Our new King, Charles

How awful it must be for him to lose his mother and then immediately take on this role. He's had his whole life to prepare, but can a person ever really prepare for something like that?

I was surprised to read the statement on the royal family page and how blunt it was and already referring to him as king. Could it not just have been a dedication to her? I'm not interested in where Charles and camilla are sleeping tonight!

That's the tradition: "the queen is dead, God save the King"

StoneofDestiny · 08/09/2022 23:56

Charles' declared ambition was to be a Tampax inside Camilla! He gets to be King instead........

I think King Charles III will be awful. He can't even speak properly for a start.

How on earth does he not speak properly? His speech is very similar to the Queen's, albeit in a male intonation.

Hmm, how many of us have had similar, silly, private jokes with friends or lovers at some time in our lives?

I wonder about the relationship between William, Harry and Charles - as the succession changes etc. William is already listed as the Duke of Cornwall and Cambridge.

A colleague at worked wondered if the fact Harry travelled separately was part of the current tense situation. I think this is a private family moment but it must be so strange to be all together in such circumstances.

Were any other grandchildren there? Thinking about it, logically Harry had little or no more priority than, in particular, Princess Anne's children, as he's not directly in line to the throne.

StartupRepair · 09/09/2022 00:11

Woken up in Australia to this sad news. While I think we should become a republic, I am very sad for the loss of the Queen.
DH and I met Charles a few years ago and we were very favourably impressed, almost dazzled by him. He was utterly charming and really listened to us. He was also lovely with a very elderly woman who was in our group.

Harry is more important than his cousins though because he is the son of the now King.

He does have a different status in that he is the immediate family of the monarch, whereas I dont think the nephews and nieces of the monarch are 'immediate' family?

Oh so Diana was a hurdle? No she was a lamb to the slaughter! Time for this farce to end now the dear queen has gone.

A giant hurdle. But the cult of St Diana the Wronged never seems to end.

Harrys father has just become King, Princess Anne is still Princess Anne. Harry is the son of the monarch whereas the other grandchildren are no longer grandchildren of the monarch - apart from PW

Harry is more important, in royal terms, than Princess Anne's children.

His father is the King.

And he's actually more important today than he was yesterday in royal terms imo - currently if something befell Charles and William then Harry would be George's Regent. That is a step closer.

I’ve always taught how shit it must have been for the Queen at her coronation- very close to her father, him dying so young. Grieving and knowing that the huge crown being plonked on her head and the big job that came with it was entirely because of that loss.

I wouldnt want the job

And I was wondering earlier about how William feels, probably a bit depressed that it wont be long, 20 years max before he is then king.

Rodion · 09/09/2022 00:44

I think whatever his faults we can all agree what a good thing it is that Charles is the eldest and not Andrew.

Katypyee · 09/09/2022 00:55

Now would be a very good time to do away with the monarchy.

Plus him and Diana spent about 4 days in each others private company prior to their engagement. They were strangers.

  1. I've had longer holidays.
StellaGibson2022 · 09/09/2022 01:26

When Harry arrived at Balmoral this evening what would the protocol been? Asking to see the King or his father?

MrsAvocet · 09/09/2022 01:32

I don't envy him.
Whoever you are, the loss of a loved one is hard, even if they have had a long and happy life and a "good" death, as it sounds was the case here. I would not have liked to have had to mourn my parents in the public eye with the world's media scrutinising my every reaction. That must surely make a bad situation worse.
Nor would I like to be starting a new massively high profile job at an age beyond most people's retirement.
I've no strong feelings about most of the royals really and think Charles has probably been both wrong and wronged over the years. It's very easy for us to criticise but for all his wealth and privilege I wouldn't want to be in his shoes .

Will the national anthem lyrics change ?

No actually. Charles is going to transition and is set to make his new pronouns official in the coming days. To avoid even more upheaval.

fallfallfall · 09/09/2022 02:36

i'm pleased he stuck with the name charles, it seems less pompous and self promoting.
positive thoughts as he goes forward as king.

I think King Charles and Queen Camilla will do an excellent job.

Im surprised at his age he hasn’t just passed it to William. He should be relaxing in his 70’s not taking up a massive role

I don't think he'd wish that on Williams young family. His own childhood suffered because his mother became queen when he was so little.

Well said! Hopefully after a few weeks of performance grieving by the mainstream media we can finally start the slow process of abolishing this ridiculous system. The Queen did a good job all things considered but in C21 I refuse to be anyone's subject!

abdication is viewed as a terrible action. The monarchs aren’t chosen but inherit on death
