The King just did you pleb !

Can you explain what you mean by pleb?
I know the bank holiday had already been announced. 🤦‍♀️
Can you not understand that it was an exclamation of how bad this was for lots of people? That it has happened and it’s going to cause a load of shit.

So all international flights are cancelled or rerouted for a day? Rubbish

Sorry what? A relative if mine is flying abroad for a work on the 19th. They surely can't cancel all flights to and from the UK and reroute all flights which fly over?

For those saying that employers have to give you the day off, or add a day to your leave to be used at a later date, seems they don't need to do either. According to this gov.uk page there is no statutory right to bank holidays off

No idea what happened to that link, I'll try again

If full time employees are getting the bank holiday then those that don’t work Mondays, either because they are part time, work compressed hours or work across other days of the week will have to be given it as well.

If your contract of employment/staff handbook/annual leave policy says you get x days plus bank holidays then you are contractually entitled to them. If it says you get eg 28 days including bank holidays then you won’t.

You can’t just delay a patients appointment one day, consultants have fixed slots for clinics and booked up months in advance. The following day they could be on a ward round/in theatre etc. Also clinics need the space so the following day another consultants clinic will be in, you can’t see people on the car park. Let alone all the elective day surgery that has to be cancelled due to staff being off. Bank holiday NHS staffing is like weekend or night level of staffing.

And many things are multi day procedures - for my chemo I have a blood test on Monday (any sooner and I risk white blood cells not being back up to acceptable levels), see the oncologist on Tuesday for review, who then prescribes the drugs for infusion on Wednesday. I assume there are ways to compress this but it's a lot of work rearranging things in a short space of time for already stretched NHS staff.

T this was surely just a witty exchange?!
one person said ‘They can’t just announce a Bank Holiday’
another person said ‘I rather think they just did…’ which was in itself funny
and then another person said ‘The King did, you pleb’
which was even funnier ie it was not ‘they ‘ but the King and intended to be funny, not insulting!!??
I just read it as it as a clever and entertaining exchange, not an insult….

It’s such a pain. I work in obstetrics as a sonographer. All those people with Planned scans will have to be cancelled and fit in somewhere. We will be expected to work extra to make up for it. As I am part time I get bank hold pro rata and so will end up oweing hours back. I’ve already used up/ planned all my leave so I will have to work to make it up.

BestCatMumEver · 11/09/2022 10:02

I’m also part time so won’t get a whole days annual leave for the bank holiday.

Alternatively your Trust can allow you to work as normal and give you the BH time later.

Bodice · 11/09/2022 11:09

I won’t be able to work as normal as my kids will be off school
