Having a breakdown over oat milk. Please help!

I need some mass power here. Someone please help an autistic woman out here. This is a huge deal and having a significant impact on me right now - although I recognise it's trivial.

Aplro have changed the colour of their oat milk packaging from a cream/beige colour to blue. The milk is also whiter and now separates in.my coffee whereas it didn't before.

What oat milk do you use that doesn't separate in coffee? Alpro oat is the only one I've used for a long long time.

I feel foolish and embarrassed because I know it's trivial but this is so important to me.

Surprised by the love for barista: it's great for frothing, but otherwise is soooo rich and fatty if you just pour it in or out it on your cereal 🤮

Basic oat milk from Asda, or Califa farms are what I like.

Whoareyoumyfriend · 09/09/2022 08:29

@HumbleApe are you coeliac? I wouldn't trust any of them if.you are.

Yes it's the shhhh it's not milk one. Relieved someone has said I can get the normal!

I need to start functioning. I'm still not dressed and my boy needs to be at school in 15 mins

oatly barista or Aldis own

youmakemesigh · 09/09/2022 08:35

On the Tesco website there are 8 different Alpro Oat milks. You've obviously bought a different one than your usual one but the usual one still exists.

www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/search?query=alpro%20oat

MrsMitford3 · 09/09/2022 08:36

DD does not like Oatley at all.

Try Califia Oat Barista blend.

BarbaraofSeville · 09/09/2022 08:37

Have you tried making your own? It's very easy apparently and works out far cheaper than the bought stuff. Then if it tastes right, you can just keep making it with no risk with the the recipe or packaging changing.

Google to see if there are any recipes that claim to be 'just like Alpro' and give it a go. It's only oats and water I think.

I use oatly barista. It's fine in coffee :)

Oatley Barista is great

Lalliella · 09/09/2022 08:39

Bless you OP, don’t feel foolish or embarrassed. I hate it when they change things too. And if my tea wasn’t the same I would not be happy. I know nothing about oat milk, Imjust wanted to empathise!

LammasEve · 09/09/2022 08:40

Oatly barista and Califia farm Barista are both excellent - even my non vegan other half prefers them to cow milk.

BarbaraofSeville · 09/09/2022 08:40

On a slightly related note, does anyone have any experience of plant milks in tea?

I'm not vegan, lactose intolerant or have any other reason to avoid cows milk apart from a general notion that I should use less dairy so it might make me feel less guilty about the amount of cheese I eat.

But I get the feeling that plant milk in tea will taste 'wrong' so have never tried.

DotDotaDash · 09/09/2022 08:41

Gosh this is totally the sort of thing that would derail my morning too. My coffee has to be just so or my day is tainted.

Yesterday was a new bag of coffee beans and the resulting drink was just not right. But it’s not just a drink as I did another one later and that was wrong because it was the wrong time of day :/

ilovesushi · 09/09/2022 08:42

We get one in a light brown packaging from waitrose and it is perfect in tea. I can't check the package as we've run out but will ask my DD who drinks it. I've had a glance on their website and it might be the organic Oatly one.

stilldumdedumming · 09/09/2022 08:43

Aldi own brand - they have two (one has additives and one has none) both work brilliantly in coffee.

I drink loads and I need it not to separate.

Oatly and Alpro are a con - I suspect their non barista versions separate to get you to buy the more expensive barista version.

My issue is with the proteins in milk rather than the lactose

I can't help with oat milk as I'm intolerant to oats so go with almond or rice milk but just wondered how you know it's the proteins you have an issue with? when I realised it was dairy that was causing me problems I tried lactose free cheese, etc but it didn't help so I just stopped doing dairy altogether but never bothered investigating what the actual issue was... 😳

just wondered cause I quite often have people say "just use lactase/lactose free" and I feel as though they are then looking for me to explain why that won't help!

Body · 09/09/2022 08:44

OP you say no milk is a possibility. I urge you to try it that way. (After years of drinking cappuccino, I now drink black!)

I did start out by adding some natural sweetener (overpriced health whatnot) since I thought I’d not like the taste, just black. Now I’ve dispensed with that. Great as it is! Would never go back to milk, or oat milk. Good luck!

stilldumdedumming · 09/09/2022 08:45

Coffee is a spiritual practice in my household! It has to be right for certain!

Doingprettywellthanks · 09/09/2022 08:45

Oatley

love it

misscockerspaniel · 09/09/2022 08:46

The one in the blue packaging is a new product, the other oat milks are still available - I buy the longlife, it is the same as the chilled but cheaper!

I can't use cows milk because I am intolerant to casein but I can eat hard goats cheese and goat yoghurt. If casein affects you too, but you miss yoghurt etc, the St Helens goat milk yoghurt and cheese are good.

How do you make your coffee? Which coffee?

I only drink tea. There have been a few that really didn't work - tried a mighty milk (i think) that was made from split peas and while it was ok generally it separated really badly and was almost grainy with tea.

i'm intolerant to oats and soya so have never tried those. i find rice milk works best in tea (I use the rude health one) but Blue Diamond almond milk is fine and most of the other almond milks have been ok.

Bubblebubblebah · 09/09/2022 08:47

It's not stupid or embarrassing.

You could ask in coffee shop where they use some which brand they use. There are some specifically for hot drinks

This is the best one by miles we love it

AvocadoParsnip · 09/09/2022 08:48

Waitrose or tesco own brand, in that order. Has the benefit of being cheaper too!

My husband buys his oat milk from Waitrose or M& S (own brands), it seems quite good when I make him a tea or coffee. It doesn't separate but you do need to give the carton a good shake which is probably the same with all oat milk brands

Google casein - it could be that.
