He's into environmental issues, wants a slimmed down monarchy, embraces multiculturalism and his speech was warm and heartfelt.
He shook hands with the crowds outside the palace with genuine emotion.
I am not sure how i feel about how he treated Diana but he should always have married Camilla.

As an aside king Charles dresses very very well.

William looks shameful in comparison.

malificent7 · 10/09/2022 12:08

I taught English for years so I know full well how speeches are crafted for rhetoric including the rule of three, emotive language and poignant pauses. I could probably annotate the speech and pick out all the rhetorical devices. I also know that someone would have helped him craft it.

However, the delivery was sincere and the handshaking outside the palace was too. I am no monarchist but if anyone has to be King, I am glad it's him.

Me too and don't think Diana was the saint people seem to think she was

MarshaBradyo · 10/09/2022 12:11

I like him he’s stepped into the role well

Hopefully he’ll be around for a while so he gets a good period of time as King

I like Camilla too

Maireas · 10/09/2022 12:13

Lovely tribute from Joan Armatrading.

Ginandthings · 10/09/2022 12:16

@CurlyhairedAssassin - he converted his Aston Martin (it’s a really old one) to run on bio fuel that’s produced from by products of wine and cheese, his other cars where possible are electric.
He has championed environmental causes for as long as I can remember and used to be laughed at for it.

Neverendingdust · 10/09/2022 12:20

I like him, yes he no doubt has his quirks and isn’t a perfect person but he has certainly followed his mothers example by seamlessly transitioning to the role of King. It’s going to be interesting to watch his future unfold.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 10/09/2022 12:20

what did joan armatrading say?

Luredbyapomegranate · 10/09/2022 12:21

I think he’s a bright and thoughtful man, genuinely curious about the world, and wanting to do some good. He could have dealt much better with the Diana situation, but it was a toxic set up and she was clearly very challenging.

I did some work with him once and he was passionate and interesting, but also a bit of a brat.

I always thought it would be better if he stepped aside for William just because having an elderly monarch from the get go isn’t great, plus the shadow of Diana.

But actually - I think I was wrong. I think there is a lot of modernising to be done, and it needs imagination and involves walking a fine line and I think he’ll be good at that. He’s a fair bit smarter than William, so if he can deal with the much needed modernising for 10 or 12 years that would be ideal. I hope he abdicates and hands over then though, pensioners being crowned isn’t a good long term survival strategy.

Blimpop · 10/09/2022 12:25

I do too 😃

blackbird77 · 10/09/2022 12:28

Me too OP. Charles has always been my favourite Royal. Always liked him.

Crikeyalmighty · 10/09/2022 12:41

Any bloke who is a huge Spike Milligan fan obviously has a really good sense of humour!! He also has been into organic etc before it was a really big thing. I also think he will be more 'invested' politically than the Queen- as far as he can be of course

Choconut · 10/09/2022 12:43

I agree and I like Camilla even more. A great couple.

Lunaduckdrop · 10/09/2022 12:44

If being monarch is an important job, I feel that 70 is too old to be starting it. I would have preferred that he stood aside in favour of William.

Choconut · 10/09/2022 12:45

Oh and he approved a bank holiday for Queen's funeral - top bloke.

HikingforScenery · 10/09/2022 12:45

I want to see how he treats all of his family, to decide. Not that it makes a joy of difference to him, I’m sure.

Bit ageist. Don't forget, he's had a long apprenticeship.

I don't think we should be judging any of their behaviour or facial expressions over the next few days. Their family is not like ours but The Queen was clearly loved by all of them and to be on public display at this moment must be awful no matter how privileged they are.

Good point

pompomdaisy · 10/09/2022 12:50

I liked seeing how his grandchildren want to sit on his knee. He must be a nice grandpa.

vera99 · 10/09/2022 12:52

If he has self identified as a woman he could still be a Queen and it would save having to change our anthem and would have sent out the right woke message to the world.😁

Love it 🤣🤣🤣!

starrynight21 · 10/09/2022 12:55

I like him, always have. Liked the way that the first think he and Camilla did after arriving back in London, was to greet the people who were waiting there. A lovely touch.

This thread is about Charles, not what people think about Diana. There is no doubt that he must have been under pressure however he clearly treated Diana very badly from the outset for example the 'whatever that means' about being in love.

I've just been watching the accession and noticed how impatient he appeared when there were items on the desk in his way when he went to sit down. I'm just not convinced about him or William (who looked bored through the whole ceremony), there's an arrogance about both of them imo.

The desk was way too small and he shouldn’t have had to sit there trying to play Tetris with items on the desk given the solemnity and historical importance of the occasion. It shouldn’t have taken so long for someone to notice what was happening and for him to have to catch their attention. That document will still be in existence hundreds of years from now and it had to be done correctly first time. No ink blotches or smudges on it and no bottle of ink spilt on it either because there was hardly room to move closer to the document to properly sign it.

Yes. And they must also be exhausted. It’s been non stop for them.

MsMiaWallace · 10/09/2022 13:00

I thought that Charles appeared more nervous about the inkwell bits. His face read more of a 'help!' to me.
