We Must Endure High Bills. Proud

AIBU to be proud of Boris Johnstone-in this matter-when said, while visiting Ukraine on their Independence Day, that we must endure high bills as remember that Ukraine are paying in blood.

I was worried about the soaring cost of bills-power/food but this made me stop and pause.

Aibu to think that we should all write down what he said and put it on the fridge to remind ourselves that it will be worth it. We're doing it for Ukraine and it is worse for them.

hashtag. Proud to Pay for Ukraine

The piss take us not whether it's real or not (I'm sure it is, sounds exactly like something BJ would say to get himself out of the firing line there's no depths he wouldn't stoop to) rather that you think we should be proud of having to pay so much money. On the one hand yes I can accept that the war in Ukraine will affect prices. On the other hand many people are looking at energy bills which will be the same or more than their rent or mortgage payments!

Why should we be proud when we know how much profit is being made?

I'd find it easier to cope with if a large percentage of that profit was being reinvested into renewable energy sources rather than filling peoples pockets!

balalake · 26/08/2022 08:21

We can support Ukraine and have reasonable energy bills. We should do both.

MiauzenKatzenjammer · 26/08/2022 08:22

Hope you enjoy Year 3 sweetie.

Cactuslove · 26/08/2022 08:22

BoJo is using Ukraine to justify his Government's absolute lack of action and care. He knows that as a Nation we will want to support Ukriane. He poses this as an ethical dilemma, support Ukraine at our own expense. But this is a false narrative designed so the Government can avoid taking any action against the emergy companies for example.

So to answer your question- no I'm not proud. I'm not proud of a Government's inaction. I'm not proud of a Government who has failed to understand or predict the blood the UK citizens will pay with. I am not proud of a Govrrnment who sows division amongst us as a smoke screen for their utter failings over a 12 yr period.

Still hoping you're being sarcastic.

Endlesslypatient82 · 26/08/2022 08:23

Op I’m curious - what is your set up? Children? Income? Etc

SarahProblem · 26/08/2022 08:23

We must endure shit posts like this. Period.

RausageSoul · 26/08/2022 08:24

Yet in my twitter feed West Ham want to pay £33m for a footballer.

ohholyday · 26/08/2022 08:27

exactly this @Cactuslove and it highlights even more what a morally empty waste of space Boris is too and what a morally empty government he has lead. It’s not going to get better either under Truss

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 26/08/2022 08:28

It would absolutely make me proud or atleast I'd be relatively happy to take the financial hit and discomfort as a healthy adult who can cover up with blankets and jumpers if the fat cats weren't getting fatter whilst we were all struggling. If the leadership of the country (not that we currently have any) was living and leading be example. When Eleanor Roosevelt was first lady she refused to wear expensive clothing because the people in the US were struggling. Our PM is swanning off on his holidays and people who are not healthy adults are going to suffer and likely die. Children in schools are going to be cold as schools won't be able to put the heating on, performance will decline because you cant work properly when cold and we are still trying to catch up from Covid. Many of my students already only have one hot meal a day some of them are really, really going to suffer.

WatermelonSugarSigh · 26/08/2022 08:30

Actually Miss Havisham is appropriate as this vile government have spent their 12 years in power dragging us ever closer to Dickensian times

SilverGlitterBaubles · 26/08/2022 08:31

Proud no, alarmed, angry, fed up absolutely yes. Why is it that we have to shoulder the highest price rises in Europe despite not being as reliant on Russian gas? Why is it that the profits of these companies are soaring and they are not being asks to use the profits to shoulder any of this burden 'to support Ukraine'? Why is it France capped rises at 4% while we are told to suck it up. This government is abhorrent, callous and irresponsible and I am just dreading what the winter will bring for people.

Despairingof · 26/08/2022 08:32

I’m ashamed to live in a country that chose to elect the tories and Boris.

Bouledeneige · 26/08/2022 08:32

No it doesn't make me proud. The government is failing to protect its people and needs to take measures to reduce our bills - too many will suffer and go under - famillies, pensioners, small businesses. I'm not proud of a country that will allow its people to shiver and starve - god knows how many will get on if flu and covid take off too - we've got ambulances queuing outside hospitals now, no GP access to be had and many pharmacies on the brink of collapse. The government have known about price rises since last autumn and done nothing. The country is going to shit.

HelloThereObiWan · 26/08/2022 08:33

Germany are far more dependent on Russian oil than we are and their bills only rose by 23%.

Energy firms in this country started collapsing in October 2021, several months before Russia invaded Ukraine.

BP have made billions, not millions, BILLIONS in profit from North Sea Gas.

Let's stop pretending this is all about Ukraine. It isn't. It's about shareholders dividends and CEO pay coming before the need of Joe Public being able to afford to live comfortably in Tory Britain.

Surely no one is this deluded? or simps this hard to such a gross self centred individual who would throw them under the bus for a twin?

the energy companies are making record profits to support Ukraine then?

This.

I might be proud if I believed it, but unfortunately I think it's just propaganda. Energy prices were rising before the war started.

The OP isn't - this is a troll thread.

How strangely posts like this, recommending anti-Ukraine hashtags are popping up on all social media in the last few days. Almost if by a command. Can't be, surely.
Yep, let's blame Ukraine for everything. Stupid fuckers, wanting to live.

Youaremysunshine14 · 26/08/2022 08:37

Goady much? Read the room, FFS. Of course people still support Ukraine but you've posted this because really you are a troll with nothing better to do than upset people moments after the price cap has been announced and people are genuinely scared about how they are going to manage their bills. Hope you're bloody proud of yourself, moron.

MissHavershamJoinsTinder · 26/08/2022 08:37

@SleeplessInEngland

You disagree. Fine. This is AIBU but don't make stupid accusations.
