He's into environmental issues, wants a slimmed down monarchy, embraces multiculturalism and his speech was warm and heartfelt.
He shook hands with the crowds outside the palace with genuine emotion.
I am not sure how i feel about how he treated Diana but he should always have married Camilla.

I'm a fan!

IchbineinBerlinerin · 10/09/2022 10:14

I'm not a royalist but I have some sympathy for him. He loved Camilla first (if I have that right) and he wasn't allowed to marry her. That must've been really difficult.

Not saying Diana deserved to be treated in any bad way, she was a wonderful person.

eldora · 10/09/2022 10:14

I think his treatment of Diana was despicable though. He smirked as he lied that he didn’t cheat on her.

I can’t look at Charles and Camilla without changing the channel. Lucky I watch little TV.

Maireas · 10/09/2022 10:14

I think that he could be a very positive and uniting figurehead through difficult times.

PolarPolly27 · 10/09/2022 10:15

I like Charles too. So much genuine warmth yesterday as he greeted people yesterday outside Buckingham Palace.

minipin · 10/09/2022 10:16

And me.

Maireas · 10/09/2022 10:17

His speech hit the right tone. Kind and inclusive, wise and conciliatory.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 10/09/2022 10:18

yes, i believe he is a good man

Sunglassesintherain11 · 10/09/2022 10:19

Of course you are NOT being unreasonable.

GetThatHelmetOn · 10/09/2022 10:19

I don’t sorry. The only way I can see his positives is by reminding myself that he is a top level member of the royal family.

Octomore · 10/09/2022 10:19

He's worryingly oblivious to money laundering issues.... accepting bags of cash is not a good look!

But if we have to have a monarch, having one who cares about environmental issues is a positive thing.

Octomore · 10/09/2022 10:21

Also, you all now that his speech will have been drafted and heavily edited by his team, not the man himself, right?

He will have had input, but a speech like that would never be left to chance. It would be vetted, screened, reviewed and reviewed again.

Octomore · 10/09/2022 10:21

^ know not now

I need to review my own posts!

Yep, down to the extra long eye contact with the camera at the end. All carefully orchestrated. People are gullible, though.

I was impressed with how he greeted people outside the palace. Genuine warmth and kindness in the way he shook hands and spoke to people. I think he will make a good King.

Absolutely this. It was more or less an arranged marriage by the point he married Diana. I don’t think any of us can imagine the pressure he must have felt to go through with it, knowing he loved someone else.

Octomore · 10/09/2022 10:27

It's the same with any big public speech by a major figure. They don't just jot a few notes down and speak from the heart - they plan exactly what response they want to provoke, and a whole team works to generate a speech/performance that will do it. It will have been rehearsed multiple times.

This isn't a specific criticism of Charles, but just the reality of how set piece speeches are approached in the modern world. Your emotional response is manipulated just like the scary music in a horror film makes you feel on edge even before anything bad happens.

This I do have sympathy for him about. They were both forced into a wholly unsuitable marriage, just for the sake of appearances.

He had the advantage that he went into it with his eyes open (he was older and he knew the deal), whereas she naively thought it was love (I doubt she had enough experience of loving relationships to tell the difference).

It was best for both of them that it ended.
