We Must Endure High Bills. Proud

MissHavershamJoinsTinder · 26/08/2022 07:45

AIBU to be proud of Boris Johnstone-in this matter-when said, while visiting Ukraine on their Independence Day, that we must endure high bills as remember that Ukraine are paying in blood.

I was worried about the soaring cost of bills-power/food but this made me stop and pause.

Aibu to think that we should all write down what he said and put it on the fridge to remind ourselves that it will be worth it. We're doing it for Ukraine and it is worse for them.

hashtag. Proud to Pay for Ukraine

I was consumed with rage when he said that. How dare he?

We are not dependent on Russia for gas , and if the tories under Thatcher had not sold off our energy, on which we are now dependent on French and other European owners of our energy companies, we wouldn’t be in this situation.

How fucking dare he? He doesn’t pay to heat no 10 and chequers.

I fully support Ukraine.

Johnson’s was an I’ll/judged stupid counter productive cheap shot.

Furries · 26/08/2022 08:57

I can’t be arsed to compose a rational response of my own, so I’ll go with an easier one instead.

Fuck off you shit-stirring cunt of a bot, sat in some manky room coming up with “ingenious”ways to try to spread discord.

And, if you’re not a bot and are actually really like this, then fuck off even further.

Now, I know it’s early, but I have cake, wine, coffee and gin if anyone would like some.

Save me a gin please?

Louise0701 · 26/08/2022 09:09

@Novum that isn’t what I said. What I said was, with reference to the apparent quote from Boris “no more lockdowns, let the bodies pile high” is that many of us said no more lockdowns and agreed that economy was more important than health, in that moment.
it’s only because it’s apparently been said by Boris that everyone is frothing at the mouth about it.

GoneWithTheWine1 · 26/08/2022 09:10

Why do we continue to pay for a war that isn't ours? Ukraine and Russia have been fighting for years. This isn't a new thing like they make to make out.

We need to stop immediately.

flowertoday · 26/08/2022 09:10

Standing alongside Ukraine is a separate issue from the government's lack of investment in clean energy and complete unwillingness to challenge soaring energy company profits. People in this country will also 'pay in blood' - think suicide, homelessness, domestic violence etc linked to acute ecomomic stress.
Nice try though - kind of Boris to offer some rousing words to the masses on his way out. Whilst we anticipate which one of those tory idiots come next 🙄

countrygirl99 · 26/08/2022 09:10

Are you proud that an old man with fractures has to wait overnight on the ground because people in Yemen are dying in the civil war? Or that we have so many reliant on food banks when others are starving in drought induced famines?

Hiphopopotamus · 26/08/2022 09:11

You fecking idiot 🙄

Bluebellsunderthetrees · 26/08/2022 09:11

Rising bills are to do with the Ukraine war. Statement from UN if you don't believe it and not just the UK - poorer countries where people will die and maybe more wars will erupt. Our Govt and the US quickly shifted from negotiation with Russia to continued destruction and war compare that to the abandoning of Afghanistan where people are also now starving to death. I don't support any of this. unctad.org/ukraine-in-focus
" Soaring food and fuel prices will affect the most vulnerable in developing countries, putting pressure on the poorest households which spend the highest share on their income on food, resulting in hardship and hunger. This is cause for great concern, as social and political stability and increasing food prices are highly correlated.
Countries, already under severe pressure due to the costs of the pandemic, will see disruption in trade, deficits widen and investment contract. Additionally, significant increase in oil and gas prices can shift investment back into fossil-fuel-based energy generation, which risks reversing the trend towards renewables at a time of acute climate crisis."

HesterShaw1 · 26/08/2022 09:12

Oh ffs do some research.

It's very little to do with Ukraine and a lot to do with oil companies limiting supply after the pandemic and charging us a fortune. They have us over a barrel. I'm not proud for lining their pockets, no

And why is no one questioning the £400 "help" which is coming from taxpayers' i.e OUR money? And going straight back to the oil companies.

Sirius3030 · 26/08/2022 09:13

It’s great that poor people will be supporting Ukraine most. Go do it, poor people! I’m proud of you.

We don’t want it to become our war, or hot one anyway, it’s already war by proxy. Risky and presumably heads of NATO are aware of risks - the west is not doing it altruistically

Goatling · 26/08/2022 09:14

OP will you still be proud when children are going to bed crying with hunger and pensioners are freezing to death?

Chevyimpala67 · 26/08/2022 09:15

The price hikes pre date the war. But nice try bot op!

The fuel companies could reduce prices but why would they? They are raking in trillions. CEOs getting millions in bonuses. Shareholders happy.

And they are - of course - huge tory party donors.

<nothing to see here....just keep paying>

France and Ireland have both set caps it can be done if there is the political will.

5128gap · 26/08/2022 09:15

You're so right OP! Truly inspirational. I hope you don't mind, but I've taken the concept a little further and made a note for my own fridge.
'You might be bare and empty, as my money has all gone.
But somewhere there's a Tory saying I'm the lucky one.
I'll stiffen up my upper lip and never will complain and Boris will be proud of me, and toast me in Champagne!'
Please feel free to use my words OP if they bring you further comfort.

Laiste · 26/08/2022 09:16

So the hidden message is that inciting anger about the energy prices means you must be happy for children in Ukraine to die.

It's just like the bloody clap for the NHS guilt tripping shite.

Pitch the common folk against each other and step back and watch them fight while they ignore the real issue.

anonanonanon123 · 26/08/2022 09:17

No I think he should have used the 54million for us.

Emotionalsupportviper · 26/08/2022 09:17

You are joking, right?

This corrupt, narcissistic, grifter, who gets his bills paid by the country (as do other MPS) will not be remotely affected by these increases and will be able to use full as profligately as he wishes (and I don't doubt he will).

The govt should be looking at a much lower cap on energy companies with make obscene profits - even before energy prices went up they were paying massive dividends and millions in bonuses, and these haven't been affected because we are absorbing all of the increase.

Emotionalsupportviper · 26/08/2022 09:18

<wipes away patriotic tear>

Just beautiful!

No I think he should have used the 54million for us.

That’s just one of many top ups. So far it’s been £4 billion this year alone.

MulberryMoon · 26/08/2022 09:19

I believe other European countries will be paying lower bills than us, so rather than being proud I'm ashamed of the government

Discovereads · 26/08/2022 09:20

Applesonthelawn · 26/08/2022 09:04

Have this conversation in Germany where the impact is greater and the lack of will to support Ukraine will falter. When the EU suggests Ukraine gives up Crimea/Donbas etc. just so they can get their cheaper gas, that's when the debate will heat up. Here and now, it's irrelevant because UK support for Ukraine shows no signs whatsoever of weakening.

? Russia annexed the Crimea in 2014. There’s nothing to debate.

anonanonanon123 · 26/08/2022 09:17

No I think he should have used the 54million for us.

This is 81p per head of population. Show me the evidence that you are a net fiscal contributor to this money (which is what now, around £40K salary) and I promise to send you your 81p back.

Discovereads · 26/08/2022 09:21

MulberryMoon · 26/08/2022 09:19

They are. My energy company is EDF, French owned and the prices I am pay are 3x the prices their French customers pay per KWH of gas or electricity.

Zonder · 26/08/2022 09:22

Is it wrong to agree because Boris said it or wrong to agree because you don't think we should support Ukraine by enduring high bills while they pay in blood.

It's wrong because what we are actually paying for is high profits in the pockets of the energy shareholders.

Soubriquet · 26/08/2022 09:22

Oh yes. The British public must suffer in winter with not being allowed heat, or being able to eat enough because Ukraine have it worse.

Totally agree
