OK, it's been 24 hours now.

Can I say it yet?

Long live the king - any king! - you must be joking. How on earth can it be the 21st century and there is still a hereditary monarchy of 'special people with the right blood' who wear crowns, live in palaces and play a formal role in politics?

I can see from other threads that others feel upset and are following it all closely. This thread is not to deny those feelings and for sure Queen E worked hard shaking hands for a long time - but to say, WTF, bring on the republic please.

OP posts:

Am I being unreasonable?

You may have a long wait.....

felulageller · 09/09/2022 22:12

Yes!

Where are all the republicans?

This sycophancy is giving me a headache.

I can't even listen to happy music on the radio!

On a positive note, my friend and I just commented this morning on how rare an opportunity it is to be able to use the word "sycophancy" 12 times before breakfast...

Hear hear OP

Discovereads · 09/09/2022 22:19

The last time we had a republic didn’t work out so good for us.

TheChosenTwo · 09/09/2022 22:22

I’m here. Being careful not to be disrespectful, it’s sad for her family but she didn’t mean anything personal to me, I never met her, she didn’t touch my life in any way. I went out of my way to avoid jubilee street parties etc, just not my thing to be waving flags and celebrating a monarchy I’m opposed to.
Not that I wished her harm in any way, just totally indifferent.
I get why it’s a big deal, I’m just not getting swept up in any of it. On the day of the funeral I will be offering the kids a trip to the beach.

QueenAstrid · 09/09/2022 22:27

I read this on Fb today which sums up the total family for me:

Elizabeth is dead, and the second longest royal reign in human history is over.

I won't be mocking anyone over their grief, however I will say that now would be a good time to abolish the monarchy, and bring this embarrassing, undemocratic, tax-dodging, pervert protecting, elitism drenched anachronism to an end once and for all.

cakeorwine · 09/09/2022 22:27

Strong Republican here - once the funeral has taken place, I do wonder how things will change.

But these conversations should probably wait.

arghpleasestop · 09/09/2022 22:28

When I NC-ed for this thread I did think of Olive Cromwell for my username ... but I'm not holding up that murderous git OC as a role model either

@Discovereads seems to have worked out for most countries who removed their monarchy- think we are the only ones to go backwards !

Also would you look at a country like Myanmar and say 'democracy didn't work out so well for them the last time ' ?

If one failed attempt hundreds of years ago is your reasoning for supporting the monarchy I think that says a lot 😄

Mamamia7962 · 09/09/2022 22:32

Why have you name changed?

OnlyEverAutumn · 09/09/2022 22:32

@Discovereads wow! Seriously 😂

Hello fellow republicans - it’s good to be with my people 😄

Legrandsophie · 09/09/2022 22:33

@littlefirecar

How did it work out for Russia? And China? Both beacons of human rights.

Lunar270 · 09/09/2022 22:33

Does anyone know at what point a referendum would take place to decide whether the monarchy should continue?

I have no ill feelings for the royal family but think it's all a bit archaic and unecessary. I don't care how much money they bring to this country as the human construct that is monarchy, should really be consigned to the history books.

OnlyEverAutumn · 09/09/2022 22:33

@TheChosenTwo nooooo!!!! I’m going to the beach and I want to be on my own 😂

This morning, all the radio stations were just playing mournful music. Or sad songs. I think that the danger is the OTT reaction of the media to try to make people feel sad.

OnlyEverAutumn · 09/09/2022 22:35

@Legrandsophie why not look at Ireland instead - a place with a President that seems to work very well. Clearly no one is aspiring to be like Russia FFS 🙄

Do you know there are many countries in the world that have a different constitutional model to ours?

Ireland is one example.

Signing in. Power to the people!

I wonder how this will affect countries where the Queen was Head of State?

Canada and Australia for example.

FourChimneys · 09/09/2022 22:37

I agree. Such a fuss, especially on the BBC. The queen has died, Charles is the king, there will be a funeral, date to be announced. Now can we all move on please?

We switched R4 off this morning and I played some cheerful CDs.

I have plans for both Saturday 17th and Monday 19th and will carry on with them. If anyone finds that disrespectful then that is their problem, it is certainly not mine. Mourning a total stranger is not compulsory.

The ChosenTwo have a great time at the beach, might see you there.

Meifly · 09/09/2022 22:38

I feel sorry for her family as I would for anyone who has lost someone but I feel no personal grief over someone who I feel lived a life representing an outdated and pointless institution

R.I.P to her as a human being, not to her as a monarch

It’s not like the only two types of government out there are a republic or a monarchy.
🙄

I will be watching the funeral - I watched Diana's as well. It's a moment of history. I did watch the 96 gun salute today.

My presence at this and at watching the funeral does not mean I support the Monarchy. It's a moment of history though
