We Must Endure High Bills. Proud

MissHavershamJoinsTinder · 26/08/2022 07:45

AIBU to be proud of Boris Johnstone-in this matter-when said, while visiting Ukraine on their Independence Day, that we must endure high bills as remember that Ukraine are paying in blood.

I was worried about the soaring cost of bills-power/food but this made me stop and pause.

Aibu to think that we should all write down what he said and put it on the fridge to remind ourselves that it will be worth it. We're doing it for Ukraine and it is worse for them.

I don't want to pay for Ukraine.

I'd rather Russia has it and we have a better life.

Interesting.

Would you have said that about Belgium, or France, 80 years ago? I think we did say it about Poland.

Marina Hyde today, suggested we reframe the term 'cost of living', to 'price of existing'. I think she's got a point.

This is first class work from you OP. Trolling or not - I’m not offering an opinion, but I absolutely love your posting style. No-nonsense stuff.

It really isn’t to do with Ukraine imho - it’s just the result of years of malinvestment and hideous global monetary policy coming to its inevitable end, but that’s just my opinion.

the80sweregreat · 26/08/2022 15:02

The callers on lbc radio today are all furious , rightly so.
It's true, we're being mugged off and we're letting them do it.

I'm going for 60s, wealthy partner, SAHM but now children grown up so looks after the home, giving plenty of time to exonomise by making her own wine and jam and a blanket to 'snuggle' in when the thermostat goes down a notch.
Looks back nostalgically at the time when she 'struggled' when young. Had to have her mothers old sofa because they couldn't afford new like they seem to have to have these days. Orange crates for side tables and bare lino in the spare room while hubby took six extra jobs so they could save up. It was character forming and they were grateful.

@5128gap That’s very specific and to be honest sounds about right 😂 I can just imagine the sort of person they are.

On reflection, I think I may be mixing the OP up with my ex MIL. Which tbf, would be easily done.😁

You are not wrong @MissHavershamJoinsTinder

In fact if we can push energy bills in the UK as high as possible coupled with inflation and the cost of greed crisis then we might finally manage to solve the bigger problem which is people the channel in small boats how very dare they. If they can't even afford the cost of a flight like normal people how can they expect to stay warm?

Anyway with all the wokey people going on about global warming, if it really was warming people wouldn't need to pay for fuel anyway.

But a refusal to respond d to questions re the OP’s situation insofar as income and whether she has any dependent children.

What are your "various sound reasons" for disagreeing @Thedogscollar

Do you think we should stop helping Ukraine because it means hardship?

Why are you so, so, so naïve OP? Do you really think people suffering very harshly to the point of not being able to eat makes war worth it? You really aren't convincing anyone who doesn't share your view. Please give up. There is no logic in what you are saying.

If you want to be proud of yourself for enduring hardship for Ukraine, then go for it. I very much doubt that you are enduring any though, judging by your sneering and smug responses. Please don't be so patronising and out of touch for everyone else. It comes across as trolling. It is upto each individual how they feel about this. My personal view is we should not meddle with other countries affairs as it never ends well. We should just concentrate on supporting those who are misplaced (which costs far less money than weapons and sanctions evidently).

Anyone who claims they're proud of "Boris" is either his doting, demented mother or has so tenuous a grasp on reality as to make their points entirely redundant.

His mum’s dead.

He's been on holiday for the last 3 years

Surely it's longer than 3 years even? Has he ever properly worked? Putting on a high viz and destroying everything doesn't count.

the80sweregreat · 26/08/2022 16:41

To be fair my own parents had orange boxes as tables and had to live with relatives before being offered a council flat when she fell pregnant with my older brother . This was just after world war two and many people were in the same boat.
It doesn't mean we should be going back to those days , but I remember my own mum being a bit jealous we could afford a second hand sofa when we first got married! We had it for years , then my mils old one after that, so we were hardly rolling in it ourselves ( very early 90s)
I had hoped people might have a much better standard of living than this in 2022 , but seems it's going back to this and it's not good :(
At least we could afford the fuel bills though and we didn't have it easy for years.

Softplayhooray · 26/08/2022 16:50

Alright Carrie, calm down...noone is stupid enough to swallow life ruining Energy bills (that other governments cap so their electorate does not die during winter) by throwing out a lazy 'war effort' trope.

I think this is a good point, but I do think people forget that some years ago people might have had crates for tables and a second hand sofa, but they were able to move out of the home at a much younger age then. Lots of kids now can't even get their own place, which is sad. I don't know anyone who has moved out of the home at 20 and furnished their place with new stuff.

the80sweregreat · 26/08/2022 16:53

I know;(
My own children can't buy a property yet
One is renting with his friend and his bills have gone up.
I worry about them, it's shit for the young people

Blossomtoes · 26/08/2022 16:54

This. I left home when I was 17 into a furnished flat - anyone else remember those? They were the norm in rentals in those days.

@Notlosinganyweight naive? Surely everyone knows that suffering makes us all closer to god, which is a good thing. It is one of the reasons Mother Teresa's charities had so much money that they were not prepared to spend.

the80sweregreat · 26/08/2022 16:58

Ds2's flat is partly furnished : beds and a sofa etc
I was surprised how much they had to be honest. They have to look after it all , but it did save him a fortune buying these things.

Yes same here, early 00's. It was still a lot to rent then, but at least we didn't have inflation and high energy costs to deal with and we didn't have to furnish the place. We still had second hand pots and pans and furnishings that weren't included.

I just hope this shit gets sorted for my own kids when they are older.

Christ on a bike, do people actually think there is even a small possiblilty of this??

They don't have to "win" they only have to wear Russia down, just as they were worn down in Afghanistan.

Putin is riding high atm, that will not be the case in another 2 years, with 10s of '000s dead and no end in sight.

Ukraine, in many ways is a far worse situation for Russia to contend with.

Putins only hope is Trump (or similar far right loon) wins in 2 years time and stops weapon shipments.

poetryandwine · 26/08/2022 18:00

Another two years? For the people of Ukraine, firstly, and for all of us? Are you high?

poetryandwine · 26/08/2022 18:02

To continue -

I mean, I can see that it might be two years or more. But on what planet can anyone discuss this possibility so casually?
