To think that Liz Truss as PM will mean a Labour government?

I am no fan of this so-called Conservative government (thanks to Brexit and lockdowns, both of which I detest). So I suppose I'm a lifelong centre-ish Conservative with a desire not to have a bunch of loony lefties in control, but with no real political home at the moment.

Given a choice between Truss and Sunak, I would have to choose Sunak. I know, though, that it will end up with Truss as PM.

AIBU to think this will mean a Labour government and years in the political wilderness for the Conservative party?

Depending where we are living I will be voting tactically for labour or Lib Dem.

There are a few looney lefties but on the whole there are plenty of sensible pragmatists in there too in the current administration .

Genuinely embarrassed for you.

Is that meant to be some kind of put down?

Try harder.

Bollindger · 26/08/2022 23:50

OK, Labour need the biggest swing of votes ever to win the next election.
Due to Scotland no longer voting Labour that is a massive loss that needs making up for.
Boundary changes are helping the Torys not Labour.
Then you have tactical voting needing to be organised to secure seats..
If Putin falls and he will prices will go down.
Covid going away is going to improve things .
Liz Truss will want to help herself win so will have policys in place to make herself look good, Labour can't do this.
The Labour need to find a winning headline grabbing policy , won't that be interesting to see.
All this to swing the older voter and the working class need wooing.

Yeah right.....any know where the magic lamp went and does it still work..

I'd have said it's pretty clear what it is. Embarrassment for you.

Well, there’s the NHS…
but if you don’t want to go back that far, all the stuff here. Honestly, you can’t believe what you wrote?

Well, aren't you quite the poster girl

Not really.

Maybebabyno2 · 26/08/2022 23:55

I don't think Labour actually want to win tbh. They know they will have yo turn the contract around, help the poor, give everyone free WiFi as per their promises. They know they can't do it so try to make themselves unelectable.

They will be shifting it if Tory keep digging their own grave.

sweetheartyparty · 27/08/2022 00:11

Im a leftie and not at all loony

Florenz · 27/08/2022 00:33

Free wi-fi is just nonsense. I have absolutely no idea why Corbyn started going on about that just before the last election.

MangyInseam · 27/08/2022 01:03

I think it's much too soon to tell. It will depend on how Truss manages, and that may depend on who she has around her.

And somewhat on luck as well, what happens in the world in the next two years.

But it also will depend on what the Labour Party does. They don't seem to have any intent of showing the voters any respect.

Truss certainly doesn't have the charisma of Boris, so she will be on more of an even platform with Starmer in that area.

MangyInseam · 27/08/2022 01:19

NotABeliever · 26/08/2022 22:11

@User135644 I agree that Brexit was a huge factor in 2019 and gave the Tories the landslide.
But the working class still vote Tory because it's aspirational - thought of course they're unaware of being targeted by the right wing media.
Add to that, Keir Starmer not being a particularly charismatic leader and the distrust with Labour's front bench especially because of "I'm afraid there is no money" DM headlne from 2010.

I wouldn't underestimate the fact that the working classes know that most of the LP despises them and thinks they are embarrassing.

I think that's almost impossible to come back from, many people would prefer to vote for someone they think is a liar or even incompetent than someone they think despises them.

StoneofDestiny · 27/08/2022 01:40

but you need to ask yourself what have Labour done for this country? Ever? Erm, that would be nothing

oh dear. Extreme ignorance. No wonder we get Tory Governments like this shower

To name a few things achieved by Labour Governments:
Council Housing
Social Security
NHS
Public ownership of key industries
Decriminalisation of Homosexuality
Ending the Death Penalty
Outlawing Racial Discrimination
Equal Pay Act
National Minimum Wage
Good Friday Agreement
The Open University
Civil Partnerships
Equality Act
Human Rights Act
Climate Change Act
Cancelling Debt of Poorest Countries

Look at how many have been driven to braking point by Tory Governments. Look at our NHS. Look at how The Good Friday Agreement is in a perilous state because of Johnson's betrayal and deceit. Ever tried to get a Council House?

