Having a breakdown over oat milk. Please help!

I need some mass power here. Someone please help an autistic woman out here. This is a huge deal and having a significant impact on me right now - although I recognise it's trivial.

Aplro have changed the colour of their oat milk packaging from a cream/beige colour to blue. The milk is also whiter and now separates in.my coffee whereas it didn't before.

What oat milk do you use that doesn't separate in coffee? Alpro oat is the only one I've used for a long long time.

I feel foolish and embarrassed because I know it's trivial but this is so important to me.

OP! I went through this recently (Also autistic). The new blue ones aren't replacing the normal ones as far as I know. After being subbed the blue ones once, I've now been getting the usual ones from Morrisons and Asda with no issue at all x

Tdcp · 09/09/2022 09:31

"There’s a new milk from alpro called this is not milk and it’s amazing"

That's the horrible one she's talking about..

BloodAndFire · 09/09/2022 09:35

Agree you should just start drinking it black. I can't bear any kind of milk or 'milk' in coffee.

bloomflower · 09/09/2022 09:35

you don't need oatley barista, many of the fresh (non UHT) supermarket brand oatmilks work fine in coffee without splitting for half the price. e.g. morrisons, asda etc. Also the Lidl and Aldi own brand ones (UHT) are pretty good and don't split.

lilroo87 · 09/09/2022 09:36

Oatly barista is the only one we have. Definitely give the carton a good shake before use but it's lovely

inkworks273 · 09/09/2022 09:40

I think Aldi do a barista version.

But that’s about you, not the OP!

PestorPeston · 09/09/2022 09:41

Lidl have changed their packaging fairly recently

Oatly Barista is full of sugar and oil, that's why it tastes so nice.

I can't touch it, I'm diabetic and it spiked my blood sugars. Drank the bloody stuff for weeks before I realised.

I stick to Alpro Soya no added sugars. Doesn't split in tea or coffee.

I can't help with oat milk as I'm intolerant to oats so go with almond or rice milk but just wondered how you know it's the proteins you have an issue with? when I realised it was dairy that was causing me problems I tried lactose free cheese, etc but it didn't help so I just stopped doing dairy altogether but never bothered investigating what the actual issue was... 😳

just wondered cause I quite often have people say "just use lactase/lactose free" and I feel as though they are then looking for me to explain why that won't help!

Look into CMPA. (Cow milk protein allergy)

It normally resolves in childhood but not always and is caused by an allergy to A1 and A2 beta-casein in the milk. You could try A2 milk but there's no guarantee it'll work for you.

rebel-kitchen.com/products/rebel-kitchen-barista-mylk is the best non dairy milk I've tried.

AThousandStarlings · 09/09/2022 09:52

Another vote for oatly barista (but only that one, I don't like any of the others in that brand)

I’ve not tried anything anything which has even come close to dairy milk in tea. I’m perfectly happy with barista style oat milk in a a latte in terms of taste (though I do have concerns about the ultra-processed nature of it, and I wouldn’t eat any of the list of items Kindofcrunchy mentioned either). Even though a latte or flat is more milk heavy, the milk in tea is so much harder to replace. None of the plant milks I’ve tried (soy, oat, almond, rice, hemp, hazelnut) have made a drinkable cup of tea. I’d rather have black tea than tea with any of those milks. The only one I haven’t tried but am curious about is the Alpro Not Milk, so would be curious about opinions on that (and how well it copes with a steam wand).

@toastofthetown you need rebel-kitchen.com/products/rebel-kitchen-barista-mylk

I picked up a bottle from Holland and barret on a whim and it works brilliantly in coffee. Been specially designed for that iirc.

Lavenderflower · 09/09/2022 09:56

I only buy the organic oatly one.

bumblingbovine49 · 09/09/2022 09:56

I don't drink oat milk but my sister swears by oatly barista and says that other oat milks she has tried don't work as well in coffee

PixellatedPixie · 09/09/2022 10:08

Oatly Barista is my favourite too and most of my vegan friends swear by it. I hate it when companies change my favourite brands! 😤

fdgdfgdfgdfg · 09/09/2022 10:09

My DP goes for Koko coconut milk. She says it's the only thing that doesnt separate when making coffee. I know it's not oat but thought I'd suggest anyway

Exactly this! My brother has a diagnosed cow’s milk allergy and so can’t have lactose free as that just means the milk sugar (lactose) is removed not the allergy causing protein (lactase) - I think those are the names but I know that’s the science behind it.

Sorry lactase is the name of the enzyme that breaks down lactose - the milk proteins have other names but it’s the proteins that cause allergies while the sugar causes lactose intolerance.

greenacrylicpaint · 09/09/2022 10:14

we mainly use oatly organic. light beige packaging and doesn't separate in tea/coffee.
if we can't get that oatly barrista or non-organic are fine as well.
imo all need shaking/swirling before use.

I'm with you op I hate it when companies change good products. 'new improved recipe' makes me nervous.

FartSock5000 · 09/09/2022 10:14

@Whoareyoumyfriend I am neurotypical and I also find it really hard when the things I feel strongly attached to are changed. Packaging changes upset me also when I am used to something being a certain way, it makes me feel uncomfortable and a wee bit sad.

Your feelings are valid and you are not alone!

I hope you find a new oat milk that does the job. ☕

TheOceanClub · 09/09/2022 10:18

The best one hands down is Califia Farms oat milk.

HappydaysArehere · 09/09/2022 10:19

Alpro unsweetened long life soya milk doesn’t separate. Have had it for years. Also it doesn’t contain any oils. Has added vitamins and calcium.

ShahRukhKhan · 09/09/2022 10:20

100% recommend moma oat. It definitely doesnt separate and is the best I have tried (tried Oatly, Pure Oaty, Alpro etc). You can buy a pack of several cartons on amazon.

InsomniacVampire · 09/09/2022 10:21

Morrison's own brand seems to be doing fine in coffee for me.

shivermetimbers77 · 09/09/2022 10:22

I can only have Oatly Barista:
I have tried loads of others and they all taste horrible to me.. oatly barista is lovely.
