Our new King, Charles

How awful it must be for him to lose his mother and then immediately take on this role. He's had his whole life to prepare, but can a person ever really prepare for something like that?

OP posts:

If he lives to the same age as his mother we will have 20 years of his reign. Plenty of time to adjust.

Riverlee · 08/09/2022 21:50

King Charles (weird saying that) is nearly 74 years old, so I think naturally William will be his right hand man and will have an enhanced role. Feasibly William could be king within ten years, so his apprenticeship will ramp up now.

He was in a miserable marriage, he made mistakes, so did Diana. It's very sad she didn't find happiness and true love, I believe she would have eventually. They are just people trying their best, like we all are.

I quite like him, he cares about the environment and seems like a good dad, fil & grandpa. How can you follow on from such a beloved monarch, nobody will live up to her.

I agree.

I met him at an event once and he was nice enough.

I also like how he is with his grandchildren. Louis obviously adores him and Charles seemed to enjoy bouncing him on his knee at the jubilee pageant. It seemed like seeing a glimpse of Charles the grandfather, a normal grandfather.

I think like all of us, he's matured, grown, changed. I don't think Charles today is the same Charles of ten years ago never mind 30/40 years ago.

He will be fine.

Does anyone else want to add ‘spaniel’ when they hear King Charles? 😬

birdling · 08/09/2022 22:03

Aquarius1234 · 08/09/2022 19:42

I think King Charles III will be awful. He can't even speak properly for a start.

That's a horrible comment.

KateofGhent · 08/09/2022 22:07

@Kellie45

your quote is from Psalm 130, I recognised it.

KimberleyClark · 08/09/2022 21:33

He has actually said he knows he will have to stop doing that now and obey constitutional constraints. Give him a chance.

He shouldn’t have done it even as Prince of Wales. He has never held down a job in his life, and is obscenely wealthy, but he’s meddled with other people’s livelihoods so that they lost jobs and incomes. Don’t you remember his awful bigoted statements about someone on his administrative staff who dared to ask about promotion? He referred to a black woman in his employment as one of “those people.” Despicable.

Yes.

NewBootsAndRanty · 08/09/2022 19:38

You'd hope so....

They’ve made the second and subsequent verses rhyme now. My stupid thought for the day.

(Right up there with ‘it’s been raining, now we can’t go out and water the beans 😆😳).

My DH.

LuftBalloons · 08/09/2022 22:12

I think they are mad to allow Charles to take this on. He has too many gaffes to his name which could see the popularity of the institution nosedive. William on the otherhand being very much in the mould of Diana, ie. considerate, shy, and very likeable, would see a much smoother transition and maintain the high levels of popularity for the role.

I agree. There was a great play about this at the Almeida in London a few years ago.

But Charles Windsor has been pretty clear about his assumption of his entitlement to reign. I don’t see such an arrogant man stepping aside for his son.

CousinGregg · 08/09/2022 19:21

Oh so Diana was a hurdle? No she was a lamb to the slaughter! Time for this farce to end now the dear queen has gone.

Absolutely. Not my king!

bolleauxnouveau · 08/09/2022 22:13

I will mourn the death of our queen but I think the reign of the monarchy should come to an end now.

Toomanybooks22 · 08/09/2022 22:13

@user1471505494 agreed about Boris's speech

LuftBalloons · 08/09/2022 22:14

His whole upbringing was toxic

um, and who was his mother?

runlittlemonster · 08/09/2022 22:14

Nonunsnonunsnone · 08/09/2022 19:33

Plus him and Diana spent about 4 days in each others private company prior to their engagement. They were strangers.

Is this meant to be a statement in his defence? He was 32, she was 19.

What do you mean by the word defence?

Is he on trial for something?

Will the national anthem lyrics change ?

No, it will still be God Save The Queen 😏

ThisIsNotThePostYourLookingFor · 08/09/2022 19:36

Im surprised at his age he hasn’t just passed it to William. He should be relaxing in his 70’s not taking up a massive role

Sod that. He's spent his entire life preparing to be King and you'd rather he didn't bother?!

Madness. It's his destiny. Great man. Had the pleasure of meeting him and I think he's going to be superb.

Topseyt123 · 08/09/2022 22:28

I do feel for him, and I wish him all the very best.

I think it must be awful to have to be in the public eye at such a time. For the rest of us when a family member dies we can grieve in relatively privacy. Not so for members of the Royal family.

Anotherdopeytaxpayer · 08/09/2022 22:30

Bizarre that our new monarch is married to a woman who's husband had an affair with his (Charles' ) sister. At least they managed to "keep it in the family" and no-one has lost their head over it.

ThomasinaGallico · 08/09/2022 22:31

It’s worth dusting off your history and looking at the very interesting parallels between this moment and 22 January 1901. That was the day Queen Victoria died. Like Queen Elizabeth II, her reign was a record breaker. She also reigned over an era of unprecedented technological and social change. Like Elizabeth, she was often embarrassed by the conduct of her close family. And when she died, most people had doubts about her successor. King Edward VII was a nightmare as Prince of Wales - constantly unfaithful, hooked on the high life, extravagant and pleasure-seeking (think a Victorian Boris), he made Charles look positively ascetic. But he turned out to be a reasonably popular King for his short reign.

I’m inclined to give King Charles III a chance. He’s had plenty of years to repent his sins after all.
