To be sad that Queen has died but can't wait for the sycophancy to be over

I am no royalist but like many in the same position I am truly moved by today's historical news

It is a "once in a lifetime" moment for many of us and I am going to admit that despite strong Republican views I surprised myself by being knocked sideways by news

Not that it wasn't expected and that the Queen hasn't had a good life but by the sheer magnitude of what is happening

However other threads seem to be dismissing the fact that we can feel both - sadness that an elderly individual who was "known" to all of us has died and an unwillingness to join in the "grief jamboree".

I feel like I did when Diana died - I am struggling to recognise the grief others are manifesting and the absolute deferential attitude present here

I feel like this will just build and build and we will be exhausted by end of it

You carry on commenting and I’ll carry on disagreeing with you. Seems fair.

You can continue to be as hypocritical as you want yes!

workiskillingme · 10/09/2022 21:15

Oh look someone else as thick as mince who can't spell for toffee starting a competitive grieving movement

Philip made some awful 'jokes' about women and people from other ethnicities. He must have been hard work.

He was a complete prick.

@CapMarvel 😂😂

Imagine being the longest serving monarch and everything you did being reduced to a meeting with a fictional character. People never grow up really, do they? They just want fairytale.

Maybe they just appreciate a touch of whimsy at a sad and difficult time.

Foldingchair · 10/09/2022 22:00

It's the 'sad and difficult time' in struggling with. She was 96.

My uncle died last year. He was 81. I was a bit sad because he was a lovely man (I knew him, so I knew this. I hadn't been fed a public image of him.) But ultimately.. he was 81. I was sad for my aunty and cousins.

I have lots of aunties and uncles over the expected life expectancy. It won't be particularly sad when they die because, well, people die when they're old.

What will actually change for the majority of us? I'm more scared about having liz Truss in charge, than having a new monarch. Which one will affect my day to day life more?

Yeah. Dull tho.

Blossomtoes · 10/09/2022 22:19

It’s got nothing to do with age. But you know that and that it’s in no way comparable to your uncle’s death. I’m terrified of the damage Truss is going to do to the country, it won’t be improved by having only the inexperienced guidance of a novice monarch.

workiskillingme · 10/09/2022 22:19

@Blossomtoes not sure if you noticed but there are many many threads raving about the queen and royal family on Mumsnet (or the daily Mail on Facebook) if peoples opinions on here are too upsetting for you?

In your own words I will continue to comment thanks.

I don't understand. Who is it a monarch guides? I thought the aim of them was to be impartial and without opinion, an amiable sort of blank canvas.

workiskillingme · 10/09/2022 22:27

But it's bit upsetting me like it seems to be you 🤷🏼‍♀️

workiskillingme · 10/09/2022 22:28

*not

workiskillingme · 10/09/2022 22:29

The queen offered zero guidance when it comes to politics. Literally no opinion at all

That’s not what her 15 prime ministers said. Obviously they don’t know what they’re talking about.

gnilliwdog · 10/09/2022 22:32

@Blossomtoes Really? She gave our PMs political advice? I didn't think that was allowed.

Blossomtoes · 10/09/2022 22:35

Why do you think she met with the PM every week? To play Scrabble? Presumably none of you have seen any of the interviews with her six living former PMs in the last few days?

workiskillingme · 10/09/2022 22:42

Yes I did

gnilliwdog · 10/09/2022 22:42

@Blossomtoes No, haven't been up to watching those. I don't think I believe what you are saying right now. I don't believe Bj and his government were acting on the queen's advice or enacting her chosen policies. Or Blair. Or any of them, actually.

I didn’t say her policies were enacted. Brown says in the quote in the screenshot that he talked through the details of the budget with the Queen. May said the meetings were a safe space to discuss her issues and problems. I said guidance, not advice, the two aren’t the same.

I am intrigued how people who have cancelled or chosen to opt out of work / sport / hobbies / events feel about some of today's events in relation to The Queen's death:

BBC described the atmosphere in crowds as "electric" and "celebratory".

Great excitement as crowds were met by Princes William and Harry.

Lots of happy faces and excited interviews about how wonderful King Charles is.

Three cheers being called for at various points of the official ceremonies including bearskin hats being enthusiastically removed as part of this.

Rousing triumphant music being played.

Flags being moved back to full height in to mark King Charles' proclamation.

I have no issue with this personally. I can see it is part of the process and I don't feel a need to make any changes to show respect.

However today's proceedings and the general mood and atmosphere seem very at odds with all the talk of respect and implication that things should be cancelled....

Hambledy · 10/09/2022 23:33

I guess we don't know. The not knowing is what makes it undemocratic. And not even cloak and dagger undemocratic. Those meetings were scheduled, happened in plain sight, and will continue to happen now with KC, friend of Savile and tampon fetishist (those last two bits, we do know).

workiskillingme · 10/09/2022 22:42

Yes I did

Think they left let out the part where she lobbied them to hide her wealth from the proles. Those weekly meetings were obviously pretty damn useful.
