To think that Liz Truss as PM will mean a Labour government?

VicToryA · 26/08/2022 20:13

I am no fan of this so-called Conservative government (thanks to Brexit and lockdowns, both of which I detest). So I suppose I'm a lifelong centre-ish Conservative with a desire not to have a bunch of loony lefties in control, but with no real political home at the moment.

Given a choice between Truss and Sunak, I would have to choose Sunak. I know, though, that it will end up with Truss as PM.

AIBU to think this will mean a Labour government and years in the political wilderness for the Conservative party?

Have you read the news reports?
Even main stream news think KS is a joke and Labour are AWOL as a party.
No policys people can get behind, no leader and no way forward.
If JC failed to win with all his support, unless a miracle happens It will be Tory.
Also Labour's always offered tax cuts and extra money, oh yes the Torys will be doing that.. on top of that no Labour Govenment has ever got into power when the UK is in crisis. Plus they don't really get 2nd terms.

One can only hope...

It’s hard to believe, but even Truss is more charismatic than Starmer. That’s how low the bar is. Has Starmer ever explained his support for magic grandpa, a second Brexit referendum, more lockdowns in 2021. He seems to always back the wrong horse and is surrounded by village idiots on the front bench.

Its woeful that the government has been allowed to get away with such incompetence by an even worse opposition.

I take it you don't stay up to date with any political polling?

x2boys · 26/08/2022 20:45

Labour media somebody who has a bit more about them then Keir Starmer ,the last time they had a landslide was Tony Blair, and as much as I hate the guy ,he was certainly charismatic and made people believe things could only get better and did for a while.

Nobody cares though, because he’s not in power. So if our choice is a useless, incompetent, corrupt Tory government for the fourteenth year OR a useless, incompetent different party for a change then that’s where people will go.

User4668430 · 26/08/2022 20:48

I doubt it

sst1234 · 26/08/2022 20:48

A lot can change in 18 months. Don’t underestimate the Tories. Unless Starmer has a personality transplant and gets rid of the deadwood on his front bench, Labour are getting nowhere near power.

Bollindger · 26/08/2022 20:50

I am just plain Mrs Joe Bloggs.
If I could show you my past posts on Mumsnet I have not called an election wrong in 20 years. I have had major words with people on political threads.
Didn't the polls call Brexit wrong, and the Ed Miliband Election.....!

x2boys · 26/08/2022 20:50

They need to bring back Andy Burnham if they want to win I don't necessarily agree with him but i think he would stand a much better chance of winning an election than Keir Starmer

Loony lefties?

Have you lost your way finding the daily mail comments section op?

Grin

Not quite, but I've referred to them in that way for the past 35 years and I'm not stopping now.

still loathe this Conservative government, though

He doesn’t need one. The Tories have done more for Labour in the last six months than Starmer could ever dream of. Their best options are Sunak and Truss!

VicToryA · 26/08/2022 20:52

Interesting to hear views on Starmer and his dead wood. I tend not to pay too much attention to them, but it's interesting and a bit depressing to hear that they are bunch of numpties too.

Never fails to amaze me why Labour aren't doing better in the polls considering all the Tory fuck ups and deception then I realise why...

Sadly for some people there is no limit to the amount of Tory ineptitude and corruption that they are prepared to tolerate.

They'll just keep licking those Tory boots.

Keep your pipe dreams coming. Some of us have lived under socialist governments.

Wonnle · 26/08/2022 20:54

Marxism comrades !!

Milkand2sugarsplease · 26/08/2022 20:54

Loony lefties...? Nothing like being accepting of differing opinions is there...

Your own party isn't exactly glowing at the minute. Zahawi has interesting ideas for the price hikes considering how much he claimed for heating his bloody stables. Perhaps all those struggling should go and squat with his horses...??

AnnaFri · 26/08/2022 20:55

@VicToryA

Not surprised about the age bracket you fall into

Maëlys · 26/08/2022 20:55

Haha no way. We are a one party state now. There is nothing the tories could do that would make the majority of people in my area vote them out. Absolutely everything will be excused with “thank god Labour aren’t in charge as it would be so much worse” 😞

I did say my "own party" is a shower of shits at the moment.

(Stand by the "loony lefties" comment, though, even if it does mean I'm showing my age).

My daughter was inspired to be a politician seeing Jeremy Corbyn and his fight for everyone matters.

I pointed to Kier Starmer and said do you know who he is?

Nope

He needs to just go and give Labour a proper chance. Fucking 'Sir'.

Keep your pipe dreams coming. Some of us have lived under socialist governments.

You don't seem particularly well-informed if

a) you think the UK Labour party is a socialist party

and

b) you think the Tories will win the next general election after 14 years in power and overseeing the worst financial crisis in living memory.

Happy to meet you back on this thread in January 2025 to see who's right (or earlier than that of course if for some reason Truss calls a snap election.)

Maëlys · 26/08/2022 21:02

@x2boys Burnham is much more relatable to most ordinary people. I honestly think that’s a huge part of Labour’s problem. They’re basically all Guardian readers, culturally. And that’s automatically off putting to a hell of a lot of voters. It shouldn’t matter but it does.
