To ask why people vote Tory?

Tierne · 07/09/2022 14:25

It has to be said that life in the UK on low or middle income is much harder than it seemingly is in other western countries of similar wealth. I dont think the Tory party is making this country a nice place to live in at all. But they keep getting voted in.

So if you vote Tory:
Why do you vote for them?
Would you ever change your vote and for what reason?
Do you feel uncomfortable at how Tory policies batter the most vulnerable in our society? For example making it impossible for people to get on the housing ladder, high rents and low tenant protections, no energy bill caps, etc?

NB: I dont want this to turn into a Tory bashing thread. I'd just like to hear how Tory supporters feel about their party.

@FarFromHome2

Well, you’re clearly making stuff up as well, as I did not say all Oxford educated people are weird or whatever you’ve took from that? What the hell? I give up now trying to explain. I would say it’s quite clear what I mean and it’s being twisted. I’m talking generally.

Culldesack · 08/09/2022 21:56

TooBigForMyBoots · 08/09/2022 21:49

Have you missed the words used by Tory PM Johnson to describe black people, Muslims, women, homosexuals and others @FarFromHome2?

No good trying to score points on that one, when you ignore the Diane Abbott insults about non POC.

TooBigForMyBoots · 08/09/2022 22:00

FarFromHome2 · 08/09/2022 21:54

I saw what he used when mocking what he saw as the neo-colonial antics of New Labour, yes, and in his article laying out his belief that Muslim women should be free to wear the burqa without fear of abuse if they chose to do so.

I can’t say that that comes close to Bevin calling the Conservatives “lower than vermin” or Angela “left school with more babies than GCSEs” Rayner referring to them as “scum.”

And can you find anything coming from a cabinet member to match the racism of Dianne Abbott, or the antisemitism that the EHRC uncovered in Labour?

Can you imagine the uproar you lot would have caused had Johnson spoken out in support of an antisemitic mural like Corbyn did?

Ah right. So it's OK for PM Johnson to disparage Muslims, black people, homosexuals, women in general, intelligent women and single mothers (FFS, the irony😆 in that one) because of what @FarFromHome2?

You claimed that most of the cabinet were Eton-educated. They aren’t, you know that they aren’t, and calling you out on yet another lie is not twisting anything.

If you put as much effort into getting ahead in your own life as you do into inventing “facts” to explain why the Conservatives are keeping you down then you’d likely be doing well enough to decide that you want to vote for them too.

No, it’s not, but you know that that’s not what he did.

Let’s pick the article on the burqua. He said that he finds it to be a ridiculous piece of clothing, but that he stands squarely behind the right for Muslim women to wear it, if they choose.

How can you possibly twist that into a claim that he’s disparaging Muslim women?

TooBigForMyBoots · 08/09/2022 22:11

Yes he did @FarFromHome2. PM Johnson punched down repeatedly to further himself, using disgusting racist, homophobic and misogynist language as well as outright lies.

Scurryfunge12 · 08/09/2022 22:12

No, the bit you twisted was making out I was implying every Oxford educated person is weird, which is made up, and you’re a hypocrite then aren’t you because you lied just like me, eh? I did not say that.

I said in my earlier posts, some working class people do end up at Oxford, getting degrees and professional jobs, but it’s far, far less likely than someone with an already privileged background. That’s a fact.

You are much less likely to do well if you come from a disadvantaged background, and instead of making poor peoples chances of success better, the tories are trying to keep the poor poorer by taking away resources while they siphon money off to their donors who rake it in.

I didn’t claim that you did say that, so no, I didn’t lie.

Your lie about Eton, though, are you now going to claim that it was “pedantic” to call you out on it?

And don’t be daft, of course they aren’t trying to keep the poor poorer, their entire ethos is based around meritocracy. It’s the left who’ll insult and sneer at anyone who does well.

TooBigForMyBoots · 08/09/2022 22:25

It's the left who'll insult and sneer at anyone who does well.

So what was that sneery insult you made wrt Angela Rayner leaving school with more children than GCSEs @FarFromHome2?

That’s not sneering at her doing well, it’s sneering at her inability to keep her legs together when she was fifteen years-old and supposed to be studying for her exams.

