Time for the Queen to abdicate?

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 06/09/2022 14:08

If the first day of our new 'Prime Minister' is spent having to do a 1,000 mile round trip to Balmoral and back, rather than sorting out immediate problems, then is it time for the Queen to abdicate and let Charles take over?

I'm not a fan of the Royals, but it would be better if Charles stood aside for William, rather than a succession of OAPs as King.

ZenNudist · 06/09/2022 17:56

She's the queen. She does not make a special trip back to London for the likes of liz truss. Who won't even be PM very long. The Queen in case you missed it is the more important person.

FFS I'm not even a monarchist and I think this is thick.

Haven't you seen the crown? Government ministers popping up to see queenie at Balmoral.

strugglingmum82 · 06/09/2022 17:57

Abolish the monarchy

She would have done up to a few years ago, but her health isn't up to a lot of travel now.

London to Balmoral is 516 miles.

So it's actually 1,032 miles.

Have you heard of Googlemaps?

Oh dear, how embarrassing for you op. The point the poster was making is that a "round trip" refers to going there AND back. So you can't do a "round trip and back"

😂

You said it for me.

LampLighter414 · 06/09/2022 18:07

Time for the monarchy to end once Queenie dies me thinks

NancyDrooo · 06/09/2022 18:09

I’d rather have the Windsors as our nation’s most famous family, than President Johnson or Truss or, god help us, the equivalent of the Trumps or Kardashians or something.

Kate & William will turn it round a bit, they’ll end up more like the Scandinavian monarchies.

InChocolateWeTrust · 06/09/2022 18:10

It is sad to say it but the reality is she is in her late nineties. She is no longer fit to fulfill even a minor ceremonial role.

She really ought to abdicate. But even Charles is really getting too old to have a really meaningful role. We could do with someone younger and more modern, not another ageing pensioner.

Badger1970 · 06/09/2022 18:12

She's incredible for 96. And will die on the Throne.

However I do think the time has more than come for Charles to be made Prince Regent. She should be able to enjoy a retirement of sorts, and it would ease the changeover when Charles does become King.

He was known as The King so I suppose it’s apt.

Is there are a reason why it can’t be done on Zoom? All those miles plus time wasted.

And why did her and Boris Johnson go on separate planes? Don't know how they came back.

To be fair all of us would be 'incredible' had we basically spent our lives not even having to open a door and make tea for ourselves. I think we'd all live to over 100 quite easily if your biggest stressors in life involved whether to wear the square diamond or the oval diamond.

I think forcing these politicians to Balmoral is a useful reminder that the UK is not just England

That is a good point, she isn't just Queen of England and Truss isn't just PM of England.

@ellyoctober

What's a "1000 mile round trip and back"?

London to Balmoral is 516 miles.

So it's actually 1,032 miles.

Have you heard of Googlemaps?

That’s by road.

they flew there.

London to Balmoral is 404 miles.

Jjones8 · 06/09/2022 18:23

No.
One 1000 mile round trip on a private plane for a one off occasion is nothing.

Cosycover · 06/09/2022 18:24

mamabear715 · 06/09/2022 14:19

What? NO! I love our Queen!

Why?

vera99 · 06/09/2022 18:25

But the crown came in on a cushion to the state opening of Parliament. That was the moment it all felt faintly ridiculous.

You can't land a jet at Balmoral. They landed at Dyce. I'd guess they took off from Northolt. Once you factor in the driving at either end, it's going to be about 1k miles for the round trip.

But really, the Queen's actual presence is purely symbolic - she doesn't write her own speech - so having the crown on its own is no more ridiculous than the ceremony in its usual form.

FlorettaB · 06/09/2022 18:31

The Conservatives chose to spend weeks squabbling among themselves, leaving no one in charge, rather than appointing an interim leader. I don’t think another day makes much difference.

As I keep wearily pointing out on here, there's no such title as Queen of England.
Sigh

Ryder68 · 06/09/2022 18:34

But the crown is the symbol isn't it. No matter who is King or Queen. It's all about the crown.
