Time for the Queen to abdicate?

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 06/09/2022 14:08

If the first day of our new 'Prime Minister' is spent having to do a 1,000 mile round trip to Balmoral and back, rather than sorting out immediate problems, then is it time for the Queen to abdicate and let Charles take over?

The flight to Aberdeen is an hour and a half from London. Liz and Boris could be there and back in half a day.

indeed I think they were, as it's been planned for a while thatb they would go to the Queen and then get back to business this afternoon.

it would have been the same trip in reverse for the Queen who is always a at Balmoral at this time of year.

why does it matter which way round it is?

@ellyoctober

What's a "1000 mile round trip and back"?

London to Balmoral is 516 miles.

So it's actually 1,032 miles.

Have you heard of Googlemaps?

A 1000 mile round trip is 1000 miles OP. That isn't what you said though!

Do you not think Truss is working while travelling? I don't imagine she's sat in the back of the car reading the latest copy of Take a Break

Take a break may be a bit high brow for her. Think she's more of a Biff, Chip and Kipper lass

FriendOfDorothyGale · 06/09/2022 14:24

What's the point in her abdicating? She'll be popping her clogs soon. Might as well get herself in the Guinness Book of Records.

Doubt anyone else will beat her reign.

I also agree the monarchy should be scrapped. Absolute joke.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 06/09/2022 14:25

@sparepantsandtoothbrush

I actually said

a 1,000 mile round trip to Balmoral and back

Forgive me for not including the extra 32 miles.

Pedantic, much?

I think they were making a point that ‘round trip’ already means there and back, so there was no need to type “and back” after 1000 mile round trip.

chipsandpeas · 06/09/2022 14:26

oh boo fucking hoo making liz and boris come to scotland, i mean they forget we exist at times but want to keep up as it suits them
im far from being a monarchist but i think the queens played a blinder here, its no secret how much she likes being at balmoral so making them come up here makes me smile a bit

Oh dear, how embarrassing for you op. The point the poster was making is that a "round trip" refers to going there AND back. So you can't do a "round trip and back"

wordler · 06/09/2022 14:28

Imagine starting with Winston Churchill and ending with Liz Truss - although the way the Tories are going Her Maj might to squeeze another one in yet.

Topgub · 06/09/2022 14:30

Well,I would walk 500 miles...

Actually I wouldnt

Scrap the lot of them.

DeadDonkey · 06/09/2022 14:38

Surely if you do a thousand mile round trip and back, it means you do it twice - now that would be a waste of time.

Topseyt123 · 06/09/2022 14:38

She won't abdicate.

However, I really don't see why abdication should be such a terrible problem if she is now too frail with her mobility (and possibly other issues at the age of 96) to be able to do the job fully. I think this does increasingly seem to be the case.

I think we are very possibly either virtually in a regency situation now, or something very close to it. And Charles himself, whilst still healthy as far as we know, is himself in his seventies.

I don't particularly want to abolish the monarchy, though I no longer hold to that as a strong opinion the way I used to.

500 miles and 500 more. To Scotland. 🎶

I'm so mad. You beat me to it.

A little clearer for those in the back.

What's a "round trip and back"?

Confused

CapMarvel · 06/09/2022 14:41

I do think there needs to come a point where, for her own health if nothing else, she passes the whole thing down to Charles.

I mean, she's pushing 100. It doesn't do her any good to continue to do queen duties - she's had a lifetime to serve, now she gets to properly put her feet up and watch Brookside in peace.

I don't think she needs to abdicate. They could have just done it via Zoom/Teams.

As for Charles taking over, no thank you. Let's scrap the monarchy altogether when the Queen dies.

Yeah this. Get rid of the whole lot of them. Pointless.

Watchthesunrise · 06/09/2022 14:22

Have some respect.

Behave yourself 🤣

Rosebel · 06/09/2022 14:46

The Queen always said she wouldn't abdicate although she probably didn't realise she'd live for so long.
She's clearly not been well for a while now and she certainly has handled most responsibilities on to Charles and William anyway. I still think she'll die on the throne though. It's what she believes in..

Brefugee · 06/09/2022 14:47

Oh and, if there were no monarc we would still be under the leadership of president Boris

such lazy thinking, really. there are PLENTY of other people who could be president. Tanni Grey Thompson. Floella Benamin. Gary Linekar. Betty Boothroyd. Phil Neville. Doreen Lawrence. (oh she's my new favourite).

Brefugee · 06/09/2022 14:48

I don't think she needs to abdicate. They could have just done it via Zoom/Teams.

also getting "this meeting could have been an email" vibe from this trip. In 2 planes.

Why did they have to go in 2 planes?

Such a waste of money.

HappyHamsters · 06/09/2022 14:52

Isnt a round trip and back 3 trips in total.

orbitalcrisis · 06/09/2022 14:52

Time for them all to go. How can we claim to be a democracy with these unelected leeches as head of state?