StoneofDestiny · 27/08/2022 01:46

I think that's almost impossible to come back from, many people would prefer to vote for someone they think is a liar or even incompetent than someone they think despises them

If that was true we will never have another Tory Government again. Or do you really thing Rees Mogg, Liz Truss, Boris Johnson, Sunak and Patel give a shit about working class people? You do realise they are trying to make it illegal to protest, strike etc...........

MarshaBradyo · 27/08/2022 01:53

I don’t know, people on both sides seem very certain they will win

I wouldn’t call it yet, a lot depends on external factors - ie Ukraine war

TenRedThings · 27/08/2022 02:01

This Tory governments policies only make sense if you understand that the aim is to destroy Britain as we know it and loot any remaining public assets whilst everyone is reeling from the economic mayhem they've instigated.

CactusBlossom · 27/08/2022 02:06

The Tories have done more than enough damage.

Video example

They deserve to be out of power.

Teddeh · 27/08/2022 02:41

If you're saying the next election will be decided based on which specific person is leader of the Conservative Party - e.g., Sunak would win but Truss would lose - I think you're oversimplifying a very complex situation. People may be catastrophising now, but it's not hard to imagine Liz Truss (or Rishi Sunak) as PM once that person already IS PM.

Labour need to focus on WINNING a majority of seats in a general election (or at least more seats than the Conservatives) by getting voters to vote for them, not just hoping their opponents lose their majority because voters turn against them.

Nat6999 · 27/08/2022 03:10

Looking at the videos of Keir Starmer speaking in the last couple of days about the energy crisis, he has changed. He is now speaking like a Prime Minister, he is speaking with more authority & confidence, I don't know if he has had some kind of training but he is speaking much better & the way he is speaking instills more confidence. The priorities he is saying about the energy crisis say more than anything the Tories aren't saying because let's face it we haven't heard anything but hot air from them.

Malie · 27/08/2022 07:20

It’s very funny when you comment how useless this opposition has been - and anyone with an IQ of over 35 can see that surely - and someone calls you a ‘Tory boot licker’. What planet are these people on? 😀

Bollindger · 27/08/2022 07:24

I don't think the Energy Crisis is a good policy to base an Election on.
Putin is not going to win his war, and once he goes, Energy Prices should drop more.
The new PM will have to help people Now, not in 3 years time and won't just grandstand, but actually have the power to do something.
Traditionally Labour gives away things look at how Tax Credits and Children's Credits increased so more babies meant more money if you were Unemployed. That untill the rent cap people were being give money to rent massions.
The Torys want to make work pay more, than benefits.

Bollindger · 27/08/2022 07:34

Can we think of some policys Labour can adopt.
Park and ride for hospitals, valet parking if your disabled, free bus service and staff parking area, then they build on the hospital parking areas flats to house hospital staff.

Dragonsmother · 27/08/2022 07:48

None of the current political parties are fit for purpose.
We are in this mess under a TORY party.

I blame stupid media like Daily Mail for false stories, misinformation and stirring up shit storms.

Sack the lot of them. We need a coalition govt to get us through this mess.

malificent7 · 27/08/2022 07:50

I think Kier Starmer seems like an intelligent, level headed man. The media is mostly Tory isn't it? Hence no labour leader will be seen in a good light.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 27/08/2022 07:51

I’m not a Tory voter but even trying to be objective I don’t think it matters now whether Truss or Sunak is the PM. The best case scenario for this over the next couple of years is that things will be a bit shit. The most likely scenario is that things will be very shit.

so by the time of next general election, people will simply want to try something different. As long as Labour don’t do anything monumentally stupid they should end up either in power or at least the largest party - I think a Lab / Lib Dem coalition is a possibility

Endlesssummer2022 · 27/08/2022 07:52

This government isn’t Conservative its UKIP in all but name. Farage has crowed that many of his supporters joined the Conservatives to get this exact result. Now we are all suffering under an ultra libertarian Darwinian fantasy government. We are all fucked until they are removed.
