How awful it must be for him to lose his mother and then immediately take on this role. He's had his whole life to prepare, but can a person ever really prepare for something like that?

Charles won't ever abdicate to William.

Bear in mind that one of the people who was incredibly bitter about the Edward VIII abdication was the Queen Mother - who Charles spent a LOT of time with.

Plus, William's children are still very young. They wouldn't want the extra time away from the children that being King and Queen would entail for William and Kate. The extra pressure it would put on George from a young age isn't something they'd want either.

So even if you ignore the fact he likely wants the role he's been waiting for all this time, there are other factors that would prevent him from opting for abdication imo.

The wording in passports and the likes will change to His Majesty.

They won't change post boxes though. They stay in place until they need replaced. The one round the corner from my house is a George VI post box and it's still in use.

All grandchildren under the reigning monarch are entitled to Prince and Princess titles, I wonder if Archie and Lillibet will be given those titles. Unless of course our new monarch changes the patent.

Does anyone else want to add ‘spaniel’ when they hear King Charles? 😬

Yup, it's so annoying, I've taken it one step further with cavalier King Charles spaniel, it's floating around my head.

He might have been inclined to, had the Mother, not made a public issue of it, in front of millions.

They already are - it happened the moment the Queen died. They don't have to be given them, it's automatic.

Same with William and Harry becoming HRH The Prince William/Henry.

It would be a large statement for Charles to retrospectively remove the titles so I don't see it. Will be unlikely that they use them in the US I'd have thought.

Also Charles can now create Prince Edward as Duke of Edinburgh if that's still in the plans as the moment Charles became King the title merged with the Crown.

People who are ‘stunned’ and ‘in shock’ - were you aware she was 96?! Also the comments about Charles’s deep grief over his 96 year old mother are ridiculous. She was ancient, people die, he knew it was coming, he’ll miss her sometimes. People on here are strange.

Well, my dm was 93 when she died , obviously it wasn’t a shock due to her age, but it was relatively sudden as she had been in fine form the day before - I mourned her deeply and indeed still do - just because a person reaches a great age it does not mean that their family will not be devastated . I certainly do more than casually think of her a couple of days and miss her ‘sometimes’

@oreobiscitz
We will be Carolinians.

Think of N & S Carolina in USA founded by King Charles 11 of England ....

pleasehelpwi3 · 08/09/2022 22:48

Didn't have to do anything to earn a life of luxury. Just like his mum and extended family. We fund them all.

Oh so Diana was a hurdle? No she was a lamb to the slaughter! Time for this farce to end now the dear queen has gone.

Yep, definitely

Will it not be Caroleans?

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 08/09/2022 19:19

Probably not.

Age is on his side, he’s more mature. His mum took on this role aged 24.

And I guess he always knew it was coming.

I like Charles. He cares about the environment, wrote cool stories and overcame a lot hurdles to finally be with the woman he loves.

He was ahead of his time by decades in his care for the environment, he was actually mocked at various stages.

Me three.

Without those titles in the US they are even more insignificant.

Fizbosshoes · 08/09/2022 22:54

haven't RTFT but feel sorry for all the Royals having to do their grieving in the glare of the media.
I heard on the radio that he was due to give a speech tomorrow " the most important speech he would give" according to the presenter. I cant imagine that. For most people giving a eulogy at their parents funeral maybe in front of a couple of hundred people is difficult. Taking on a role as King and having to give a speech 24 hours after losing your mother seems horrendous to me.
I know he'll have been briefed/advised/prepared for it but he won't be immune to grief.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 08/09/2022 22:56

I think he’ll make an excellent King.

I think people have to get over the whole affair thing. It was 30 years ago and Diana also shagged anything that moved including married men. I’m not buying that she was a sweet innocent woman in love - she grew up in aristocratic circles, she knew exactly what the deal was. And quite frankly she sounded unhinged and difficult. Charles gets a bad rap but honestly I feel bad for him, but I think he’s grown and learnt and I think he’ll do his mum proud.

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 08/09/2022 22:56

To be fair He has had over 70 years to get his head round the fact that he would lose his mum and gain a title on the same day.

Not being uncaring at all but just stating facts.

I don't think Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet have the right "ring" to it. They'd be best not using it just for that reason. 😳

Ooh yes, I'd forgotten that we'd be Carolinans !
That will fry some on here 😆

Anotherdopeytaxpayer · 08/09/2022 23:02

@LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet Diana didn't start seeing 'other' men until she realised that Charles was seeing Camilla again and didn't love her and the marriage couldn't be repaired.

And at least she had a job before she got married.
