? OP has explained that she is unable to get credit any other way. I wouldn't personally be doing this but it's OP's decision made with little option available. It's not very nice to be so rude

PeachyPeachTrees · 16/09/2022 18:48

I sold my old phone to CEX shop and got a good deal, plus it's cash straight away, and no worries about posting or scamming etc.

db33 · 16/09/2022 18:52

I’ve been an eBay seller for many years and have had so many people pull this scam! It is so much more likely the buyer trying to rip you off than an argos employee who wouldn’t know what was in the parcel to risk their job over swapping the contents.
We used to sell expensive jewellery and once had someone claim we had sent a crappy used beauty product instead of a nice piece of jewellery. We called their bluff and threatened legal action and they went away.
As far as eBay are concerned, your parcel has been signed for by the buyer, which is proof of delivery and they are actually getting better at realising these scams.
Report it to them immediately, along with any receipts, photos of delivery etc.
Its highly likely he’s done this before and they’ll have record of it.
I now photograph every single item I post, no matter how cheap, alongside the shipping label, clearly showing the buyers details. And if I sell multiple items to the same buyer I go as far as holding the padded envelope to the light to photograph it holding the contents!!
Thankfulky most people are honest but there are always some low lives trying to steal what they can and they ruin it for everyone.
Hope you get it sorted.

Justme1234567 · 16/09/2022 18:53

When do you get the returned parcel

T1Dmama · 16/09/2022 18:57

I think you only get so long to block. I’d do it asap

Reveriesreverie · 16/09/2022 19:03

Did you disclose to the Argos person who dealt with you, the contents of the package? Were you asked to declare the contents and the value amount?

it's limited to people that knew the contents.

Report it as a theft to the 5-O.

McClaire · 16/09/2022 19:05

I can not see any reason for a person with a job to be a thief.
Maybe two packages came undone so were put back into packaging but got mixed up. Either that or he is a con-artist and he did get the phone.

McClaire · 16/09/2022 19:10

Yes, no need to be rude op suffering enough already X.

🙄yeah because £720 in year is so useful when you need cash NOW

There’s a good chance he’s telling the truth as the same thing has happened to me . I ordered a jewellery box and instead it was a cheap plastic toy in the box . Delivery drivers must swap things around and take items they take a fancy too. I lost out on £60 as I couldn’t prove that it was not delivered as I had signed for parcel. Complain to dpd , they usually investigate

Upgrading to a new phone must be costing you an arm and a leg - buy your own handset, get a sim only deal for £5-£6 a month.

Polly34 · 16/09/2022 20:10

Definitely

Mxyzptlk · 16/09/2022 20:12

So, two deliveries plus one found package? Very weird.
I hope it's your phone. 🤞
