To think that Liz Truss as PM will mean a Labour government?

I am no fan of this so-called Conservative government (thanks to Brexit and lockdowns, both of which I detest). So I suppose I'm a lifelong centre-ish Conservative with a desire not to have a bunch of loony lefties in control, but with no real political home at the moment.

Given a choice between Truss and Sunak, I would have to choose Sunak. I know, though, that it will end up with Truss as PM.

AIBU to think this will mean a Labour government and years in the political wilderness for the Conservative party?

"Nope. As long as Labour politicians are unable to say what a women is, they’re not being re-elected anytime soon."

I'm sure like most political parties they have done their analysis on this and the numbers of voters it will attract /alienate.

It may be a key issue for you but does it really make them unelectable? Time will tell I guess.

I wouldn’t be so sure it’s gauged very well

Look at Mordaunt, leading in polls then as she claimed it was stirred up. Which did work to take her out of the running

I would suggest Labour are aware of the issue hence recent softening or fudging of language around it but it’s hard for them to occupy the clear biological position

I know Mordaunt is just one person v a party but still I think others running now have learnt from her mistake and usually mention where they stand

"I would suggest Labour are aware of the issue hence recent softening or fudging of language around it but it’s hard for them to occupy the clear biological position"

For the vast majority of people I imagine if there's a period of hardship priorities will shift.

It doesn’t have to be against a back drop of no hardship

Again Mordaunt is an indicator of how it can go wrong .Top of the polls to out.

We’ll see what happens, I don’t think there’s much point in being definitive about something in 2024 though as it feels like a fast moving period

But yes I think Labour know that the tide is turning away from their position, maybe they can hope it’ll just go away by then instead

happinessischocolate · 27/08/2022 10:22

Starmer was part of the anyone but Corbyn group who were fucking things up behind the scenes. Many people who will never vote for Labour whilst he's in charge.

Anyone but Starmer and Labour will win the next election. If he stays, he's just as bad as the tories, and it'll be a hung election.

Nope. As long as Labour politicians are unable to say what a women is, they’re not being re-elected anytime soon.

I know this is widely thought on MN but with the wider public trans issues are very low down on the list of issues that people prioritise. The next election will be all about the economy, and a reaction to financial hardships suffered.

I truly am confused, she is totally just giving examples of things we can change. Small steps totally possible it does not mean that is all she think.
She wants to grow the UK as a producer, she is actually saying she wants us to produce things again, an apple, a car, a ship.. your against a PM that wants people to be able to manufacture things?

If she supported the UK staying in Horizon etc & made it easier for eu and other hi skilled nationals to come to the UK, then fair enough.

But her immigration and brexit stance is actually hindering UK business & health services, her comment on Macron shows what an idiot she is.

as FS she ought to know the UK and French forces have been supporting each other in sub Saharan Africa, against ISIS until recently, that French warships have protected our Aircraft carriers and that France is a NATO ally BUT it appears she doesn't know any of this.

Total UK agri is 0.5% of GDP, how much is fruit in all of that? and as i said but you ignore, is that her Trade deals wreck UK farming, which is why she wouldn't appear at a UK agri show the other day.

Bollindger · 27/08/2022 10:45

Mumsnet loved Corbyn and hated Boris, just like Truss on this thread.
Corbyn got the biggest Labour Bounce this century but Boris got the biggest Tory Bounce since 1992.
More people are voting, but Labour are so far behind now that they would need to go coalition to govern, and they won't do that.
All the big wins have had big ideas to campaign on. Labour don't have this right now. Which means swing people will vote Tory.

Alexandra2001 · 27/08/2022 10:47

Teressa May passed legislation that allows male chid rapists to serve their sentences in female prisons.

The current Tory Govt haven't rescinded any of that.

ALL of the current issues with trans and women are down to the Tories, they have eroded womens rights and slashed services... no one else.

