This thread is triggered from all the recent press about the Cambridges & Lambrook press.. Basically the press are harping on about the time spent outdoors etc, surely parents can do this for free etc.. Out of interest how can a motivated parent who can't afford private school emulate a private school education? Please be kind!

That I'm aware of, there's no really robust empirical evidence on this question which really conclusively nails this question down, properly controlling for all the relevant variables. If it was a properly real thing then the proportion of single sex schools would be both large and increasing, rather than small and decreasing.

e.g. just eyeballing this table here, it's clear that fee levels and especially entrance requirements are overwhelmingly better predictors of results than whether a school is single or mixed etc sex.

Entry requirements definitely. I don't think there's much difference between Henrietta Barnett or SPG or Habs Girls because the entry requirements at those schools are so insanely high, only the top girls will ever get in. The same with QE Boys and St Pauls for boys. The competition is even greater for entry at the state schools.

Out state school dc has the same

Thankfully skiing type stuff and extra curricular is irrelevant compared to super curricular as they call it

Ds has done a fair few placements related to his preferred degree. It should be very helpful in closing the gap where very expensive hobbies mattered

DH and I can tutor all subjects apart from French which DS gave up after GCSE anyway. We are all in to sport and hiking and all very competitive personality wise. DS went to cadets and we travelled extensively. I am Chinese and culturally though I am not as harsh as my parents DS did have watered down Asian parenting which was stricter than his friends.

DS got really excellent work placements including the research and development office of a global food company. He was not allowed in one meeting because they were about to launch a new product, he still jokes when he sees it in shops. My brother offered him a placement at the big pharma company he was assistant CEO of but it meant a trip to America in term time so he didn’t take it up. Some degree of success can be down to contacts.

Ultimately the raw material can not be changed it can only be encouraged.
