Queen Passing but Not feeling It – AIBU

Now don’t get me wrong, of course it’s a massive loss to the UK, commonwealth and to her family, I get that but for me personally I’m just not feeling it. I think I have so many matters of my own, work and family to deal with and worry about that I just can’t relate to it.

Only today three hours before the official announcement, all five main UK TV channels were nonstop talking about the queen and we have gone into what I can only describe as a “24hr Queenathon” where in respect, TV is in a loop just talking about the same thing over and over constant. We will have weeks of this now and a bank holiday so more business interruption at a horrendous economic time and I’m sick of it already.

It's not that I’m uncompassionate, I got very upset recently over some of the atrocities that children in Ukraine have faced from Russian aggression, they have something to really worry about at night, that really upset me but with the Queen passing I’m just not feeling it. I will celebrate the life of the Queen, she has been amazing, but I can’t relate to mourning over her, I just can’t.

My Sister-in-law today has been in tears over the Queens death, half of me feels like saying “just get a grip, you're lucky that’s all you need to cry about” of course I won't, will just nod and say it's very sad but I just think, yes Queens been incredible, let's celebrate her life but as for mourning, shouldn’t that be for direct family only? AIBU?

Finally, at 96 I feel she had a really long life, worked hard but the best of everything. Some good people just don’t get a fraction of that, maybe that’s also a factor for me. Anyone else feeling the same or am I being uncompassionate?

Somebody posted on fb that you life is never going to be the same again why not?

The lyrics to our national anthem will change the pictures on our stamps and money will change.

I heard the same soundbite a lot after 9/11. Things went back to normal then, too.

My mother phoned me in tears saying "it's such a shock." I gave her some words of comfort, but thought that it wasn't a shock that a 96 year old woman has died.

Perhaps she was using ‘shock’ in its sense of ‘impact’ rather than ‘surprise’.

the80sweregreat · 10/09/2022 08:19

I guess I was shocked. because only two days before she was working.
96 is a grand age

Susannah Reid has just described the Queen as 'entirely human'. Grin

But....but....the illumunati.....the lizard people....
I don't think Susannah knows.

Possibly, but I have heard her (and a woman on a news report) say that she thought the Queen was going to live forever.

I took my mother some flowers though yesterday, as while I'm not upset, I appreciate she is.

Yes, I find the idea that it's a huge change a bit weird. Our lives are always in a state of flux, and there's always a mix of old and new. We wouldn't be aware of the Queen's passing if we hadn't been told. Change to stamps etc won't happen for ages. It'll all be gradual, and we don't spend hours starting at stamps or bank notes anyway. For most of us, who don't live in a royal palace, there's no significant day-to-day dramatic change.

the80sweregreat · 10/09/2022 11:41

I feel a bit sad that a woman won't be in charge for decades now !

EndTheMonacyNow · 10/09/2022 13:02

They have a cricket match at the Oval and as Saturday has become fancy dress day the organisers have banned fancy dress today in respect of the Queens death. People turning up in fancy dress were not allowed to go into the ground.
I'm a bit cynical that they don't find selling alcohol and otherwise enjoying the game is not disrespectful but that little step further of wearing a silly costume is. Of course wearing fancy dress doesn't raise any money but selling alcohol etc does.

Novella4 · 10/09/2022 13:43

I dont know what their problem is with fancy dress - they are all in full fancy dress reading out the 'proclamation'...

WookieWoo · 10/09/2022 13:43

I feel exactly the same OP.

I am as sad about her death as I would be for any other person I do not personally know and love.

I'm avoiding TV and social media in general and will continue to do so.

Me too! I loved that we had a Queen, there's far too many men in power without another one to the list.

It’s crazy how every radio station is playing slow music. I hate being dictated to. Spotify for me.

I'm wondering whether the artists had recorded all the slow than slow versions and then hid them away for this occasion. I swear, I've never heard some of the versions I've heard over the last 48hrs before

This and also I'm uncomfortable that we will now be seeing women bowing/curtsying to a man 😬 in this day & age.

That's a good point. It was less offensive when done for an old woman.

Benjispruce4 · 10/09/2022 18:23

Please tell me the morose radio music will stop !!!!!!

I've been wondering this too!

Benjispruce4 · 10/09/2022 20:01

It’s so OTT and fake. Sure it’s a monsoon history and a period of adjustment but I don’t know why we can’t have normal tv and radio.

Benjispruce4 · 10/09/2022 20:01

Moment in history!

cakeorwine · 10/09/2022 20:19

Radio 4 finally had a programme on that was not about the Queen

I was flicking around the stations. A lot of instrumental music. Any programme where the Queen got mentioned got switched to a new one.

CheesyChipsOnWembleyWay · 10/09/2022 20:23

Absolute 90s has been quite good, in a "not heard that for a while" sense, still on the maudlin end of the 90s spectrum though.

Hardly in charge but at least we have a female pm albeit a Tory one!

Shaaameless · 10/09/2022 20:32

I’m more concerned about who’s taking over from Betty, & the cost of it all!

This is a reason in itself to abolish the monarchy.

My daughter (she's over 18) just said FFS Dad the BBC are not letting you download the latest episode of Ru Pauls Drag Race....

Well that's one positive i guess.... only joking....
