OK, it's been 24 hours now.

Can I say it yet?

Long live the king - any king! - you must be joking. How on earth can it be the 21st century and there is still a hereditary monarchy of 'special people with the right blood' who wear crowns, live in palaces and play a formal role in politics?

I can see from other threads that others feel upset and are following it all closely. This thread is not to deny those feelings and for sure Queen E worked hard shaking hands for a long time - but to say, WTF, bring on the republic please.

Yes they have dedicated their lives.

I don't think what we see now will be repeated for Charles or William.

The Queen had a long time to establish her role as Monarch. We all know what Charles has done over the years.

The last time we had a republic didn’t work out so good for us.

You can say ghsg shout a lot of monarchs too. At least they don't kill you now if you are a different shade of Christian to the current monarch.

"Not allowed to express his views anymore.

A God given right to rule is not the best system of democracy"

I think the queen has spoken about the Environment and has written thousands of letters of sorrow supporting countries and individuals around the world

"I don’t know why Macron thinks he can speak for the world. I personally know nobody who loves or even respects your royal family."

I wouldn't go on the internet or watch tv as you will have a real issue with your grip on reality Grin

My grip on reality is in no way challenged by the obsequious fawning I see online and on TV. My comment was quite clearly in relation to people I know personally, not a self-selecting bunch of professional mourners.

Got to keep out of politics.

That's the rules.

Otherwise they get political.

Thank God for this thread.

l really want to know about the energy crisis. And I’ve have to go through piles of dirge to find anything. I’m avoiding all tv news. When l last watched it, they were showing a picture of the gate at Balmoral for hours….why?

l don’t really feel anything at all. Nothing. It’s had zero effect on me. Dd is doing politics A level. It’s had zero effect on her classmates.

The young don’t support the monarchy but we are subject to never ending rubbish about it.

maeveiscurious · 10/09/2022 08:39

@sammylady37

I have messages from all over the world from friends who are American Danish and Australian who feel her loss.

Thank you for sharing your narrow, view of the world. I suspect your are a MAGA

Yes they have dedicated their lives

To what?😂Eating nice food, wearing posh clothes, going to posh places?

l could dedicate my life to that. Didn’t Queenie pay minimum wage in the palace?

neverbeenskiing · 10/09/2022 08:42

It's sad when anyone dies. But I'm don't personally feel upset that someone I've never met who lived an incredibly privileged life died at the grand old age of 96, in a place they loved with family at their side.

So now we have a rich old man wearing the big shiny gold hat instead of the rich old lady who used to wear the big shiny gold hat, it doesn't make any difference to me.

I will be avoiding the news coverage partly because I find it dull but also because the ostentatious displays of wealth that will no doubt surround the upcoming coronation, at a time when so many of the families I work with are struggling to meet their children's most basic needs, will make me feel queasy. I dread to think how much all the pomp and ceremony is going to cost.

If anything, this non stop rolling coverage will drive people further away from the Monarchy.

At least we have other distractions nowadays.

Sigh. I didn’t extrapolate my personal experience and make it my ‘view of the world’. In fact, doing that was exactly what I posted criticising Macron for doing. I spoke solely of my personal experience. Can you not see that, in your rush to prove that you know so many people internationally who ‘feel her loss’?

And your suspicious are entirely incorrect, but oh so boringly predictable.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/09/2022 08:51

Why? I’m a Republican. I have no interest at all in what they do. They’re just very very rich people leading a very rich life.

BigBlueHandbag · 10/09/2022 08:52

It’s a shame that this thread has debate about the merits or demerits of monarchy; it would be nice to have a corner of mumsnet that was an ocean of republican sanity with no defenders of feudalism chipping in! Thank you to OP for starting it!

I’m an ardent republican and will be until I die. It is completely incomprensible to me that we give special power, wealth & status to one family because of an accident of birth. It is madness! And totally indefensible. I want to be a citizen, not a subject. The U.K. is wildly undemocratic, and clearly still missing being an empire. The day I bow or curtsy before someone who is just a regular human like me or you but who is part of a ‘special’ family is the day I’ve lost my mind, it’s never going to happen! Fair enough people can mourn if they’re sad but don’t ask me to give two hoots that a wealthy privileged woman has died at a ripe old age in one of her many palaces, surrounded by people ensuring her every need was met to the end. Especially when one of her last acts in life was to bail out her sex offender son.

The address by Charles reminded me of why I think the institution of monarch is such a stain on Britain - all the stuff about the many countries we supposedly offer leadership to. (E.g. “And wherever you may live in the United Kingdom, or in the realms and territories across the world”). How arrogant to think we should have any role in any other nation. We can’t even run our own country well. The whole thing is feudalistic, imperialistic nonsense. It’s the antithesis of democratic socialism and egalitarianism.

I hope there will be a republic in my lifetime. I doubt it’ll happen though. So for now it’s a comfort to know there are others who want that too.

InsertPunHere · 10/09/2022 08:54

I know it’s historically significant but I’m already sick of it all. Charles is so unlikeable he will be a boon to the republican movements across the commonwealth.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/09/2022 08:57

To add to my last comment.

They are just very rich people leading a very rich life paid for by taxation of people who can’t afford to buy food or turn on the heating’

Just parasites. I’m not interested enough to learn the life of a parasite.

jetadore · 10/09/2022 08:58

Amen! Parasite in chief has returned to the lizard brethren in the mothership.

donttalkaboutbookclub · 10/09/2022 08:59

Republican here as well, hi. Always been one and always will be. Glad of this thread. I feel that we just need a dissenting voice now to question what's being said about the royals oh so obsequiously and reverently.

cakeorwine · 10/09/2022 09:03

You know how people say that the BBC should represent all views.

Have their been any Republican views expressed on news channels, Vox pops etc....

Or would that upset the Daily Mail?

"Outrage as Republican voice heard on BBC"

Well there's the issue, you could say that about anything. If you don't take the time to understand what it's is or what they do. How can you make an educated decision?

Blind ignorance is dangerous

AuntieMarys · 10/09/2022 09:04

If they stopped what they were doing - opening places, raising awareness of charities, giving out awards etc,

And this was done by an elected Head of State (like in other countries), life would carry on.

It's not like God gave them this special ability to meet people and to raise awareness.

cakeorwine · 10/09/2022 09:08

Will Charles do a tour of the Commonwealth to meet his subjects?

Nosizefitsalll · 10/09/2022 09:09

Mamamia7962 · 09/09/2022 22:32

Why have you name changed?

Possibly because it’s an emotive subject where people in a heightened state of emotion (grief) can be offended by things that wouldn’t usually bother them and it may become contentious?