Alexandra2001 · 27/08/2022 10:49

Labour are so far behind now that they would need to go coalition to govern, and they won't do that

Lay off the morning booze.

15pts in front, isn't "so far behind"

If that were the result of the next GE, Labour would have a 100 seat majority.

You re just trawling now.

Bollindger · 27/08/2022 10:53

The PM is the one with the power to decide we have no choice other that to just wait and see.
I so hope she is successfully and listens and takes good advice offered.

Bollindger · 27/08/2022 10:55

15 points, but will those eggs hatch?
Somehow I don't think so, ask Ed Miliband.....

basilmint · 27/08/2022 11:06

Look at Mordaunt, leading in polls then as she claimed it was stirred up. Which did work to take her out of the running

Mordant was running for leadership of the Conservative party which is going to have different views on trans issues than the general public.

Walkden · 27/08/2022 11:14

"now that they would need to go coalition to govern, and they won't do that"

Push comes to shove they will go into a coalition with the libdems just like the Tories did...

SapatSea · 27/08/2022 11:30

A big issue for Labour is that they have lost most of the traditional Scottish Labour seats to the SNP. With FPTP they will have a hard time getting enough seats in the rest of the country. They need to be making alliances with other parties and stop being so against reforming FPTP. Lots of people feel politically homeless and don't want to vote for the "Uniparty."

No politican at the moment seems to inspire any confidence or have a real vision and plan for things like Social Care that will take more than 1 government cycle to sort out. It just seems to be about saying the right things to get elected and then not delivering on them or dealing with big, difficult things that need funding and sorting ( such as the NHS, MH, pressures on our infastructures ). Anything tricky - Announce a public enquiry or consultation and kick the can well down the road.

Really? Tell that to the Chinese.

Endlesssummer2022 · 27/08/2022 09:26

‘The next general election isn’t until 2025, why do people think that we will have a new government before then?’

I actually think she may call a GE this November. This way she will benefit from the ‘new leader bounce’ plus it won’t be cold enough yet for people to see the winter energy prices plus inflation still wouldn’t have peaked. She then gets 5 long years to finish off the ERG wish list and complete the transfer of taxpayers cash to rich donors. If she waits until later the honeymoon shine will have gone and we will be in the depths of a recession.

To the PP who said the Tory party vote is ‘aspirational’. I think that time has passed. When it was led by Thatcher, the city types etc would champion her. Also others who were on the up and up. Now its starting to be seen as a vote for the spiteful or those with nothing to lose who want to pull others down with them. That is not aspirational.

I kind of disagree. David Cameron appealed to the aspirational type. The "work hard and get rewarded" message really cut through with the working class and it still does. At least this is what I have observed in my job and I work with very low paid people.
Of course it's a complete con and Tories couldn't care less about the lowest paid in our society. I blame the right wing media for a lot of the brainwashing.

Alexandra2001 · 27/08/2022 12:57

entropynow · 27/08/2022 11:53

Really? Tell that to the Chinese.

China is a fascist dictatorship, far removed from Communist ideals.

But these sorts of posts are really funny, we all want to be the "aspirational, right wing, stand on your own two feet" types

BUT the moment it looks like we can't actually do any of that, we rush for lefty socialist policies.. like "State Aid, Cheaper rail fares, Free healthcare, Bail out the Banks, Pay us all Furlough" and now "Please Mr Government, Will you pay my Electricity bill?

Make your minds up.

NotABeliever · 27/08/2022 13:05

@Endlesssummer2022 by the way, I do agree with the first part of your post. It's quite clever analysis actually, calling a GE this autumn although I don't think they'll be brave enough to go for it.

Blossomtoes · 27/08/2022 13:46

I don't think the Energy Crisis is a good policy to base an Election on

It doesn’t matter what you think. The next election will be based on the economy. Remember “It’s the economy, stupid”? People who can’t pay their bills, heat their homes or feed their kids will vote for the party with policies that will make their lives better. On the showing of the last 12 years, that’s definitely not the Tories.
