Time for the Queen to abdicate?

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 06/09/2022 14:08

If the first day of our new 'Prime Minister' is spent having to do a 1,000 mile round trip to Balmoral and back, rather than sorting out immediate problems, then is it time for the Queen to abdicate and let Charles take over?

OP posts:

What's the point in her abdicating? She'll be popping her clogs soon. Might as well get herself in the Guinness Book of Records.

Doubt anyone else will beat her reign.

I also agree the monarchy should be scrapped. Absolute joke.

Have to agree with you in this day and age irs ridiculous we have a monarchy .

diddl · 06/09/2022 14:53

What's a "round trip and back"?

2 round trips?

Goosygandy · 06/09/2022 14:54

PoseyFlump · 06/09/2022 14:16

We need a referendum.

Yeah cos the last one went so brilliantly for us all....

Brefugee · 06/09/2022 14:55

to be fair to OP it was 2 planes. So technically, OP is right and the Pedant Army can step back and lay down their arms Grin

TimBoothseyes · 06/09/2022 14:55

If she wanted them to go to Balmoral then she should have paid for them to get there. As it is taxpayers have to fork out for 2 planes. Can't see why she couldn't get back to London, but I guess her "holiday" is more important....those stags won't shoot themselves.

ItsSnowJokes · 06/09/2022 14:56

I'm sure Truss was able to work on the journey to and from Scotland. Like millions of other people do every day while commuting ffs.

musicaldilemma · 06/09/2022 14:57

I think she should abdicate now whilst she still has the mental capacity to do so, legally speaking. What will happen if she is simply too frail and confused to reign? I think that would be an unnecessary mess.
We are essentially at war and really do not need anything that overcomplicated anything, constitutionally speaking.
Our currency has been sinking and we have been in limbo since Brexit, another mess this summer with no PM and energy crisis.

I have been suspecting an announcement from the Palace for a while now and thought they were just waiting for the new PM. Let’s see what happens.

@ellyoctober

What's a "1000 mile round trip and back"?

London to Balmoral is 516 miles.

So it's actually 1,032 miles.

Have you heard of Googlemaps?

I may be wrong, but I think the poster was referring to the "and back" part. The phrase "round trip" indicates that it's there and back. Adding "and back" made it sound like more than one trip.

We need a referendum.

Wouldn't mind a referendum. I don't care either way but the OH is a staunch royalist, so I would vote to keep. I reckon that 'keep the Royals' would win comprehensively. Surprisingly, the general population doesn't reflect mumsnet!

PoseyFlump · 06/09/2022 14:16

We need a referendum.

No we don’t.

feellikeanalien · 06/09/2022 15:03

Although I do think the concept of monarchy is ridiculous these days I dread to think what abolishing them would entail. Another divisive referendum and then an election for a president. I have no faith that the people of this country would vote for a decent president.

The country is in such a mess already that this is the last thing we need.

Get rid of the hangers on and make them more like the Swedish or Dutch royals.

I know that you can't just refuse to do something because it is difficult but I really don't think now is the time.

maddiemookins16mum · 06/09/2022 15:05

She will never abdicate, she won’t want to be the same as her Uncle (regardless as to there being different reasons - i.e old age v ‘the woman he loves’)

vera99 · 06/09/2022 15:07

Time for the lot of them and pack their bags and become citizens and pay their full whack of tax and inheritance taxes.

This.

midsomermurderess · 06/09/2022 15:08

Things still seem to be working, solutions are being found so she can still do her weekly audiences, she still seems to be sharp mentally. So no, there seems no need for her to abdicate.

Blossomtoes · 06/09/2022 15:11

PoseyFlump · 06/09/2022 14:16

We need a referendum.

We really don’t. The last one was quite bad enough.

KentuckyDerbyandJoan · 06/09/2022 15:12

Don’t be ridiculous OP 🥱

Lolliepoppie · 06/09/2022 15:14

I quite like the fact that it’s taking place in Scotland for one.

Brefugee · 06/09/2022 15:16

Although I do think the concept of monarchy is ridiculous these days I dread to think what abolishing them would entail. Another divisive referendum and then an election for a president. I have no faith that the people of this country would vote for a decent president.

the problem, so often, in these discussions is that there is a) little imagination about who could be president (literally anyone - we can choose how that is decided. Same as the US and have to be born in the country? have to be a citizen of the country? have to have lived there for the last 5 years? any and all of these and any number of other qualifications could be chosen) and b) little imagination about how they are picked.

In Germany the president is nominated (I think) by the ruling party (wasn't part of my citizenship test, my bad) but is selected by a committee of prominent people (again have never checked how they're selected) but they are by no means all politicians. That's one model that works.

People confuse a president with executive power, with what we would require which is a head of state with the title president but (little or) no executive power. Like the queen. Or we could do what they do in the USA and combine the role of executive leader (PM) with head of state. But then you have the danger of Johnson or Truss. So nope.

Rowgtfc72 · 06/09/2022 15:18

Not ashamed to admit I'm a royalist. She'll never abdicate- the vows she made at the coronation, she made for life. The Queen is good value for money I believe.

I'm also sensible enough to realise the entire royal family as a collective is a dinosaur. Its had its day. And needs to end with The Queen.

As for Boris and Liz? Hopefully today wasn't a jolly and work was done. I think we've got bigger issues with our government than with The Queen to be quite honest.

Suedomin · 06/09/2022 15:18

She won't abdicate and I don't see why she should unless she wants to.
I don't see any reason why the handover wasn't done by zoom though . The problem was not the Queen not travelling it was the establishment not thinking a bit more creatively

Fink · 06/09/2022 15:19

CatherinedeBourgh · 06/09/2022 14:15

Meh, at least if she's travelling Truss won't be fucking up the country just yet...

I have no time for monarchies in general but am fairly fond of old Liz. Once she's gone, it's all downhill from there...

I'm fairly sure she won't have been spending those plane journeys reading the inflight magazines and doing the sudoku Grin

Also loving the fact that the OP doesn't know what the term 'round trip' means and that this is causing more discussion than the political point she was making. Grin

She also doesn't seem to know how to use inverted commas, given the use of the phrase "our new 'Prime Minister'", I'm disappointed to be the first pedant to point that out, over an hour into the thread. Unless I skimmed over it in another post, in which case, apologies to my fellow pedant.

toastofthetown · 06/09/2022 15:23

Surely the point of a hereditary monarchy is that no matter how unsuitable they are, unless they want to quit, we are stuck with our head of state for their entire natural life.

Mummyoflittledragon · 06/09/2022 15:23

ItsJustASimpleLine · 06/09/2022 14:23

Take a break may be a bit high brow for her. Think she's more of a Biff, Chip and Kipper lass

Grin Grin.

As for the question, nope, definitely not.

vera99 · 06/09/2022 15:24

She's not QE2 in Scotland as the first Lizzie was only of England. They probably wouldn't win a referendum to keep the monarchy in Scotland either. Charles the 3rd needs to be careful and will have a lifelong tab of Andrew to pay for - assuming he wants to.

Just a thought we could have a system where those in favour crowdfund the sovereign grant currently at £86 million so effectively an opt-out for those that don't wish to pay.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-61685855

The poll also suggested that while 58% of people in Britain as a whole favoured keeping the monarchy, just 45% felt the same in Scotland.
Other polls in recent years have produced similar results.
