Time for the Queen to abdicate?

If the first day of our new 'Prime Minister' is spent having to do a 1,000 mile round trip to Balmoral and back, rather than sorting out immediate problems, then is it time for the Queen to abdicate and let Charles take over?

The Queen will never abdicate. It goes back to the last abdication and how her father got the role as King and the scandal the abdication created.

I doubt Charles will ever be King I think it will all pass to William

But that's illogical @Kennykenkencat !

It would take Charles to abdicate for William to be King ( or die, of course, which he will one day.)

There is no way Charles will 'pass it on' to William. It's not a game of Pass the Parcel.

I don't understand why you think one rule applies to HM and another to Charles?

Being blunt, the Queen may last till she is 100 (her mother made it a bit longer.)

By which time Charles would be 76/77. He could easily be King for 10 or 15 years if he lives to him 90s like his parents.

amylou8 · 06/09/2022 16:27

Why should she abdicate. She has given her entire adult life to this country, and has done an amazing job. If she wishes to die as Queen she's more than earned that right.

TartanGirl1 · 06/09/2022 16:27

I don't think we will need to worry about the Queen for much longer...

ffsnotagainandagain · 06/09/2022 16:29

A round trip ....and back. hahaha

JaneBrownings · 06/09/2022 16:29

I also think @Kennykenkencat that Charles will want to spare William the Crown so he can have as normal a family life as possible.

The Queen is relinquishing some of her duties as her health isn't good. If she has back problems, and maybe heart issues ( always got swollen ankles and unhealed ulcers on her shins) then travelling long distances and sitting for hours are going to be painful and detrimental to her health.

I’m surprised the royals haven’t figured out that Charles’ best chance of being accepted as king, is if his mum abdicates. There’s enough goodwill for the Queen to prevent an abolition of the monarchy during her lifetime, and if people get used to King Charlie there might be enough inertia to keep his head on his shoulders for another while.

Liz sticking it out doggedly to the end is the very worst thing she could do for the monarchy.

500 miles and 500 more. To Scotland. 🎶

Lol!
I expect she flew 😂

Oh you have inside info on her medical conditions, do you?

What an odd post.

She clearly has some medical issues, but she also has the best drs in the world caring for her.

I don't follow your logic at all.

The British people adore the queen, by and large.

She's earned respect (although I don't agree with the way she bailed out Andrew.)

'Keep his head on his shoulders'???

Are you suggesting he is sent to the Tower and beheaded?

whoamI00 · 06/09/2022 16:35

I don't think anything can be sorted out immediaty by saving time to travel 1000 miles. It can't be a reasonable reason to abdicate lol

daisychain01 · 06/09/2022 16:36

Look, she's not going to.

so stop asking.

Brefugee · 06/09/2022 16:38

no no no. If you have a monarchy, you have to have the knobs too. So you have to have Charles. A Dutch style monarchy would be great. Slimmed down and the monarch retires at 65. Excellent.

Mayorquimby2 · 06/09/2022 16:41

@mnhq deleting my post for calling the queen a twat 😂😂😂 peak bootlicking

Don't go in any of the threads about corbyn/starmer/Boris/Patel/love island or you might faint at the language in them.

CaveMum · 06/09/2022 16:20

@neilyoungismyhero its a security issue, nothing to do with any I’ll feeling. It’s the same reason why pilots on a plane always eat different meals - if something happens to one you’ve at least got the other.

exactly have you see Airplane!

i like the queen yes shes frail but shes 96 shes worked a long long time-and the tories have had more leaders than ive had dinners-why shouldnt gthey go to her

Hmmmwhatnametochoose · 06/09/2022 16:48

I'm sure Her Maj is a Mumsnetter, has read this thread and has had an epiphany. Expect her abdication in the post ASAP.

Roselilly36 · 06/09/2022 16:49

The Queen will not abdicate, she pledged she would serve her whole life, and that is what she will do.

donquixotedelamancha · 06/09/2022 16:50

It would be better if the Tories didn't have to keep re-electing their leader every two minutes....

I think they figure that eventually they will pick a good one through random chance.

kimchifox · 06/09/2022 16:51

No. She will die as our Queen - if she becomes too unwell to carry out her duties apparently two counsellors of State will take them over Charles will step up but not become King until she's passed.

It's hardly the ends of the earth, unless you're a southerner inclined to regard Watford as dangerously far 'north'. Up and down in a couple of hours by jet, with time on the journey to do some work.

Asquith travelled to Biarritz for kissing hands with Edward VII. In 1908 when that would have been a multi-day journey rather than a couple of hours.

donquixotedelamancha · 06/09/2022 16:53

Blossomtoes · 06/09/2022 16:21

It most certainly won’t bypass Charles. He’s been waiting to be monarch his entire life, that crown will have to be wrested from his cold dead hands.

Well, fingers crossed then.

Antarcticant · 06/09/2022 16:53

Truss had a private flight taking an hour and a half. Many senior people make much longer business journeys than that on a regular basis. I'm sure that won't be the longest journey Truss makes in the course of her new role.

And will people stop going on about the tautology in the OP. The point has been made - Pedants' Corner is thattaway if people want to analyse the mistake.

It doesn't matter how many times you poke your finger into a turd looking for the sweetcorn, whatever you get still comes out smelling of sh-t.

DdraigGoch · 06/09/2022 16:55

She won't abdicate. She's been scarred by the effect that her uncle's abdication had on her father's health so she'll remain monarch for the rest of her life out of a sense of duty.

If she does become incapable of reigning, then a regency may be in order, where her powers are formally delegated to the Prince of Wales.

2018SoFarSoGreat · 06/09/2022 16:59

I have to take issue with the whole premise here. Oh dear, poor Prime Minister having to travel so far to one of the countries she is meant to be PM OF??? Why is that a hard thing? Why is that even worthy of comment? It is Scotland, not Antarctica or West Samoa.

The queen is in her 'kingdom' (ridiculous term, I know) - not off somewhere else. She is not the property of London, much as that could be argued.

Anyway, back to the question at hand. No, I don't think abdication is the way to end her long reign. After she's gone though, abolish the lot.

romatheroamer · 06/09/2022 17:01

More respect for her than those two tossers she had to see...glad she didn't travel to meet them
