To think that Liz Truss as PM will mean a Labour government?

I am no fan of this so-called Conservative government (thanks to Brexit and lockdowns, both of which I detest). So I suppose I'm a lifelong centre-ish Conservative with a desire not to have a bunch of loony lefties in control, but with no real political home at the moment.

Given a choice between Truss and Sunak, I would have to choose Sunak. I know, though, that it will end up with Truss as PM.

AIBU to think this will mean a Labour government and years in the political wilderness for the Conservative party?

@catgirl1976 "Politically homeless" sums it up for me too!

‘I kind of disagree. David Cameron appealed to the aspirational type. The "work hard and get rewarded" message really cut through with the working class and it still does.’

Actually I agree with you that David Cameron still had an aspirational message. I should have said the message actually changed at the end of his tenure i.e Brexit vote and it became anti expert e.g. ‘we’ve had enough of experts’. It became anti- further education. It became about the ‘real people’ verses the ‘citizens of nowhere’ who had broad horizons and experience of travel and other cultures so would never fall for believing everything in the U.K. was the best and ‘world beating’. It was against the elites e.g anyone in big cities who had ever bought a Latte.

It was for being spiteful and small minded and blaming ‘the sharp elbowed middle classes’ for why you don’t have a pot to piss in. It’s for being jealous of people on benefits as if that’s something to aspire to. It’s this new version of the Conservatives I mean which is not aspirational at all.

Yes and there is a word for what you describe so eloquently, "populist". You're right, it's not an aspirational message at all but somehow people will keep falling for it, but maybe not in such huge numbers to give the Tories an 80-seat majority this time though.

@Alexandra2001 I am really annoyed with her for making that comment to Macron. I think she is going to be a disaster for our wider diplomacy.

@sst1234 If you you really think the list below is just 'social work', let's hope you are a minority at the next election

To name a few things achieved by Labour Governments:
Council Housing
Social Security
NHS
Public ownership of key industries
Decriminalisation of Homosexuality
Ending the Death Penalty
Outlawing Racial Discrimination
Equal Pay Act
National Minimum Wage
Good Friday Agreement
The Open University
Civil Partnerships
Equality Act
Human Rights Act
Climate Change Act
Cancelling Debt of Poorest Countries

People who can’t pay their bills, heat their homes or feed their kids will vote for the party with policies that will make their lives better

and hopefully enough principled people who can pay their bills and feed their kids and who believe in 'the common good' will vote to make the lives of others better.

In previous years, the Labour vote was bolstered by the number of Scottish Labour MPs. Unfortunately, unless we break the stranglehold that SNP have on the Scottish electorate, it's going to be close to impossible for labour to win a General Election (and sadly the labour leadership in Scotland is very poor).

It suits the Conservative party to antagonise Scotland's voters, and therefore keep the power in the 'independence' lobby.

And don't forget that there were Conservative initiated boundary changes across the UK which stack their hand :(

Gilead · 28/08/2022 06:23

The boundary commission will not be implementing changes until October, if indeed they are implemented, but yes, they’ll favour the Tories.
