To feel sad it's now getting dark early

Just another reminder that we are losing our Summer with the nights now drawing in?
Why does it have to fly by so fast?

Nights always seem longer when it's dark.

I feel you. I start feeling a bit blue as soon as we reach the solstice in June. Strangely find the winter one more hopeful - when we have “turned the year”!

I'm exactly the same. Sunset stays at the same time for a week after the summer solstice but after than I always feel a pang that it's now going the wrong way. Whereas I perk up after the 19th December because however dark it is, however early, it's going the right way.

*Can you tell I take this very seriously??😊Although Dec 21st is the shortest day, sunset actually starts getting later at night on the 19th. But it's only by a few seconds and sunrise gets later by more, so for those two days the overall effect is to shorten the day length. And yes, sunset doesn't get earlier for a week after the 21st June.

So if you're coming here to vent your spleen about the "horrible, hot" summer, and glory in the approach of (cold, dark, damp, fucking miserable) autumn and winter, could you not? Could you, in fact, fuck the fuck off instead?

there’s a thread on going now with people literally so skint they need to time showers. Wishing in winter. Knowing the poverty people will be in. How they will be cold and can’t afford to heat their homes makes me queasy that anyone could relish it.

Gymnopedie · 02/09/2022 21:51

Sorry about the bold^^, I used two asterisks to reference my comment at the bottom but it had an unexpected effect.

FancyFelix · 02/09/2022 21:51

I don't even care about the dark or the cold. I just want the kids to fuck off back to school so we can all get back to normal.

whatsthestory123 · 02/09/2022 21:53

does anybody love that autumn smell you get at nig
havent noticed it yet though

ButyouwereuptoyouroldtricksinChaptersFourFiveandSix · 02/09/2022 21:56

Posted too soon: this summer has been downright unpleasant, I’ll be glad to see the back of it!

Changemaname1 · 02/09/2022 21:56

@whatsthestory123 I noticed it just last night !!!!

as I said in a previous post I do like autumn but will miss the summer this year , it’s the grey wet miserable winter days I hate 😔 something tells me this year will be even worse than normal

i will one day move back to a hot country though 🙏🏼

Changemaname1 · 02/09/2022 21:57

@whatsthestory123 just the first part of my post was aimed at you it kind of read like the whole thing was a reply to you there

GoodVibesHere · 02/09/2022 21:58

I do like the fact that BBQs have come to an end now that the evenings are shorter, as they bloody stink!

Gymnopedie · 02/09/2022 21:58

Mumsnet, where people practically spit with rage because not everyone likes the same seasons as them. This forum is fucking insane. Why on earth would you be cross about people liking boots and jumpers, ffs?

It works both ways. Will those who hate summer please stop moaning about summer dresses and sandals and how mean we all are to be daring to enjoy the hot weather, and stop saying how they can't wait for summer to be over?

DappledOliveGroves · 02/09/2022 21:58

I'm just happier that the mornings are darker so that when baby DD wakes up at 4am I can try and persuade her it's still the middle of the night and definitely not time for breakfast!

AgnestaVipers · 02/09/2022 21:59

I hate midsummer solstice for this reason. I love the winter solstice!

UrsulaPandress · 02/09/2022 21:12

I do love seasons but the dark nights seem to have rushed in this year.

I’m sure when I was a lass August/September days were much longer.

This year it does feel like we have gone pretty much straight from heatwave to getting wintery with very little in between.

PersianStar · 02/09/2022 22:02

I must admit I am looking forward to DD3 not trying to get up at 5am because “it’s daytime mummy” Also see trying to not go to bed until 10pm for the same reason!
other than that I am an autumn lover, it’s just such a beautiful season, my mum tells me I’ve been the same since tiny.

Lockheart · 02/09/2022 22:03

All seasons have their pros and cons.

I will miss the light evenings, but it's still light until just after 8pm at the moment. That's not early.

MintyGreenDreams · 02/09/2022 22:04

Its darker mornings that I hate don't mind the nights

WLAH · 02/09/2022 22:04

Feeling sad also. 😔 summer has flew by. Hate the slippery roads

I can't wait to wear my chunky jumper and boots and then get home and have a snuggle under a blankie on the sofa with a hot choc and looking forward to Christmas.

I was so impatient I've worn my chunky jumper over my bikini all summer, and moved my sofa into the garden so I could snuggle up while the bbq got going.😊

Verbena1 · 02/09/2022 22:06

Hot chocolate, yuk. But summer was a bit much for me and my poor garden this year.

DontKeepTheFaith · 02/09/2022 22:06

It does seem to be changing very rapidly this year. The mornings are cooler and evenings darker.

I love autumn and I welcome the change initially, particularly after such a hot summer but I hate how long winter lasts so will be complaining very soon🤣🤣

Bonjovispjs · 02/09/2022 22:07

Hate autumn with a passion, when you notice it getting darker, so bloody depressing. It's like autumn is rubbing it in our faces that winter's coming and there's nothing we can do about it. I'm not bothered about it being hot in the summer, but I love the light evenings, going to work in the dark and coming home in the dark is shit.

WeeMadArthur1 · 02/09/2022 22:08

Yes I always start to feel down around this time of year once it starts getting dark.

I can only assume the pumpkin latte and snuggly blanket candle people don't have to work or go out anywhere, otherwise there's no way anyone would prefer getting up and coming home in the dark, getting wet, scraping the car, having to clean mud off shoes, etc.
