To ask why people vote Tory?

Tierne · 07/09/2022 14:25

It has to be said that life in the UK on low or middle income is much harder than it seemingly is in other western countries of similar wealth. I dont think the Tory party is making this country a nice place to live in at all. But they keep getting voted in.

So if you vote Tory:
Why do you vote for them?
Would you ever change your vote and for what reason?
Do you feel uncomfortable at how Tory policies batter the most vulnerable in our society? For example making it impossible for people to get on the housing ladder, high rents and low tenant protections, no energy bill caps, etc?

NB: I dont want this to turn into a Tory bashing thread. I'd just like to hear how Tory supporters feel about their party.

No, you missed the point. I’m not saying that at all, the point being that most of the tories haven’t got a clue what it’s like to struggle and neither do they care, because they’ve never lived through it and it doesn’t effect them. They are mostly billionaires who grew up with silver spoons in their mouths.

It’s got nothing to do with other parties or other MP’s

Gahhhhhh!! Why do you need to lie and exaggerate? It's so annoying!

For the record, here is a list of UK Billionaires:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_British_billionaires_by_net_worth

And fwiw I agree, we need more middle/lower class people in parliament, but there's really no need for the hyperbole!!

The law remains when the government changes. This UK government is moving further to the right. Your children do not have to commit terrorism for this law to be used against them.

But I get the reasons why you need to believe it won't ever apply to your DC.

Well that’s all bollocks though, isn’t it. You are peddling conspiracy theories, and I don’t “need” to believe anything, especially not the clearly very silly unevidenced claims of someone who hates the government and who wants to assume the worst of them.

Scurryfunge12 · 08/09/2022 19:45

@FarFromHome2 but my point is that while being rich does not mean that somebody can’t understand, being rich makes you less likely to be able to relate to anybody who is disadvantaged, or ordinary working class people who might struggle, as I’ve explained a couple of times already.

Also, most of the country don’t vote Tory despite their success over the last 100 years, and most people do struggle to some degree. I don’t think your assertion that ‘most’ don’t struggle in some capacity is correct.

I can’t understand why people are happy for things to continue how they are in this country, whatever your political leanings the downturn should be plain to see, but yes maybe you’re right, maybe I’m insular, just like you, if you think that most people can afford nice cars and nice lives.

Why does being rich make you less able to relate to people who aren’t? You seem to just be making another unevidenced claim and stating it as fact since you were called out on the last one.

Do you even have any data on the wealth of the various parties’ MPs?

Did you raise a similar objection about Corbyn? If not, then can’t you understand that your complaint seems not to be based on any actual belief about the effects of wealth, but rather that you are just basing this on your own prejudice?

TooBigForMyBoots · 08/09/2022 19:52

It's not Conspiracy theory. It's now British law that your husband and children can be stripped of their British citizenship in a way that other UK citizens cannot.

Do you think that 2 Tier citizenship is a good thing for a country @FarFromHome2?

Yes, didn't buy this not intending to be a Tory bashing thread 😅

hop321 · 08/09/2022 19:55

Why do you vote for them?** They're the closest party to my political views.
Would you ever change your vote and for what reason? Not to any of the current parties. Yes to a new party if I liked their policies. I'd particularly like to see a reform of the NHS to a continental European model.
Do you feel uncomfortable at how Tory policies batter the most vulnerable in our society? I understand that it's a struggle on low incomes, I wouldn't use the words you've used though.

HappyPeach · 08/09/2022 19:56

What other option is there? Look at the state of Labour.

It’s your conspiracy theory that it’s going to happen to normal people and it’s very conspiracist mentality to imply that anyone who disagrees with you is using motivated reasoning.

It’s very much your conspiracy theory that families like mine are going to find any government hauling us out of our investment banking jobs in London and stripping us of our citizenship.

Come on, you have absolutely no evidence that this is being planned, or may happen. You are asserting it because you dislike the government, despite the fact that there is nothing to suggest your ideas are likely.

Scurryfunge12 · 08/09/2022 20:03

@FarFromHome2 because it’s an innate human trait in general to worry less about things that do not effect them directly, and like I said if they had any compassion then why do they keep blaming the less fortunate - ‘30p lee’ for example? Why do we have more food banks than we’ve ever had, proving that they are making things harder for people?

The right wing press telling people they can eat mouldy food rather than throw it away in the cost of living crisis, which is supposedly helpful, yes, but doesn’t really sit right with me.

