Having a breakdown over oat milk. Please help!

I need some mass power here. Someone please help an autistic woman out here. This is a huge deal and having a significant impact on me right now - although I recognise it's trivial.

Aplro have changed the colour of their oat milk packaging from a cream/beige colour to blue. The milk is also whiter and now separates in.my coffee whereas it didn't before.

What oat milk do you use that doesn't separate in coffee? Alpro oat is the only one I've used for a long long time.

I feel foolish and embarrassed because I know it's trivial but this is so important to me.

I was going to say did you pick up the right one? There's "fresh" and then UHT. I am right on the UHT but don't like the fresh one, oddly. There's also the Oat Unsweetened (yes please) and the "normal" one (ugh). Very discombobulating with something so important as your start to the day isn't right!

HungryKoala · 09/09/2022 10:25

Aldi have two types, they taste the same and neither curdle in my morning coffee plus they're way cheaper than the branded versions and I can't taste the difference.

TheGander · 09/09/2022 10:34

After extensive research we use the fresh Califia Farms Barista blend, or Oatly ( full cream) . They have the best, smoothest texture and fuller taste.

BocaChica · 09/09/2022 10:47

The ones that curdle in coffee do so because of the way they are formulated.

Alpro, for instance, have ranges that they market as 'professional' and 'barista' that dont curdle in coffee.

Expect to pay more than for the basic Alpro product ( well golly gosh ! )

But that’s about you, not the OP!

If you read her posts, she's already said that she quite likes black coffee and is considering that as an option. Other people are recommending 'milks' they like. I - like some other posters - was recommending going without 'milk'. It is not 'about me' - I am recommending based on my own tastes and her expressed preferences, which is exactly what everyone else is doing.

youmakemesigh · 09/09/2022 10:59

My favourite coffee ever is from a chain of coffee houses which begins with P. Their oat latte is out of this world. I don't know what oat milk they use though as I couldn't get oat milk to froth or almond milk either.

SiobhanSharpe · 09/09/2022 11:04

Even as a non-autistic person I understand completely.

My breakfast Coffee has to be exactly right -- our own blend of beans, freshly ground, made in a cafetière, strong and with a splash of hot, full cream milk.
Otherwise the day just starts out wrong.

vitahelp · 09/09/2022 11:38

Many others have said it so I'm sure you get the idea, but Oatly Barista is the one. We tried every single plant based milk and this was the only one that worked in coffee.

Whoareyoumyfriend · 09/09/2022 11:39

@Sturmundcalm generally Caucasian people don't have issues with lactose. It's usually to protein. I was diagnosed with milk allergy as a child. I've tried the lacto free stuff before and always become unwell

Thank you all. You're all like a little army and have fixed my day.

From what everyone has said it sounds like dh ordered the incorrect milk in the food shop. I'm very relieved that my preferred milk still exists and also that I have a few other options to try.

I tried to talk to dh this morning about the issue and his words were something like "after the week we've had let's not have a drama about something as trivial as milk." 😂 sounds harsh but he does check in for the big issues, he ignores what he considers to be the smaller issues. I flit between thinking he's an arse and thinking he has a good strategy to not fuel the fire

NOTHING COMES BETWEEN ME AND MY FIRST CUPPA Brew

Haha sometimes he is. But aren't we all at times

What a ridiculously dramatic post…..Oatly Barista is great and will hopefully stop you from any future meltdowns 😂

Whoareyoumyfriend · 09/09/2022 12:42

@Andrutica I'm glad you have no idea what it's like to be ND. You have zero clue the impact it has had on me. I know it's pathetic and ridiculous. I've said I'm embarrassed. This is the reason why women with autism mask. How insensitive

youmakemesigh · 09/09/2022 12:49

It's possible that the OP hasn't kept the milk in the fridge which is why it's curdling? I don't know.

Yours is the ridiculous (and ignorant) post. Did you even read the OP?
You clearly have no idea about how being ND can affect people. My DD has ASD and OCD, and a scenario like OPs would be a problem to say the least.

OP, I'm glad you've managed to get it sorted! Brew

As a fully grown adult with kids, Job, house, husband....all the usual adult stuff. It's mortifying that something as simple as milk can wreck my day. Some things impact me more than others. It's times like this that asc is disabling. This thread has helped me get up and function today.

Yes some believe is a "fashion" to have a diagnosis. But truly and honestly, it's not fun to be autistic.

Genuine question as I’m fascinated

how do you cope being a parent? Is it more difficult do you think?

Whoareyoumyfriend · 09/09/2022 13:19

Honestly and truthfully? It's really very hard. I struggle with noise and unpredictability. However my eldest child is quite likely autistic and is volatile. When things are good, it's all good. But truthfully I feel sorry for my husband. He gets the worst of me. Mostly I suck up my issues and continue my day, but he receives my frustration about things like milk. I'm learning to find other outlets and ways of coping but life isn't easy. I have a very good group of friends around me - I choose carefully who I have in my life.

@Doingprettywellthanks that reply was for you 😊thanks for asking

I believe I'm a good parent. My husband and friends would agree. But it's definitely at the detriment to my mental health.

I was going to second @BarbaraofSeville’s suggestion of making your own oat milk, @Whoareyoumyfriend - but I see your problem has been resolved.

I am not autistic, but I can’t function without my morning coffee, and it has to be right so I can empathise with you.

Comeintomylife9 · 09/09/2022 14:02

Sainsburys own brand Oat milk is lovely in tea, you won't look back. It comes in white and green packaging/carton.

Dartmoorcheffy · 09/09/2022 14:08

I use Alpro My Cuppa. It tastes just like milk and is fantastic in tea or coffee as well as to drink on its own

@Andrutica Why on earth would you say that someone who has explained that she is autistic and is already embarrassed that this issue is bothering her? How horrible of you.
