To think we're about to witness a repeat of Labour's wrong Miliband brother moment?

How Liz will won above Rishi is beyond me. I mean, I know they're both Tories and we are where we are but her interview with Laura K on Sunday really worried me.

I feel like the country is on a knife edge waiting to see what she will announce and I'm 99% sure it just won't be enough and it will start a chain of events that will make for such a difficult time for this country.

I do think it would be stopped if Rishi were PM or at least kerbed but I feel that the Tory party are about to make the wrong decision with who they chose and with it will bring dire consequences for the country.

I would think it would make them unelectable but if they've selected an ERG PM then who knows any more? Maybe I'm just a cynic but I'm so concerned about the next few weeks and months.

Well, I think it’s probably going to be considerably more catastrophic for the country than the Millibands to be honest.

Truss and her cronies are essentially fascists

EmmaH2022 · 05/09/2022 01:57

I was wondering the other way
assumption is Truss but it may not be

can't recall what odds were on David and Ed though.

Nekomata · 05/09/2022 02:36

Truss is awful, but maybe it will be the catalyst to finally get rid of the Tories. 🙏

wackamole · 05/09/2022 02:46

I think the Conservatives had their David Miliband moment when they failed to select Rory Stewart, leaving him to fuck off to the USA and impress people there instead. ('Course I suppose Sunak may do that too; there's got to be some reason he kept that green card for a couple of decades.... but I don't think he's any match for Rory or David.)

RunningSME · 05/09/2022 03:02

Truss will most definitely bring forward the downfall so I’m bloody glad they voted for her, if they have

Oblomov22 · 05/09/2022 03:36

My mum says she read an article in the independent about them both. Simply that a part of the Conservative party thought she was a better choice because she was weaker/more controllable. But it said that the public shouldn't trust Truss because she will just follow Conservative party line, and will do what's best for them, rather than what's best for the public.

I look at all parties, kier starmer in Labour who just doesn't have the strength either and has been disappointing. the recent 6 person leadership battle. I look at them all and it's such a pitiful picture. I just think is this the best we've got?

NOTANUM · 05/09/2022 03:53

About a year ago, maybe a bit more, I was in the home of proper Conservatives and the subject of Boris and a future leadership came up. All three of them immediately said Liz Truss. Now, I like my politics and follow closely, and even I was like really?

There’s something about her that appeals to the core membership: she’s the type who would be the parish council leader, the vicar, runs the WI, a headmistress.. Recognisable to everyone, gets on with them all and above all, no danger.

She is however financially illiterate: she wants to spend like a labour leader and tax like a conservative leader. It is the politics of students: let’s tax companies! Yeah that works until they pull out of Britain entirely for lower cost options.

I am genuinely fearful.

Eviebeans · 05/09/2022 03:56

I’m watching Liz Truss talking to Laura Kuenssberg. I’m not a fan and of the two would prefer Rishi Sinai. I find her really worrying. I can’t see from what she is saying now how she will act swiftly to put in place things to help people (almost everyone) who will be struggling with energy bills.

cansu · 05/09/2022 06:40

Notanum Sounds like you have spent too long in tory homes as you are parroting the usual bullshit.

Can you provide evidence / examples of Truss and her cronies being fascists please?

FourTeaFallOut · 05/09/2022 06:47

By what metric is Truss essentially a fascist?

MintJulia · 05/09/2022 06:49

I don't understand how they can choose Truss over Sunak either. She's just not bright enough, and her grasp of economics is woeful.

Hippywannabe · 05/09/2022 06:54

I totally agree. I thought Rishi would walk it at the beginning and win. Part of me wonders if 'the plan' is to have her fail and Boris to make a triumphant comeback!

Fladdermus · 05/09/2022 06:58

I am extremely worried about the path the UK is going down. Liz Truss is about to hit like a wrecking ball. God help you all.

donquixotedelamancha · 05/09/2022 07:01

By what metric is Truss essentially a fascist?

PP is using fascist to mean 'someone I disagree with'.

I don't like Truss but it's utterly moronic to say she's a fascist.

#DizzyLizzy, #ThickLizzy or #JobbyGirl is dim.

She's malleable, easily persuaded and has little grasp of finance and economic matters

She's an unknown quantity and eyed with suspicion by a lot of people outside her bubble

EveSix · 05/09/2022 07:03

I agree with Whackamole. Rory Stewart was the one that got away -the Conservative Party's David Milliband moment. But Ed was in no way equivalent to Truss.

ShowLess · 05/09/2022 07:04

Rishi’s policies are essentially un-conservative, and that’s why he may not win.

Sirius3030 · 05/09/2022 07:07

FourTeaFallOut · 05/09/2022 06:47

By what metric is Truss essentially a fascist?

Fascism always depends on the creation of the enemy within. I think Truss is already starting to demonise certain sectors of our populace. Striking workers, lefty lawyers, immigrants of course, anyone who stands up for a belief is ‘woke’. It won’t end in harmony that is for sure.

FrecklesMalone · 05/09/2022 07:10

I agree OP at the beginning of summer she was liked by the Tory party members in a few short weeks that has decreased dramatically. She is essentially unlikable, and will further damage the party. As Johnson was she is right of most party members view points. And definitely right of the electorate. However she does have the (dubious but definitely there) charm of Johnson. The public will not like her especially when they are freezing.

FrecklesMalone · 05/09/2022 07:10

She does NOT have the dubious charm of Johnson

PermanentTemporary · 05/09/2022 07:11

I hear a lot of Conservative minded people talking at work - in a hospital - and tbh they tend to literally parrot her own campaign slogans - that she 'gets things done' (unspecified) and one said he wished she was his mum 🙄The dressing up like Thatcher stuff seems to work in a way I never thought it could.

I don't think she's a fascist. I think she's weak though, like Johnson, and doing the populist bit (GB News getting its facts straight??) without being brutal enough to pull it off. Insulting the media in an interview and then apologising on the quiet just suggests she'll say anything to anyone. I certainly find it very difficult to look at the admittedly uninspiring choice of Sunak and her and going ooh yes, she's the one.

Unbridezilla · 05/09/2022 07:14

I saw Trussed woeful interview yesterday too. Absolutely no content. Particularly around short term living cost issues. What has Rishi said he would do in terms of that? (I've switched off from the whole thing tge last few weeks tbh)

PermanentTemporary · 05/09/2022 07:17

Oh and Civil Service opinion seems to be that she's pretty useless. PM is different from minister but there's no suggestion that she has the extra nous for it.

CockingASnook · 05/09/2022 07:26

The idea of Liz Truss as PM is so laughable it is surreal. She’s thick and slow-witted, a terrible public speaker and appears to have no firmly held principles. Like her Dad, I feel embarrassed by her as leader. She’ll be worse than Johnson but whether that’s enough to put off all the Red Wall Brexit voters is a moot point.
