OK, it's been 24 hours now.

Can I say it yet?

Long live the king - any king! - you must be joking. How on earth can it be the 21st century and there is still a hereditary monarchy of 'special people with the right blood' who wear crowns, live in palaces and play a formal role in politics?

I can see from other threads that others feel upset and are following it all closely. This thread is not to deny those feelings and for sure Queen E worked hard shaking hands for a long time - but to say, WTF, bring on the republic please.

*Well there's the issue, you could say that about anything. If you don't take the time to understand what it's is or what they do. How can you make an educated decision?

Blind ignorance is dangerous*

l was waiting for this comment😂😂😂😂😂yeah l could do all the investigations in the world. It wouldn’t change my mind. It’s not like it isn’t forced down our throat continually what they do anyway.

l looked into it a bit at 16 or so. I’m 58 now, and have become more anti monarchy as l get older.

l don’t care how much they do for charity/ the Commonwealth ( which l disagree with) the U.K., the armed forces or any of it. In my mind they are just parasites who’ve protected a nonce.

BeyondMyWits · 10/09/2022 09:24

Another republican here. Watching the news, thousands of pounds worth of flowers being laid out in a park with piles of plastic tat, flags, teddies, stuffed corgis and helium filled union flag balloons.

Good grief how wasteful, a quid, 2, 5 to charity instead could make a huge difference... huuuuge.

It's the end of an era. The king will never gain that level of public support, would be better to let the whole privileged institution dissappear quietly instead of having a massively expensive coronation in the midst of a cost of living crisis.

OnlyEverAutumn · 10/09/2022 09:25

@cakeorwine the Republic pressure group are very sensibly keeping a very low profile at the moment - they’ll be time for that later.

OnlyEverAutumn · 10/09/2022 09:29

I’m always bemused by the “the royals do so much for charity” argument. That’s literally all they do! I have friends and acquaintances who have devoted their lives to helping others while AT THE SAME TIME, living on low wages, raising kids, caring for elderly relatives and running a house. And their work for charity is proper getting your hands dirty stuff, not cutting ribbons and eating fancy food 🙄.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/09/2022 08:57

To add to my last comment.

They are just very rich people leading a very rich life paid for by taxation of people who can’t afford to buy food or turn on the heating’

Just parasites. I’m not interested enough to learn the life of a parasite.

Ah, so you're happy to recognise the cost of the royal family while ignoring the benefit? The UK government gets far more from the crown estate than they pay out to maintain the royals (like 3x more).

You can argue on moral grounds if you like, but the economics are not in your favour.

EugeneLevysEyebrow · 10/09/2022 09:33

I find it staggering that on the one hand some people can be so upset and moved by the death of a stranger, yet on the other hand remain largely unbothered by the horrific levels of poverty in this country.

Either you care about people beyond your immediate family and friends, or you don’t. You can’t have it both ways.

That doesn't even make sense. Being upset by the death of the queen, and being unbothered about poverty are not mutually exclusive view points. You've just taken something you don't like, and something no one likes and claimed we must pick one or the other.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/09/2022 09:38

I’m not particularly arguing on moral or grounds. I don’t agree with the monarchy End of.

Why are you on a Rebuplican thread? Go on one of the millions of weeping threads instead.

I thought this was a thread for the Republican party. Title needs to be more specific.😉

arghpleasestop · 10/09/2022 09:45

Republican party! LOLZ. Well, I suppose they must be called that because as they would see it they are upholding the values of the Republic of the USA. So there's kind of a link.

Meanwhile over on the other AIBU thread about the Prince of Wales and should this title be allowed as he is English and Wales is Welsh, I see debate is raging about the United aspect of the United Kingdom.

It would be really good if some of all this discussion the Queen's death has prompted could be represented on the actual TV news. TBF all the newsreaders are probably thinking this too after 36 hrs of sombre and sentimental.

Yes I am not a bot. Or a troll. Or in the employment of a foreign power. Or from the Daily Mail. Or any of that. I am an actual MNer🙄

My username not yours!

The royal family stopping fascism: erm they flirted seriously with Nazism in the 1930s. And if you think Charles is an environmentalist, then I have a bridge you might like to buy.

Mamamia7962 · 10/09/2022 10:07

Woodland mummy - Who is forcing you to be sad? My life is carrying on as normal the same as everyone else I know.

Why would your friend's wedding be ruined?

SerendipityJane · 10/09/2022 10:20

Discovereads · 09/09/2022 22:19

The last time we had a republic didn’t work out so good for us.

We've never had a republic.

So much for the standard of debate here then.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/09/2022 11:07

Didn’t Oliver Cromwell dispose the king for a bit?

Isnt that a republic?

FourChimneys · 10/09/2022 11:19

I had a very quick peep at the BBC website earlier. Still wall to wall queen stuff. Where is the actual news? And where is the counterbalance? It is all so biased.

"A nation in mourning" apparently. Well, count me out of that, I'm in quite a cheerful mood, and looking forward to a fun event later today.

AuxArmesCitoyens · 10/09/2022 11:43

i think the gotcha is cromwell ruled over a theocracy

greenhousegal · 10/09/2022 12:09

Thank God for Borrow Box, Netflix, YouTube etc., and anything that's any colour other than black, and any tone other than sombre.

I don't know how the mainstream channels can hope to fill the next week with death. People will get fed up listening to it day after day, there is only so much one can take of this natural event, let's face it.

Out for a long walk soon, weather is great, washing billowing on the line, Vive la Republique and I like cake too.

arghpleasestop · 10/09/2022 12:10

Unfortunately Oliver Cromwell was a bit of a bastard. So his version of a republic might not be a role model. He so disliked bowing down to the King Charles of his own time - King Charles 1 - that he had him executed. Ulp.

I wouldn't go that far 😎I'd be fine for the Windsors to step down and move quietly to the country. They could keep their oodles of private wealth, although pay proper tax on it all like the rest of us.

greenhousegal - Marie Antoinette never actually said "let them eat cake".

OhMammaMia · 10/09/2022 12:44

QueenAstrid · 09/09/2022 22:27

I read this on Fb today which sums up the total family for me:

Elizabeth is dead, and the second longest royal reign in human history is over.

I won't be mocking anyone over their grief, however I will say that now would be a good time to abolish the monarchy, and bring this embarrassing, undemocratic, tax-dodging, pervert protecting, elitism drenched anachronism to an end once and for all.

Well said.

Oh I know that, silly!

But you know what? That phrase is attributed to her, and symbolises the derision and lack of empathy some in power have towards their subjects/citizens.

I seriously doubt there is one member of the RF that has to worry about keeping the lights on and the heating going this Winter, but the eco credentials of some (like KC3) are laughable when you consider how much procured energy he uses daily. While simultaneously advocating a certain concern for the environment. Just an example of "cake".
