To be sad that Queen has died but can't wait for the sycophancy to be over

I am no royalist but like many in the same position I am truly moved by today's historical news

It is a "once in a lifetime" moment for many of us and I am going to admit that despite strong Republican views I surprised myself by being knocked sideways by news

Not that it wasn't expected and that the Queen hasn't had a good life but by the sheer magnitude of what is happening

However other threads seem to be dismissing the fact that we can feel both - sadness that an elderly individual who was "known" to all of us has died and an unwillingness to join in the "grief jamboree".

I feel like I did when Diana died - I am struggling to recognise the grief others are manifesting and the absolute deferential attitude present here

I feel like this will just build and build and we will be exhausted by end of it

Apparently Morrisons have disabled the beeps on scanning items at checkouts to ‘show respect’. Cue numerous shoppers struggling with self checkout as a result because the sound is an important piece of system feedback for the user to know items have registered etc.

Madness.

LemoncHello7 · 10/09/2022 17:32

You’re joking!?? That’s the most OTT ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard. Competitive and performative grieving at its best

LemoncHello7 · 10/09/2022 17:32

That was in response to @LampLighter414

I must admit I'm actually quite enjoying that level of stupidity.

@LemoncHello7 this is from a Reddit thread I spotted earlier. Several comments on it corroborating. One claimed to be a staff member and said they are working shifts in near silence and tannoy is also not allowed to be used.

So let’s expect near silent grocery shopping at Morrisons for the remaining 8 days

Did they shout 'I'm Spartacus' before delivering their opinion?

That would have been funny!

YourLipsMyLipsApocalypse · 09/09/2022 16:15

To be fair I slagged the Queen and the entire RF off a lot while she was still alive.

Me too. I'm sure ain't stopping now Wink

gatehouseoffleet · 10/09/2022 18:02

I don't understand it, didn't understand it over Princess Diana, didn't understand it over Captain Tom and don't understand it now. To me it feels yuck and in my mind its disrespectful. But as I said at the start I'm neurodivergent, I know that the majority of people's brains don't work like mine. I just really hope it doesn't go on too long

Nowt to do with being neurodivergent - everything to do with having independence of thought.

Another example - the poppy dictatorship; I always buy a poppy but I don't care whether other people buy one, it's up to people what, if any, charities they support.

I do not like being told what to think and how to feel.

gatehouseoffleet · 10/09/2022 18:03

The Morrisons thing is ridiculous too.

turningpurpleygreen · 10/09/2022 19:20

@LemoncHello7

I know

Is Paddington the link to the afterlife?

LemoncHello7 · 10/09/2022 19:22

@turningpurpleygreen apparently he is. Who knew !?

turningpurpleygreen · 10/09/2022 19:23

She would have thought the poems
Were ghastly

Especially the one where Phil taps her
On the shoulder

turningpurpleygreen · 10/09/2022 19:26

@Hambledy

Bloody hell 🙈

Paddington has a phone? Maybe he needs google maps to escort her to heaven

I expect so, but I think she'd have appreciated the sentiment and she certainly wouldn't have been rude about it.

What gets me is the way people go on about how wonderful her marriage to Phillip was . He was a philanderer and in my view she was far more into him then the other way around

So what? She was happy. Come back and pick holes in other people’s marriages when you’ve been married for over 70 years.

Notanotherwindow · 10/09/2022 19:48

That poem is terrible English. 'I seen myself' No, love, you SAW yourself.

I'm sad she's gone though. She was a kind and hardworking woman and deserves a good send off.

Bretonbear · 10/09/2022 20:00

My local Morrisons had the book of condolences on a table right next to the food bank food trolley. Was actually lovely to see the Food Bank trolley over flowing. The book was barely touched.

workiskillingme · 10/09/2022 20:09

@Blossomtoes I know there were many times she wasn't. She spent a lot of their Union defending his behaviour .
And sorry you don't have to have been married any amount of years before you are 'allowed' to comment on anyone in the public eye

gnilliwdog · 10/09/2022 20:11

Philip made some awful 'jokes' about women and people from other ethnicities. He must have been hard work.

You know nothing. The only people who know about a marriage are the two people in it. Unless you’ve achieved a 70 year marriage you’re in no position to criticise people who have.

Mamamia7962 · 10/09/2022 20:18

Yourlipsmylips - It's nothing like fucking North Korea. Nobody is forcing you to mourn. I have been out shopping today, everyone was going about their business as normal. On the way back I drove past a park, loads of families out and about enjoying the sunshine.

Of course the TV stations are going to say "the nation mourns", it would just sound awkward if they didn't.

workiskillingme · 10/09/2022 20:18

Ha ha ha
Loads of people in long marriages are unhappy- the queen couldn't exactly just up and leave as the head of the CofE 🙄so I will continue to comment thanks

Blossomtoes · 10/09/2022 20:54

You carry on commenting and I’ll carry on disagreeing with you. Seems fair.

Hambledy · 10/09/2022 21:08
