Or don't and wait for it to be announced later today.

Woodsie54 · 10/09/2022 14:46

Agree that they should get on with naming the day. Unfortuantely the people making this decision have not or ever been in business or had to organise children etc. It could be next Saturday which not be a BH but of course would inerfere with sport second weekend in a row

If it was going to be a weekend, they wouldn’t have announced it was a bank holiday.

CrabbitBastard · 10/09/2022 13:04

What roads will be closed and will they be reopened the next day?

There will be several exclusion zones where no traffic can pass, even emergency vehicles.

CeeJay81 · 10/09/2022 14:49

I really hope supermarkets close. People can go without shopping for a few hours at least. Us supermarket workers would like to watch the funeral too.

OnceAgainWithFeeling · 10/09/2022 14:50

Some roads will be closed for then next 2 weeks. Some for several days after the funeral to allow everything to be dismantled and moved out.

Bestcatmum · 10/09/2022 14:54

I'm patient facing but have weekends and bank holidays off in my dept. I just don't know if we will be allowed to have the bank holiday at this short notice. Our clinics are booked weeks ahead.
Haven't heard anything from work yet.
Anyone else in the same position?

Let's say you know, in which case it is decided. Why can't this information be shared quickly so that everyone that will be affected by it can make plans?
It would have been especially useful if it had been shared yesterday.

These events follow a protocol and things have to happen in a particular order and announcements must be done by the correct people or departments etc..

Sport will be off no matter what I'd imagine - the police will be needed for crowd control

KatherineJaneway · 10/09/2022 15:11

kateandme · 10/09/2022 14:08

What if you already booked?

Not sure if they will cancel or go ahead.

Glittertwins · 10/09/2022 15:16

Sport will be cancelled. A massive security operation is needed and lots of companies that provide football security are working the state funeral.

KimmySchmitt · 10/09/2022 15:16

@BestCatMumEver I doubt the NHS will treat it as a bank holiday (and I hope they don't). My health board are business as usual on Good Friday so I assume this will be similar. We might get a day back in our sheets in lieu. We almost didn't get the Jubilee so I don't expect we'll get this, maybe it's because I'm in Scotland but I just can't see the need. I don't mean to be disrespectful and totally understand cancelled non-essential events, but life does go on

Yes I've read the articles about this, but that would mean funeral is a Sunday which most agree isn't likely, so you are just guessing like everyone else.

EssentialGarage · 10/09/2022 15:22

Kimmy I can't see how the NHS will have any other options, keeping essential services going now that the schools are shut will be enough of a challenge.

KimmySchmitt · 10/09/2022 15:31

@EssentialGarage I'm guessing you don't work for the NHS! I doubt they'll plan healthcare around someone's childcare plans. People would have to rely on their partner/grandparents/friends, request annual leave or swap shifts. Suppose we'll have to wait and see what they decide, it'll be a nightmare for some people either way

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 10/09/2022 15:32

Blackheath95 · 10/09/2022 13:36

For the county that gave the world “keep calm and carry on” there sure is a lot of people acting like The whole world is imploding for one day. Life is full of curveballs. Hospitals are still going to be hospitals, firefighters will still fight fires. Somethings will close for the day but you’ll just have to wait and see.

Caring about your wedding or your non-urgent medical appointment that you've been waiting months for is such pampered snowflake territory.

Yes I hope for the sake of supermarket staff that they are closed too. It’s only one day and people can stock up in advance

EssentialGarage · 10/09/2022 15:41

No Kimmy but it is the same for all businesses, plans are made for bank holidays, suddenly a fully booked working day becomes an expected day off for everyone that normally has BH off, people that beg borrow and juggle childcare have just over a week to find someone, and it affects everyone with school aged children.

Routine appointments/ops are not scheduled for BH normally.

I am flying out from Gatwick about midday…a much needed break ! Am worrying that flights might be cancelled due to staff shortage and have already paid for accommodation the other end ! Not a package so not sure how the insurance will work.
Am wondering if Monday is a problem for some reason so they still have not made a definite decision .
Shall just have to wait like everyone else for the announcement.

freezingmytoesoff · 10/09/2022 17:04

Confirmed by BBC for Monday 19th

My crystal ball on this niche subject isn't as good as it used to be but:

Airlines/airports try to run 24/7, including Bank Holidays, including Christmas..including days such as Princess Diana's funeral - I flew that day - , and H&M wedding....I flew that day.... so hopefully there will not be a staff shortage on the 19th so bad that flights are cancelled en-mass.

Whoever came up with the no fly zone rumour needs......well it's MN so can't say it....A complete no fly zone over the UK would knock out easy access to/from the eastern end of a lot of routes over the North Atlantic....cause lots of issues, both political and practical.....so what's known as high level airspace over the UK will stay open.

Low level my best guess, based on my experience over the years, is as I posted upthread:

There will no doubt be some short lived temporary closures of airspace at low altitude over parts of London and possibly Windsor...that might effect some traffic out of Heathrow for an hour or two but not shut the airport down.

No doubt many UK airports might halt ground operations for a few minutes at a critical time in the service as a mark of respect.

Other than that I'd expect it to mostly be "operations normal" but of course I could be completely wrong...