Why is there people out there concluding that people ‘don’t work hard enough’ rather than actually seeing that it is impossible for people to all have high paying jobs, and working in a factory does not make you lazy or less deserving of enough money to manage on.

Why are they making it difficult for people to get decent jobs when they want to, when there used to be more support out there?

Why have a lot of surestart centres closed?

There’s loads of examples.

They are taking away resources from people while vilifying them.

I don’t agree that people who choose not to work should have a comfortable life, no, shock horror, people like that also annoy left wing tax payers as well, it’s just made out to be a much bigger problem than it is and everyone who struggles is blamed.

FoundDoris · 08/09/2022 20:23

I wouldn't hesitate to vote Tory if only other option was Labour. Labour don't know what woman is.

BuenoSucia · 08/09/2022 20:23

Fuck me. I’d like to see the British government palm me off on Israel - could see Mossad undertaking a covert mission back to the UK under the cover of darkness with a label stuck to my chest reading “return to sender”! 😂

I absolutely loathe the hatred towards the PoC within the conservative government and the vile slurs levied against them. It’s extremely patronising to deny their views and use those horrible or skits because they “vote wrong”. “Stay in your lane, don’t effect change”. “Take your handout and remember where to put your X”.

There was something similar in the US, wasn’t there, with some Democrat suggesting that if you voted Republican that you “weren’t really black.”

I’ll go and look it up, I’d hate to have mis-remembered or to have it the wrong way round.

MattDillonsEyebrows
But the thing about the left that annoys me the most, is the whinging, we have had the most diverse cabinets in history over the last few years, all Tory governments but it's still not enough. It like
"We need more people of colour"
"what?? Not Nadhim, he's a man!!"
"We need more women"
"eh? Not Therese! she's fat!"
"We need more women of colour"
"Duh! I wasn't talking about Kemi, I disagree
with her!"

All these nicely diverse people and yet -
shock and effing horror - their ideologies are
all wrong, you see.
So wrong, in fact, that they are not really Black
or Brown the way they are supposed to be.
The only way for them to be truly diverse is
the progressives' way.
The far-righteous way that is.
That's the only game in town now.
Otherwise, they are just as evil as any white supremacist or fascist.
Now they're in government they actively participate
in the structures & system of oppression.
Wicked, wicked diverse people.
Jesus...

Yet it is perfectly acceptable for Diane Abbot to send her son to private school and say Black mothers will go to the wall for their sons and yet it is not acceptable for the parents of those members of the Tory Cabinet to do the same.

FarFromHome2 · 08/09/2022 20:33

No, I didn’t mis-remember, it was Joe Biden, in 2020.

She also said that it was unacceptable that her constituents should be treated by “blonde, blue- eyed nurses.”

And, having written that, I’d better do my due-diligence again in case I am getting this one wrong.

It's not my conspiracy theory. I'm an NI Catholic. My family was/is very normal. Didn't stop us from experiencing state harassment, false imprisonment, unwarranted raids and quite extreme violence.

Had this law been on the statute books, I have no doubt my parents would have found themselves stripped of their citizenship, jobs and home. Possibly with me and my siblings left in the UK without them.

I'm not saying you or anyone else will be hauled out of anywhere, they just don't need to let you back in the country if you go abroad on holiday. That's what this law means.

You spoke earlier about your fears of antisemitism with Corbyn. Thanks to this Tory law, any future government can use this law as they see fit.

FarFromHome2 · 08/09/2022 20:37

No, I was right again;

Ms Abbott reportedly said staff at her local east London hospital who were "blonde, blue-eyed Finnish girls" were not suitable to be nurses because they had "never met a black person before"

YANBU to ask!

IMO labour governments are crap at managing money. I love labour's ideas but question where the money to back their ideas is going to come from. The magic money tree? Higher taxes?

I also think the conservative government rewards hard working people.

Too many people took the piss with labour government and it allowed it. Sat at home on their arse taking handouts for no good reason.

I do not think the conservative government is perfect and more should be done to help those genuinely in need, that cannot work etc.

Well Liz Truss seems to have found the magic money forest to reward those hard working energy execs. Good for them.

She is not interested in equality. Bleating about inequality keeps her at the forefront. It's amazing how much this extremely racist and divisive woman has got away with. We know it's because she's Labour. I am not keen on David Lammy, for the same reason but even he knows when to zip it. Her comment about Sasha Johnson, being targeted by white people, was one of the most irresponsible things she has said, and that is saying something.
