Time for the Queen to abdicate?

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 06/09/2022 14:08

If the first day of our new 'Prime Minister' is spent having to do a 1,000 mile round trip to Balmoral and back, rather than sorting out immediate problems, then is it time for the Queen to abdicate and let Charles take over?

She won't abdicate. She's been scarred by the effect that her uncle's abdication had on her father's health so she'll remain monarch for the rest of her life out of a sense of duty.

If she does become incapable of reigning, then a regency may be in order, where her powers are formally delegated to the Prince of Wales.

Yes. Apparently, appointing a new PM is one of a handful of things the Queen can't delegate to the Counsellors of State:

www.royal.uk/counsellors-state

If she became totally incapacitated I think you're right that she'd opt for a Regency.

Somethingneedstochange · 06/09/2022 17:02

I don't think she will. I don't think she wants to hand over to Charles. She will stay on the throne until her dieing breath then want William to step in.

I'm not a monochist but the Royal family bring 19 billion to the economy a year. The golden jubilee came at just the right time after the pandemic and was just what buisnesses needed.

I'd be happy to abolish the monarchy, but your reason she should abdicate is pretty weird if it's just that she's in Balmoral and the politicians travelled to see her. That's a reason to stop the ludicrous charade of tradition, or for them to do it by zoom, or for them to use the same fucking plane or a train.

She can't get William to 'step in'. The present Monarch doesn't get to nominate the next one. The throne will pass to Charles unless there is an Act of Parliament to stop that (i.e. Charles decides to abdicate) or Charles predeceases her.

Fiwere25again · 06/09/2022 17:13

Because not having a monarch worked so well for Oliver Cromwell.

purfectpuss · 06/09/2022 17:17

I think Charles will be a good king- he cares about the country, the environment, heritage and has a good partner in Camilla to support him.

Tulipomania · 06/09/2022 17:18

Can't be arsed to read the whole thread. I assume many have already pointed out the tautology in the OP?

Not interested in the argument.

shazzybazzy34 · 06/09/2022 17:18

In fairness now she won't have very many years left.....

The Queen won't abdicate. Abdication is a complex process, requiring an Act of Parliament, and also makes a statement she would not want to make.

What she's doing is passing more and more of her duties to Charles and William - there is no reason why they couldn't take the entirety of the duties if needed, but presumably there are some critical ones, such as mandating the PM, that the Queen wants to hang onto as long as she can.

I agree with you. Abdicating a throne isn’t quite. The same as handing in your notice at work! The monarch makes these vows FOR LIFE

One of the other reasons the Queen won’t abdicate is that she apparently sees her uncle’s abdication as a factor in her father’s relatively young death.
If her uncle had stayed on the throne, she would have come to the throne anyway, as it was unlikely Edward VIII would have had children, but at a much greater age than 25.

OldFan · 06/09/2022 17:19

No point in abdicating, this isn't forever/long term.

Sharrowgirl · 06/09/2022 17:19

Abolishing the monarchy would surely cost an absolute fortune?

You’d have to disentangle it from public life - the justice system, the armed forces, parliament and government, charities, Royal Mail, currency….the list of things that have a royal fingerprint is long. Then there’s all the property - not just the castles and palaces but all the land that belongs to the crown - who will it go to? All the property - paintings, antiques, Crown Jewels….would it all be sold? And that’s before you start in the Commonwealth and the countries that have the Queen as head of state.

Not saying it can’t be done but it would be a huge undertaking. And, inevitably, expensive.

antelopevalley · 06/09/2022 17:20

Agree OP. A load of outdated nonsense.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 06/09/2022 17:23

When the queen abdicates/dies, that’s the time for the monarchy to end

Too late I'm afraid; it would take so much unpicking that we'll be stuck with Charles for now

However I'm hoping he'll hasten the day of its eventual end

@ellyoctober

What's a "1000 mile round trip and back"?

London to Balmoral is 516 miles.

So it's actually 1,032 miles.

Have you heard of Googlemaps?

I think the point your missing is that it’s either a 1000 Mike round trip or 500 there and back not the 1000 mile round trip and back you wrote.

pedantic maybe but using words accurately is also important.

But feel free to carry on shouting 😊

speakout · 06/09/2022 17:30

I think forcing these politicians to Balmoral is a useful reminder that the UK is not just England

balalake · 06/09/2022 17:33

If the Conservative Party and then the country had not chosen the misogynistic serial adulterer and industrial scale liar Boris Johnson to be Prime Minister, but someone vaguely capable and honest, then there would not have been a change of Prime Minister. If Mr Johnson had resigned the day he was given a fixed penalty notice for breaking Covid rules, it would only have been a short trip to Windsor for his successor.

The Queen should not be blamed even 1% for what has been required.

Ah that old chestnut. I recommend reading And What Do You Do by Norman Baker for a better understanding of what they "contribute" to the economy. It's an eye opener!

Fleur405 · 06/09/2022 17:34

Pretty sure Charles is also at Balmoral as he opened the Highland Games at the weekend. So what difference would if make??

As if Liz Truss was going to solve any problems today… or ever! 🤣

ThisIsNotThePostYourLookingFor · 06/09/2022 17:40

I would scrap the whole royal family but yes she should have abdicated a fair few years ago. At her age she should be resting and doing what she loves instead of public engagements

Blossomtoes · 06/09/2022 17:40

It’s indisputable that the jubilee was a boost to the economy @SmallSoupcon. Hospitality did spectacularly well over the long bank holiday weekend.

Take a break may be a bit high brow for her. Think she's more of a Biff, Chip and Kipper lass

Why do people type this sort of nonsense? Now you might not agree with her politics, and I don't really either. But the woman has a degree in PPE from Oxford. So why paint her as having the literacy skills of a 4 year old?

Mulhollandmagoo · 06/09/2022 17:47

I'm a little more agitated that as head of state she hasn't stepped in whilst all of this chaos has been going on, from Brexit to covid to cost of living crisis - she is effectively the PMs boss is she not? The only person that can force the government's hand? And they've been allowed to get away with everything they have done!

Also a bit annoying that two private flights took tow different people to the same place and back again in one day when we are all being told to be more mindful of our carbon footprint.
