OK, it's been 24 hours now.

Can I say it yet?

Long live the king - any king! - you must be joking. How on earth can it be the 21st century and there is still a hereditary monarchy of 'special people with the right blood' who wear crowns, live in palaces and play a formal role in politics?

I can see from other threads that others feel upset and are following it all closely. This thread is not to deny those feelings and for sure Queen E worked hard shaking hands for a long time - but to say, WTF, bring on the republic please.

According to the Accession proclamation, God gives them the right to reign over us.

It was interesting to see the accession but we are living in the past.

Legrandsophie · 10/09/2022 18:18

@VivX

The crown estate is already open to visitors. Hampton Court is part of the royal estate. As is the Tower of London and buckingham palace. All are open to visitors- just not when they are being used for official business.

Sandrigham and Balmoral are privately owned by the family. They were purchased with money not belonging to the crown. We wouldn’t have access to them even if the monarchy was abolished.

Getagrip123 · 10/09/2022 18:19

Does anyone ever wonder what would have happened if the Queen had died at the height of Covid restrictions?
Do you think they would have limited mourners at her funeral to the 30 or so who were permitted to attend family funerals? Restricted who could attend? Had social distancing in place?
Would they hell.

It would be interesting to find out where they got the funds to purchase the privately owned estates in the first place.

I'm a atheist their proclamation, gives them nothing in my eyes.

In reality the crown estate should be passed to the people, the fact that so much is owned in this country by the crown is offensive, and they probably bought it with Our money.

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂Christ who cares what a mythological being thinks about rights?😂😂😂😂

HMSSophia · 10/09/2022 18:48

We have to have a head of state. Without the monarchy we'd be looking at hmmm Johnston Or Mary berry.

AuxArmesCitoyens · 10/09/2022 18:49

Yawn. Try reading the thread.

arghpleasestop · 10/09/2022 18:58

I did not know that Sandringham and Balmoral are the RF's private houses! Well that's good news - this means they have somewhere very acceptable to go if they were to be stood down.

Gosh bit of a faux pas from KC3 to the footman caught on film in the Tweet PP shared. What happens if Charles is not nice with managing his staff. Who is the line manager above him that gives him a bollocking and sends him for 180 degree feedback training?

@littlefirecar

How did it work out for Russia? And China? Both beacons of human rights.

Well said- if that’s what some people think then go and live in a republic! I am sick of people trashing the Monarchy!!

Love to....

But that's been made a bit harder

Vive la France and all

AuxArmesCitoyens · 10/09/2022 19:11

Hmmm. Some people seem to have confused constitutional monarchies with fascist dictatorships.

purplecheesecat · 10/09/2022 19:12

Not every country without a monarchy is a despotic state like Russia! Many politically stable countries are republics, for example France. And if you don’t like something, for example me being a republican who disagrees with the monarchy, then you are within your rights to express your opinion that you want this to change.
Saying that ‘I am sick of people trashing the monarchy’ ie. that people should not be doing this, actually seems more of an authoritarian, Russian-style viewpoint, against people’s freedom of speech to criticise their leaders.

TarasHarp55 · 10/09/2022 19:25

Strong republican here. Have read Norman Bakers book...."And What Do You Do". I defy anyone to read that and still think a monarchy is a good thing.

TarasHarp55 · 10/09/2022 19:39

Rosewaterblossom · 09/09/2022 23:43

The alternative to the monarchy is no better though. At least the monarchy are above politics. Yes we could vote in a "president " but our track record for voting in prime ministers is hardly great is it, so I wouldn't hold out much hope for a good president.

But would you have voted Charles in as prime minister? probably not yet we're stuck with him. He didn't even have to try.

CaptaNoctem · 10/09/2022 19:43

Lifelong republican here.

I'm ignoring all this ridiculous forelock tugging and absolutely fuming that I have had another Prince of Wales imposed already and so quickly too! Makes you wonder if they were trying to avoid a Welsh protest.

I'm sick to death with a constant stream of sad songs and forelock tugging.

I didn't know her, very few did, inc you, she had zero impact on me and at 96, her life, even for a monarchist, should be celebrated, not dressed in sack cloth whipping ones self in pseudo grief.

Its pathetic.

VivX · 10/09/2022 20:04

@Legrandsophie

I don't think you can have read my previous comment properly because I had already made the point that "the royal family [could] go off to live in Balmoral or Sandringham, which are both privately owned unlike the crown estate."

I also never said any said anything about having access to Balmoral or Sandringham.
So why you're making a strawman argument about not being able to visit them is anyone's guess.

And in any case, you've completely missed the point - which was not to do with whether any crown estate properties could be visited or not:

My reply to you was in direct response to your earlier comment (where you said "Here’s a fact- in the real world the end of the monarchy would mean the short tears selling off of royal assets")
The point is that they don't need to be sold off.

It's a logical fallacy that end of the monarchy means having to sell off the crown estate

Some people (not looking anyone on this thread in particular) wish the U.K. to fall. Russia especially would do anything to undermine our constitution and our democracy.
Whatever you feel about the Royal Family - it is there to ensure the continuity and stability of this country and the common wealth.
Yes we must reduce the costs significantly and reroute the money to families in need. Yes it needs to be reduced in size.
To lose it altogether is a grave error

I think the UK would carry on without a Royal Family.

Having a Head of State who claims to be there by the divine right of God is not a good system of democracy.

I don't think the UK would fail just because we decided to have a Head of State like Ireland.

Why do you think we would fail?

I wish we had things like FPTP and a proper written constitution. Not this mish mash approach that we seem to have.
