Having a breakdown over oat milk. Please help!

I need some mass power here. Someone please help an autistic woman out here. This is a huge deal and having a significant impact on me right now - although I recognise it's trivial.

Aplro have changed the colour of their oat milk packaging from a cream/beige colour to blue. The milk is also whiter and now separates in.my coffee whereas it didn't before.

What oat milk do you use that doesn't separate in coffee? Alpro oat is the only one I've used for a long long time.

I feel foolish and embarrassed because I know it's trivial but this is so important to me.

Ingredients aren't something I care about. I just need it right

Then how about using cow’s milk? If the ingredients don’t matter then that works very well in coffee.

Glitteratitar · 09/09/2022 08:52

Whilst on the subject of alternative to cows milk, has anyone else found there seems to be a shortage of Alpro soya? It is constantly sold out everywhere! It’s what I drink but I’ve now switched to Oatly which is lovely but feels quite unhealthy!

Rude Health Oat Milk (green carton)
Oatly Barista (grey)
Oatly Whole (dark blue)

Does anyone know which of these oat milks are gluten free?

@HumbleApe - Glebe Farm is the brand for you. We buy all of our gluten free products from them:

@BarbaraofSeville funnily enough, I find most plant-based milks work better with tea than coffee. Now, I avoid rice milk because it is quite thin and coconut milk because it is quite strong, but I've found pretty much every other milk works well with tea. I'd go soya or oat milk out of preference. As much as I love Oatly Barista in coffee, I'd probably get a bog standard one for tea. No plant milk seems to curdle when I put it in tea.

dizzyupthegirl86 · 09/09/2022 08:55

I’ve tried a few but always go back to oatly whole, the refrigerated one and not the long life. Currently using a back up barista one I found in the cupboard though. I didn’t like Alpro, minor figures, or M&s, Lidl or aldi. I think the asda own one is OK in a pinch. I used to like the innocent hazelnut milk but haven’t tried it since they changed it, and the oat milk version is awful. I’m going to try the califia one though, sometimes I can’t get the oatly whole one so would be good to have a backup!

the whole version doesn’t split in coffee or tea for me, but I heat the milk (I have a milk frother) so maybe that’s partly why?

Individewl · 09/09/2022 08:59

Oatley barista is good, a little too warm the milk in the microwave for a few seconds then mix with coffee until dissolved and slowly pour hot water in, I find it never splits this way even with the cheaper oat milks

This is a big deal OP. It's not even due to your autism. Imagine you sold it and all of a sudden it changed like that ?

Lougle · 09/09/2022 09:04

Is this the 'new' packaging? Alpro do a fresh (chilled) version and a long life version. You might have picked up the wrong one?

Fresh

Long life

I've just happened to lift it from Ocado because that was the first google output.

@HumbleApe are you coeliac? I wouldn't trust any of them if.you are.

Yes it's the shhhh it's not milk one. Relieved someone has said I can get the normal!

I need to start functioning. I'm still not dressed and my boy needs to be at school in 15 mins

I see now - you've just picked up the wrong one. Your normal one is on the shelf, not in the fridge.

CousinKrispy · 09/09/2022 09:06

To my surprise, despite years as a coffee wimp, I've recently started being able to drink it black. It might be worth giving it a go.

Good luck OP, hope you find the right substitute!

What do you mean?

Doingprettywellthanks · 09/09/2022 09:07

Has it been confirmed that the composition of the milk has actually changed or have you subconsciously assumed that different packaging means different taste?

toastofthetown · 09/09/2022 09:08

BarbaraofSeville · 09/09/2022 08:40

On a slightly related note, does anyone have any experience of plant milks in tea?

I'm not vegan, lactose intolerant or have any other reason to avoid cows milk apart from a general notion that I should use less dairy so it might make me feel less guilty about the amount of cheese I eat.

But I get the feeling that plant milk in tea will taste 'wrong' so have never tried.

I’ve not tried anything anything which has even come close to dairy milk in tea. I’m perfectly happy with barista style oat milk in a a latte in terms of taste (though I do have concerns about the ultra-processed nature of it, and I wouldn’t eat any of the list of items Kindofcrunchy mentioned either). Even though a latte or flat is more milk heavy, the milk in tea is so much harder to replace. None of the plant milks I’ve tried (soy, oat, almond, rice, hemp, hazelnut) have made a drinkable cup of tea. I’d rather have black tea than tea with any of those milks. The only one I haven’t tried but am curious about is the Alpro Not Milk, so would be curious about opinions on that (and how well it copes with a steam wand).

DollyPartonsBeard · 09/09/2022 09:10

I spotted Lidl own brand Barista yesterday and can confirm it's much nicer than their non-barista oat milk!

I find Aldi own oat milk the absolute best by a mile.

shimmeryseahorse · 09/09/2022 09:13

We’ve bought the blue alpro oat milk for a long time so it isn’t new. Occasionally if it’s out of stock we get a substitute one (barista style) which tastes different and which my DC doesn’t like. So it sounds like you might have bought a different version?

MissGrayling · 09/09/2022 09:17

Ostly barista won’t desperate in your coffee. It’s in the long life section.

TheWernethWife · 09/09/2022 09:20

We love Califia Oat Barista (blue box), fabulous on cereal.

SummerWinterSummerWinter · 09/09/2022 09:25

I use Aldi own brand oat milk and it doesn't separate in coffee - it's definitely my go-to.

JanuaryBug · 09/09/2022 09:26

I like the Aldi one. I hope you find one you like.

ChristmasSirens · 09/09/2022 09:26

@HumbleApe Glebe farm Pure oaty and Rude health are the only ones which are properly gluten free. Rude Health has to be the chilled one if you care about calcium/ enrichment

@Whoareyoumyfriend - totally get it. These are serious problems, lots of us get it! 😊

ChristmasSirens · 09/09/2022 09:27

@Whoareyoumyfriend I should say - another vote for oatly barista for coffee 😊

Perpop · 09/09/2022 09:29

There’s a new milk from alpro called this is not milk and it’s amazing!

TheClogLady · 09/09/2022 09:29

I buy this from our local (trendy) corner shop and it is SO GOOD:
