We Must Endure High Bills. Proud

MissHavershamJoinsTinder · 26/08/2022 07:45

AIBU to be proud of Boris Johnstone-in this matter-when said, while visiting Ukraine on their Independence Day, that we must endure high bills as remember that Ukraine are paying in blood.

I was worried about the soaring cost of bills-power/food but this made me stop and pause.

Aibu to think that we should all write down what he said and put it on the fridge to remind ourselves that it will be worth it. We're doing it for Ukraine and it is worse for them.

Jesus OP are you really that thick. Ukraine are paying in blood so suck it up? In 2019 there were in excess of 8,500 deaths due to cold homes when the price cap was dropped to £1,179 to help avoid such a situation. The price cap is now more than 3 times this at £3,549. So by this time next year you will see just how much the vulnerable people of this country have paid in blood.

So nearly three times more people will die here from fuel poverty than have died in the war to date? Sounds about right.

bluebunny1 · 26/08/2022 09:41

Completely disagree with BJ. The reason why we now have huge energy bills is because for years UK government did not have a coherent energy infrastructure policy. Politicians only think short term. For example if 15 years we invested in nuclear & more large scale renewables, we wouldn't rely on global energy markets today to source our gas. We could keep price rises limited, like France does, and be more self-sufficient. But of course this would actually require politicians to think beyond their 5-year term in office. Sympathise with Ukraine of course, but our current situation could equally have been caused by political unrest in Qatar, Norway running out of gas or any number of international energy events. Until we have enough production of our own, we will be vulnerable.

I agree, and propose to start up a gofundme to buy him and cazzers some new wallpaper. He's a hard-working committed individual who has lead this country with dignity.

I agree, when I saw that photo of him bare chested in Greece last week my heart soared with pride that out of 50,000,000 or so eligible citizens we had chosen this titan of physical and intellectual ability to represent our nation.

(stands for national anthem, hand on heart, wipes tears from eyes, wishes I had a gold medal for something, anything, around my neck)

That’s just one of many top ups. So far it’s been £4 billion this year alone.

Has someone has said, that is just 81p per person.
America has paid more

Because no-one will buy power from Russia in order to support Ukraine.
This means that there is less power to go around so prices rise.

That's how it helps Ukraine who are-you might have noticed-fighting Russia and paying in blood.

or - there is less gas to go around, so perhaps the generators could not royally screw people over - the same countries and suppliers that they'll wnat to supply when prices go back down again. Or countries could band together to block-buy at a max rate and refuse to pay more.

We shouldn't be 'free market' at this point

Just because somewhere else is colder it doesn't mean a UK winter with no heating isn't shit. And, for some people, potentially deadly.

Please answer op as it’s relevant

do you have children??
what is your income??

Why are people blaming the Tories?

As if Labour would have done anything differently in the last 2 years?

Because the Tories are in power. Pretty difficult to blame the opposition, even for the most ardent Boris arse-licker!

Oldtiredfedup · 26/08/2022 09:47

I’m at a loss here OP

coukd you please explain how families already in poverty experiencing a nose dive in their health and ability to function whilst energy bosses experience continuing profits this Winter helps the Ukraine in any way?

Thedungeondragon · 26/08/2022 09:48

It would be a lot more impressive if when Boris said "We" he actually included himself or his wealthy cronies. What he actually means is that us plebs should be proud to endure hardship, while he and his friends continue to make as much money as possible.

Adventur3time · 26/08/2022 09:48

I agree with you OP. I don't feel proud, because there probably is more that the government could be doing and lot of this is down to other issues. But if it's the only way to support the Ukraine then I'm willing to take the hit and endure a poorer quality of life for a while.

Apparently it's not enough that we're all going to freeze and starve - and many will actually die from this - all while energy producers rake in billions upon billions in increased profits (which are already finding indirect ways into Russia's bank account so not actually cutting them off at all).

We have to feel proud while it happens.

MulberryMoon · 26/08/2022 09:51

Discovereads · 26/08/2022 09:21

They are. My energy company is EDF, French owned and the prices I am pay are 3x the prices their French customers pay per KWH of gas or electricity.

I'm not proud of paying 3 X what the French are no OP.

JennyForeigner · 26/08/2022 09:52

@discoverreads Genuinely interested to hear that. At risk of sounding stupid where does the correlation OP and others are drawing come from then?

Is it that we are being hit by buyers from the continent having to pay more for wholesale nd the markets being interconnected?

Discovereads · 26/08/2022 09:52

MissHavershamJoinsTinder · 26/08/2022 09:44

Has someone has said, that is just 81p per person.
America has paid more

£54 million is 81p per person. £4 bn is £160 per household.

And so what if the US has given more? They’re the same size as the entire EU.
We are the size of only 2 out of the 50 US states in population- Texas and California but so tiny, our entire land mass would fit inside Texas and California four times over!

Christmasiscominghohoho · 26/08/2022 09:53

Fuck Ukraine.
People in the UK will freeze and die this winter as well.

IndigoC · 26/08/2022 09:54

We have the highest increases by far of any country in Europe (by some margin). Is there a reason the British public should suffer so much more than anywhere else for the Ukraine?

ohholyday · 26/08/2022 09:55

FlatWhiteExtraHot · 26/08/2022 09:47

Because the Tories are in power. Pretty difficult to blame the opposition, even for the most ardent Boris arse-licker!

Labour didn't oppose any of the lockdown measures. In fact, they wanted stronger measures.

What do you think they'd do differently about the energy crisis we're in now?

Hint: Remember how Tony Blair forged documents as a justification to invade Iraq??

56’ N vs 61’ N isn’t that great a difference between Scotland and Siberia. Both get the polar weather systems direct from the North Pole.

It wouldn't matter if we were the Saudi Arabia of Gas production & had a nuclear power station in every city in the UK - if its in the hands of private companies.

UK produces, across the year, 50% of gas needs and 17% of electricity via renewables... and suppliers buy it to sell to us, at global market prices.
