To think that Liz Truss as PM will mean a Labour government?

I am no fan of this so-called Conservative government (thanks to Brexit and lockdowns, both of which I detest). So I suppose I'm a lifelong centre-ish Conservative with a desire not to have a bunch of loony lefties in control, but with no real political home at the moment.

Given a choice between Truss and Sunak, I would have to choose Sunak. I know, though, that it will end up with Truss as PM.

AIBU to think this will mean a Labour government and years in the political wilderness for the Conservative party?

I dont know how anyone with any kind of empathy or morals could vote for this current conservative party. Whoever is in charge of it. They have wrecked our public services and made us all demonstrably worse off.

Kerrrmieee · 26/08/2022 21:02

Tories out though, no matter what.

They got the working class vote because of Brexit.

That very soon disappeared.

honkeytonkwoman38 · 26/08/2022 21:05

Better a loony leftie than a tarnished Tory! Let's hope she wins and they really go down the pan!

They need to bring back Andy Burnham if they want to win I don't necessarily agree with him but i think he would stand a much better chance of winning an election than Keir Starmer

@x2boys Burnham is much more relatable to most ordinary people. I honestly think that’s a huge part of Labour’s problem. They’re basically all Guardian readers, culturally. And that’s automatically off putting to a hell of a lot of voters. It shouldn’t matter but it does.

Yep totally agree and I'm not really a labour supporter ,but I think he has a good chance of winning because he is relatable ,he's down to earth and that's what voters want .

Never fails to amaze me why Labour aren't doing better in the polls considering all the Tory fuck ups and deception then I realise why...

You couldn’t make it up, honestly. It’s so batshit.

You don't seem particularly well-informed if

a) you think the UK Labour party is a socialist party

and

b) you think the Tories will win the next general election after 14 years in power and overseeing the worst financial crisis in living memory.

Happy to meet you back on this thread in January 2025 to see who's right (or earlier than that of course if for some reason Truss calls a snap election.)

I realise by that you believe socialism should be to the left of Lenin.

Vargas · 26/08/2022 21:07

If Starmer can wrap his head around what a woman is then I will happily vote for his party. 12 years of lying, cheating Tories is way more than enough and I think both Truss and Sunak are doomed.

He’s also all fur coat and no knickers. He ran off to be Manchester Mayor to distance himself from Jeremy Corbyn after losing his bid for labour leader. He’s so transparently only does what benefits him.

PlanetNormal · 26/08/2022 21:10

Yes, I agree that Truss will be a gift to Labour. Whatever up you think of Johnson’s character & competence, there is no doubt that he is charismatic & funny. People like him. Truss has none of that. She is incredibly unlikeable, even for a Tory. If, as many expect, she combines this with incompetence it’s hard to see how she can win the next election.
Never underestimate the Tory party’s capacity for ruthlessness, though. If Truss thinks Trump-style exploiting of ‘culture war’ issues to divide communities and force people to pick sides will win her an election, that is what she will do. For example, she could leave the ECHR to allow her to deport illegal immigrants en masse to Rwanda without any of that pesky human rights stuff getting in her way. Or, she could repeal the Equality Act to exploit Trans issues as a wedge to divide Labour’s vote along the socially liberal vs socially conservative axis.

Loony lefties who don't know what a woman is!

And looney rightness who apparently know what a woman is and still treat them like shite. Nice try.

I do like the term all fur coat and no knickers ,but I can't really see anyone else at the moment who would make people actively vote for Labour,I'm not really a Labour supporter but I can see he something about him that makes people listen to him

Bollindger · 26/08/2022 21:14

But Labour have no poll appeal to the voting public.
Cornyn got the students backing him on social media, he had star appeal and mobilized the voters, just like Blair, people could hitch their wagon to the cause.
So can you tell me just what Labour can use as a cause, because for the life of me I have no idea what they would write on the side of a bus.

It's not fair, mummy says it is our turn next!!!!!!!

‘Kier Starmer has never cheated on his wife while she was battling cancer’ - done.

SizzlerFizzler · 26/08/2022 21:17

'Labour have no poll appeal to the voting public'...and yet all polling states the opposite.

🤣🤣 He is awful.

It's so depressing that even in a hypothetical situation people can't come up with the name of a single politician who wouldn't be laughable as a PM.

Doyoumind · 26/08/2022 21:20

Yabu. We've had years of shit Tory government and people still keep supporting them. I can't see it changing any time soon. I'm a Labour voter but even I wouldn't vote for them as things stand.

Maybe not but people vote for who they think will make a better PM they are not really interested in politicians private lives

goingback · 26/08/2022 21:21

think the tories will be happy to be in opposition while a Labour Gvt tries in vain to put a plaster over the deep wounds in the economy, health service, etc

Who would you vote for?

Thebestwaytoscareatory · 26/08/2022 21:21

The one silver lining of this cluster fuck the inept, corrupt, self-centrer, government have landed us with is that it will make the Tories unelectable for decades to come.

Their core boot lickers who keep them in power are on their way out anyway, many won't survive the next two winters (literally a bunch of turkeys voting for Christmas) and those that do make it through will surely to fuck not vote for them again, so come 2024 they'll have no way to cling to power.

Once we've seen the back of them we can maybe start to fix the shithole of a country/economy they've left us.

Nat6999 · 26/08/2022 21:23

With a bit of luck she will bottle the energy price cap problems & call a General Election, be the shortest reign of a PM.

blackpearwhitelilies · 26/08/2022 21:25

God, I hope so.

You are probably right, OP

I do support the Conservative Party in principle, but think that their current state is just a mess. Maybe it wouldn’t be too bad if Labour won the next election. It would give the Tories the chance to review their policies and Labour to try theirs.

It’s certainly an interesting prospect.