Scurryfunge12 · 08/09/2022 22:33

@FarFromHome2

Keep telling yourself they aren’t making the poor poorer because it isn’t of any consequence to you, there is plenty of research that suggests otherwise, like how they are taking money out of poorer areas and putting it into more affluent areas, as Rishi Sunak freely admitted on live video, ooh look a billionaire!

It’s just you putting your fingers in your ears and ignoring it.

The downturn of the country is plain to see since they have been in office and you know what, I’m not even that bad off compared to some, I just don’t think it’s moral to do what they are doing and even if I became a multimillionaire tomorrow, I would not vote Tory while there is breath in my body.

Yes, you made out that I said Oxford educated people are weird and privileged.

Talking of private education, Ms Abbott bitched about them didn't she? What happened next @Scurryfunge12 ?. Just that you seem so bothered about 'posh' education.

Scurryfunge12 · 08/09/2022 22:42

@Culldesack if you’ve been following, for WHOLE thread I’ve said that privilege does not automatically make someone less compassionate, but it is more likely. Only I keep having to repeat it as you keep missing that little snippet of important information.

So Abbott and her privileged education, as well as her children's, can be included in your estimate then. Got it.

Oh right, it was you, an educated adult sneering at a teenage child from a poor background becoming pregnant.

So sneering insults are OK as long as you're a Tory/ Tory supporter and punching down?

Similar things, and worse, were said about Liz Truss, on here, so what's good for the goose. I know Labourites aren't used to receiving the insults, because you're usually too busy dishing them out. Therefore, I can see why you're outraged.

TooBigForMyBoots · 08/09/2022 23:02

I'm not a Labourite, whatever that is. I've never voted Labour in my life.

Scurryfunge12 · 08/09/2022 23:02

Liz truss is a turncoat who cares for nobody but herself and advancing her own career, she went from Lib Dem to Tory and staunch remainer to Brexiteer! How can anyone think she will be fit to run a bloody country is beyond me. She’s too fickle and doesn’t have any ideas of her own.

And yet you’ve still not apologised for your lies about bilkionaires, or about Eton. Have you thought of joining Labour? You seem bitter and dishonest enough to fit right in.

She’s from a wealthier background than me. It’s really not my fault that while I studied and tried my best she just fucked around and bunked off school.

If you want to hold that up as acceptable then that’s fine, but you’re damned right that I judge her for it.

FoundDoris · 08/09/2022 23:06

Kashmirsilver · 08/09/2022 21:16

Why oh why do people have wear the 'I'm struggling' badge with pride?
I wish people would research why food banks have grown in number too.

Poverty is profitable, just not those who are poor. Look who sits on board of these companies that do to research, PR material etc and see how much money government gives them.

Scurryfunge12 · 08/09/2022 23:11

@FarFromHome2 bitter and dishonest? That’s rich, the Tory party is full of liars who do nothing but blame the last government despite them not being in for the last 12 years, and the poor and the immigrants for all the countries problems to justify their own greed, only they do it intentionally instead. You should be used to lies.

Are you going to apologise for saying they aren’t trying to make the poor poorer? That’s a lie as well.

I'm not going to stop you from sneering at underprivileged kids @FarFromHome2. Sure it's the Tory way.😉😆 And demonstrates, if it were needed, that sneering insults go both ways.

Arkestra · 09/09/2022 00:50

@Scurryfunge12 just wanted to say I'm with you on your comments. I speak as someone who is in a solid position of relative wealth, security, etc. I think that people in this position (or are adjacent to it, which can make them super-weird about it) often end up telling themselves stories about how they deserve to be in this position, to make themselves feel less guilty about it, and are very resistant to people attempting to remove the spell.

Although I'm instinctively left-learning, I've got a lot of sympathy with many intellectual strands of Conservatism, and a lot of suspicion about many strands of left-wing thought.

What I don't have is any patience with whatsoever is people in positions of entrenched advantage who deny what's been going on over the last 12 years. It doesn't even make sense from a market-oriented perspective - we have so much intellectual capital that is unrealised because we lack state support for parents and state schools.
