Time for the Queen to abdicate?

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 06/09/2022 14:08

If the first day of our new 'Prime Minister' is spent having to do a 1,000 mile round trip to Balmoral and back, rather than sorting out immediate problems, then is it time for the Queen to abdicate and let Charles take over?

As I keep wearily pointing out on here, there's no such title as Queen of England.
Sigh

Isn't that the point ancientgran was making?

@sparepantsandtoothbrush

I actually said

a 1,000 mile round trip to Balmoral and back

Forgive me for not including the extra 32 miles.

Pedantic, much?

You have completely missed the point. 😂😂

@Anothernamechangeplease

Let's scrap the monarchy altogether when the Queen dies.

Not gonna happen. (No matter how much you and some others loathe them.)

Abolish the monarchy

Not gonna happen.

Exactly, no reason why she has to be in London or even England. We are the UK and Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland would be perfectly suitable places for the Queen to ask the appropriate person to form a UK government.

I don't actually loathe them as individuals (well, not most of them, anyway). I am actually quite fond of the Queen and I respect the way that she has carried out what she perceives to be her duty, well into her old age.

I just think it's an anachronistic system that has had its day. The many scandals relating to the monarchy in recent years have merely underlined this... they are clearly no more deserving of their special hereditary status than any other family.

Whether or not it's going to happen is a different question, but personally, I think it should.

HelpMeGetThrough · 06/09/2022 18:46

She's incredible for 96. And will die on the Throne.

Hopefully with dignity, having pulled the flush first.

The flight to Aberdeen is an hour and a half from London. Liz and Boris could be there and back in half a day.

indeed I think they were, as it's been planned for a while thatb they would go to the Queen and then get back to business this afternoon.

it would have been the same trip in reverse for the Queen who is always a at Balmoral at this time of year.

why does it matter which way round it is?

Because then you wouldn’t have the prime minister of Englandshire going off to foreign parts where dragons be north of Watford. Thats what the OP objects to.

If you knew anything about the circumstances in which the Queen came to be where she is, you would know that abdication is out of the question.

But then you’ve offered zip to the thread.

But the woman has a degree in PPE from Oxford. So why paint her as having the literacy skills of a 4 year old?

it's a pity she can't apparently remember the basics of economics then. I have a PPE degree to and i know that you can't kickstart the economy by giving to the rich and not to the poor.

NancyDrooo · 06/09/2022 18:52

Would people really rather we become a republic and have a president as our main man/woman? No thanks.

Brefugee · 06/09/2022 18:54

Yes i would. But as i have repeatedly pointed out, most people only think USA in terms of president which wouldn't apply in the UK.
Have some imagination, folks.

CheshireCat1 · 06/09/2022 18:54

The Queen shouldn’t abdicate and they’ve been aware of the immediate issues for months and yet spent the last few weeks arguing the toss and slagging each other off.

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 06/09/2022 18:56

Scrap the royalty. Most expensive council tenants

Nah, I quite like the fact there is a higher power than our politicians. Keeps them in their place a bit 😁

Yes but it was point about how often people say 'the future King of England' on here

I never mentioned the future king of anywhere.

Brefugee · 06/09/2022 19:03

Nah, I quite like the fact there is a higher power than our politicians. Keeps them in their place a bit

and the president as head of state would still be exerting her superior power.

DillDanding · 06/09/2022 19:03

Absolutely. I’d rather become a republic and have an elected president. Elected by the people, and not parliament. Like the Irish system.

It is ludicrous that we have a non-elected head of state.

derxa · 06/09/2022 19:06

ancientgran · 06/09/2022 19:02

Sorry ancientgran I didn't mean to offend you Sad

Plantstrees · 06/09/2022 19:14

@DillDanding Given the general public's voting record I personally think that would be disasterous. Also, the only people that would want to stand for such a position would be politicians (if there was actual power involved) or celebrities (for a purely ceremonial role) - why else would you?

A scaled-down monarchy is the way forward but I think the Queen will leave her hand-over to Charles as long as possible. I personally think Charles will make a good King.

Hobbycrapster · 06/09/2022 19:16

Agreed . In fact time to bin the lot of the parasitic chancers.

Topgub · 06/09/2022 19:17

Why is she amazing @CulturePigeon ?

What has she done for her 'subjects'

How has she improved any of their lives?
