To think that Liz Truss as PM will mean a Labour government?

VicToryA · 26/08/2022 20:13

I am no fan of this so-called Conservative government (thanks to Brexit and lockdowns, both of which I detest). So I suppose I'm a lifelong centre-ish Conservative with a desire not to have a bunch of loony lefties in control, but with no real political home at the moment.

Given a choice between Truss and Sunak, I would have to choose Sunak. I know, though, that it will end up with Truss as PM.

AIBU to think this will mean a Labour government and years in the political wilderness for the Conservative party?

@User135644 I agree that Brexit was a huge factor in 2019 and gave the Tories the landslide.
But the working class still vote Tory because it's aspirational - thought of course they're unaware of being targeted by the right wing media.
Add to that, Keir Starmer not being a particularly charismatic leader and the distrust with Labour's front bench especially because of "I'm afraid there is no money" DM headlne from 2010.

Some working class will always doff their caps to the Tories but the idea the Tories are aspirational anymore is a joke anyway (at least that had some merit with Thatcher). They only look out for their rich mates and everyone else can go to hell.

In reality most working class cities are still mostly Labour. The difference in towns has been an ageing population and older people more likely to vote Tory, particularly home owners. There was also Brexit thrown into that (again older voters swung that vote).

Younger people are overwhelmingly Labour or anyone but Tory.

User135644 · 27/08/2022 09:13

Younger people are overwhelmingly Labour or anyone but Tory.

And that was never the case in the Thatcher days, a majority of younger people voted for her. That generation are now 40 years older and the Tories core vote.

Bollindger · 27/08/2022 09:14

Truss isn't stupid.
Look at all the trade deals she got signed.
No way was this her work, all this was done by others and she was bright enough to pick the best bits and use them.
So why will she not do this as PM, read the briefs and push through what the country needs?

Cornettoninja · 27/08/2022 09:17

The Torys want to make work pay more, than benefits

Do they? It’s been twelve years and in-work benefits are still a large component of many households.

catgirl1976 · 27/08/2022 09:19

I am a life long labour voter and I think the current government is the worst in our history and Liz Truss is atrocious. I won’t vote Tory.

BUT I can’t vote labour or Lib Dem because of their horrific stance on women rights (they don’t even know what a woman is)

So I’m politically homeless. At a time when an opposition party should have a bloody open door they are throwing it away

Trade deals that in every single case are worse than the deals we previously had under EU membership.

As for not being stupid? try google Truss and Cheese speech (i bet you don't) or wonder why she was soooo very strongly Remain but is now hard core Leave, inc suggesting Macron is an enemy of the UK.

Loony Lefties?

Loony cons too.

They’re all in it for themselves. I think cons have fucked it though and Labour will get back in (fingers crossed).

When Starmer got the leadership I was pleased, a shift to centre was something that could bring me back as a voter

I can’t say Labour have managed it so far for various reasons

As for pp I agree mn is strong on Labour supporters but the polls are showing a lead, the GE is a while away so we’ll see what happens

A large part imo is external timing - so if we see energy price drops it depends when it happens

Endlesssummer2022 · 27/08/2022 09:26

‘The next general election isn’t until 2025, why do people think that we will have a new government before then?’

I actually think she may call a GE this November. This way she will benefit from the ‘new leader bounce’ plus it won’t be cold enough yet for people to see the winter energy prices plus inflation still wouldn’t have peaked. She then gets 5 long years to finish off the ERG wish list and complete the transfer of taxpayers cash to rich donors. If she waits until later the honeymoon shine will have gone and we will be in the depths of a recession.

To the PP who said the Tory party vote is ‘aspirational’. I think that time has passed. When it was led by Thatcher, the city types etc would champion her. Also others who were on the up and up. Now its starting to be seen as a vote for the spiteful or those with nothing to lose who want to pull others down with them. That is not aspirational.

I think Kier Starmer seems like an intelligent, level headed man. The media is mostly Tory isn't it? Hence no labour leader will be seen in a good light.

You joking? The BBC is a left-leaning, Guardian-toting organisation for a start. That is supposed to be our neutral national broadcaster. Thankfully they have just got rid of the likes of dear Emily and one or tw o others.

VicToryA · 27/08/2022 09:35

maddy68 · 27/08/2022 08:49

So you would not vote for a better , fairer country because you don't agree with one tiny issue ?

