Time for the Queen to abdicate?

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 06/09/2022 14:08

If the first day of our new 'Prime Minister' is spent having to do a 1,000 mile round trip to Balmoral and back, rather than sorting out immediate problems, then is it time for the Queen to abdicate and let Charles take over?

OP posts:
Fuzzy303 · 06/09/2022 15:24

yes, I think it's probably time for Charles to have a go, I also think he won't make a bad job of it

HappyHamsters · 06/09/2022 15:25

Will the weekly meetings still go ahead with Liz And Liz or will they be zoom calls now.

SueSaid · 06/09/2022 15:26

What an extraordinarily waste of money. 2 private jets for what when PC perfectly able and probably willing to stand in for her in London.

luckylavender · 06/09/2022 15:27

She will have worked on the trip. Truss that is

FlowersareEverything · 06/09/2022 15:28

I actually think the Queen has a wee bit of a happy glaikit look about her now. I’ve wondered if she might just live a quiet life in Balmoral now.

MaryLennoxsScowl · 06/09/2022 15:28

What’s unreasonable is suggesting we should move on to Charles instead of just abolishing this archaic and pointless tradition!

PeekAtYou · 06/09/2022 15:28

Truss (like Boris) probably wanted to get that photo with the Queen despite the fact that she believed in abolishing the monarchy back when she was a Lib Dem. I see no problem with them travelling to see HM.

Notanotherwindow · 06/09/2022 15:29

So you can't do a "round trip and back"

Well technically they could if they fancied staying in Scotland. 😂

CaveMum · 06/09/2022 15:29

For those asking why they had to take two planes instead of sharing - it's a security matter. You don't travel the Leader and their immediate deputy/successor together in case of a security threat.

herecomesthsun · 06/09/2022 15:30

If we can vote in Truss as PM, the mind boggles who we would end up with as President. And at least we can get shot of Truss in 2 years or less.

Tamworthian · 06/09/2022 15:31

CatherinedeBourgh · 06/09/2022 14:15

Meh, at least if she's travelling Truss won't be fucking up the country just yet...

I have no time for monarchies in general but am fairly fond of old Liz. Once she's gone, it's all downhill from there...

Maybe that’s the queen’s plan, keep
her busy travelling 🤣

Let's not.

Oh, yes let’s 👏🏼 👏🏼 👏🏼

WinnieTheW0rm · 06/09/2022 15:33

I can see the Queen retiring via a Regency, but not abdicating.

I think she will die as HM Queen, not HRH Princess Elizabeth the (dowager) Duchess of Edinburgh

user1477391263 · 06/09/2022 15:34

If she continues to become more frail (likely!), a Regency may be declared at some point, which would achieve the same thing.

What do you mean?

vera99 · 06/09/2022 15:37

@CaveMum William regularly does it with George though in helicopters he flies himself.

KangFang · 06/09/2022 15:38

She won't though.
And she still has to beat Louis XIV's record as longest serving monarch of all time.

Quveas · 06/09/2022 15:39

Ignoring the royalty bit in which I have no interest, I totally see your point of view. After all, it is utterly impossible to do any work in cars, trains, planes or helicopters due to the lack of communications technology such as laptops, mobile phones, satellite phones, Teams, Zoom and whatever other technology / software that isn't available. That's why all government business grinds to a halt when the PM and ministers are on the road/ on their jollies/ doing important stuff in countries thousands of miles away.

I am pretty sure that a round trip to Scotland will not be the reason that the problems this country is facing don't get solved.

MelodyPondsMum · 06/09/2022 15:39

Definitely! We can't possibly expect the PM of the UK to spend any time at all in parts of the UK that aren't <checks notes> London or England. Hmm

Truss might not be bothered about Scotland and maintaining the Union but the Queen is. Apparently she wanted Edward and Sophie to move to Scotland in the hope of strengthening ties since the Conservatives are pushing support for Scottish independence through the roof.

I think more radical changes to the constitution are the last thing this country needs.

After COVID and Brexit, we desperately need a bit of stability (although a change of government would be pretty welcome).

Trump-style corruption is what I see when I consider the idea of a republic. I think Charles and William will be much more hands-on when it comes to the duties of managing parliament, and wouldn't just accept the same level of corruption. Plenty of reports suggest they'll manage things far more robustly - which given the shenanigans of Boris and his blatant lies in recent years is no bad thing.

I understand the objections to the monarchy but unless you're planning on wiping out all classes in society and opting for communism instead, it's not really an argument. There will always be varying levels of privilege and entitlement. Plenty of lords and ladies who inherited it all at birth, and they're not part of the royal establishment.

I don't see royals as better than us. I can't remember which royal was talking about it, but they said that they are "servants of the people" which is an interesting way to look at it.

If there was no monarchy, who would hold the government accountable? Another elected official? Because that's not turning out so well....

I think it's reasonable to give Charles and William a go at being more relevant and modern. Charles can read the room and has spoken regularly of "slimming down" the monarchy. If Charles and William don't make a meaningful contribution then it wouldn't be unreasonable to reconsider the constitution at that point. Elizabeth has been on the throne for so many years but I think fresh ideas and change is what our monarchy needs right now. Sorry Liz.

Anamechangeisasgoodasarest · 06/09/2022 15:42

Maybe OP is off checking how many unnecessary "and back" flights she has shelled out for in the past 😀

Cigarettesaftersex1 · 06/09/2022 15:44

satelliteheart · 06/09/2022 14:26

London to Balmoral is 516 miles.

So it's actually 1,032 miles.

Have you heard of Googlemaps?

Oh dear, how embarrassing for you op. The point the poster was making is that a "round trip" refers to going there AND back. So you can't do a "round trip and back"

Stop being so damn nasty, there's really no need

CaveMum · 06/09/2022 15:44

vera99 · 06/09/2022 15:37

@CaveMum William regularly does it with George though in helicopters he flies himself.

@vera99 I imagine that is because it is not the imminent line, if you see what I mean. Once Charles is King I imagine that will have to change, though to be honest I am not sure if it is a legal requirement for the Royals whereas my understanding is it is for the PM and "second in command".

MelodyPondsMum · 06/09/2022 15:44

I always thought we should abolish the monarchy but having seen who the people of this country (and the members of the Conservative party) elect then I'd rather gamble on keeping the RF tbh.
Can you imagine all the grubby, shady shenanigans that would go on to buy the position formerly known as Queen/King? Nope. Too much has already been sold off to the highest bidder. At least they can't buy Queenie.