"That, too" would suggest that it's one of many things with which I don't agree.

I just researched the cheese speech.
A person says we eat more apples and pears than we grow.
The person is going to be PM and says to land owners here is help to replant orchards, organic UK product room in the supermarkets for the product less air miles. How can that be wrong?
Yorkshire tea, industrial success, how is that wrong?
A new cheese factory opens up makes cheese sells cheese! Problem?
Sometimes I worry that common sense gets overlooked by people to win an argument.

LaQuern · 27/08/2022 09:42

Lol! Good response, i'll give you that, though the substance of her speech has passed you by.

Apples and cheese is not going to boost our GDP or pay the billions needed to get us out of this energy crisis and her trade deals and brexit stance will ensure we wont have the milk to make the cheese nor the farmers and fruit pickers for the apples and pears we have now.

Of course, she is soo stupid she doesn't realise that fresh fruit has a very short season, so we import from countries that have different growing seasons.

The next general election isn’t until 2025, why do people think that we will have a new government before then? Wouldn’t the Conservative party have to allow that to happen? Why would they do that even if they have a completely useless idiot at PM? There is no way they would call a snap election knowing how likely they would be to lose, right?

sorry I’m not a political expert, if someone can explain I would appreciate it.

I think it's late 2024

BaileySharp · 27/08/2022 09:51

Maybe. Lizz Truss way less popular with the masses than Boris Johnson, but labour need to show that they're the better choice. I think they need a solution to inflation/energy crisis (maybe nationalising to prevent this happening again)

luckylavender · 27/08/2022 09:52

@User135644 - these are the sorts of comments that show a complete lack of education. Maybe do some research on what the last Labour government delivered and find out who founded the NHS.

luckylavender · 27/08/2022 09:53

Sorry those last comments were meant for @Westpoint

Bollindger · 27/08/2022 09:54

I truly am confused, she is totally just giving examples of things we can change. Small steps totally possible it does not mean that is all she think.
She wants to grow the UK as a producer, she is actually saying she wants us to produce things again, an apple, a car, a ship.. your against a PM that wants people to be able to manufacture things?

luckylavender · 27/08/2022 09:55

@Malie - there is no way the BBC is left leaning. Any more than the Guardian is run by a right wing think tank.

I have a good many Tory family & friends. Almost all of them didn't vote Tory in the last election because of Johnson. They would mostly vote Starmer instead of Truss or Johnson.

FiveDollarMilkshake · 27/08/2022 09:58

Nope. As long as Labour politicians are unable to say what a women is, they’re not being re-elected anytime soon.

Gilead · 27/08/2022 10:01

@Westpoint Labour have done a considerable amount for the country, think about hit next time you don’t have to pay to see your GP.
Or next time you drop your child at school.

sst1234 · 27/08/2022 10:08

StoneofDestiny · 27/08/2022 01:40

but you need to ask yourself what have Labour done for this country? Ever? Erm, that would be nothing

oh dear. Extreme ignorance. No wonder we get Tory Governments like this shower

To name a few things achieved by Labour Governments:
Council Housing
Social Security
NHS
Public ownership of key industries
Decriminalisation of Homosexuality
Ending the Death Penalty
Outlawing Racial Discrimination
Equal Pay Act
National Minimum Wage
Good Friday Agreement
The Open University
Civil Partnerships
Equality Act
Human Rights Act
Climate Change Act
Cancelling Debt of Poorest Countries

Look at how many have been driven to braking point by Tory Governments. Look at our NHS. Look at how The Good Friday Agreement is in a perilous state because of Johnson's betrayal and deceit. Ever tried to get a Council House?

So they’re just social workers. Fair enough if you think that’s all government should do.

Unfortunately all grand social schemes need to be paid for. You know that thing called the economy, which labour have a terrible track record on.

Yes the Tories are evidently doing a bad job on the economy but Labour have NEVER done a good job on the economy.

Walkden · 27/08/2022 10:10

"Nope. As long as Labour politicians are unable to say what a women is, they’re not being re-elected anytime soon."

I'm sure like most political parties they have done their analysis on this and the numbers of voters it will attract /alienate.

It may be a key issue for you but does it really make them unelectable? Time will tell I guess.
