We Must Endure High Bills. Proud

MissHavershamJoinsTinder · 26/08/2022 07:45

AIBU to be proud of Boris Johnstone-in this matter-when said, while visiting Ukraine on their Independence Day, that we must endure high bills as remember that Ukraine are paying in blood.

I was worried about the soaring cost of bills-power/food but this made me stop and pause.

Aibu to think that we should all write down what he said and put it on the fridge to remind ourselves that it will be worth it. We're doing it for Ukraine and it is worse for them.

hashtag. Proud to Pay for Ukraine

For the hard of thinking at the back of the room: [blah blah blah]

Honestly, as trolling attempts go I can't fault your effort. Lots of posts, and not short ones either!

Bingo! There we have a tick for one of the gormless responses I expected.

For the hard of thinking at the back of the room:

I am proud that, as a country, we are prepared to endure hardship, in order to help Ukraine win a war against Russia.
I am also proud that we are sending weapons to help her.
I am proud that we can see images-like the ones shown on the BBC website today-that show Russia burning gas in order to 'punish' us and say we don't care.
I am proud that we are not demanding that we stop helping Ukraine in order to save ourselves hardship.

We are helping Ukraine and it will cost. That's a fact.

It is possible to disagree by saying:
we shouldn't be helping her, when it will be hard for us
we shouldn't be proud of the fact we're helping because it smacks of self-congratulation when Ukraine are paying in blood-even though Ukraine have given a medal to our PM for saying we will endure hardship for as long as they endure bloodshed.
it's good that we are helping and prepared to personally pay but oil companies should be paying extra too

Responses I expect from the hard of thinking:

  1. You're probably a multi-millionaire (because no-one but a rich person could agree with putting up with hardship to help Ukraine.)
  2. You are a troll (cheap insult from the dense)
  3. You are proud that people will die here (just plain stupid and deliberately mis-understanding or maybe genuinely misunderstanding, who knows!)
  4. Fucks and Blinds (from the professional splutterers and a good measure of them from others who, sadly, only know how to show disagreement in that way.)
  5. It is nothing to do with Ukraine (from those who don't read-or understand-the news)

Your going to need another shovel for that hole you're digging.

You've got your response, the vast majority disagree with you for various sound reasons. You are either being deliberately obtuse in not understanding them or just wanting an arguement.

You’d think the UK was Siberia the way some mumsnetters seem to view our winters

They are cold enough for people to freeze to death in. A permafrost isn't required for mortality.

Without heating homes will not only be cold, they will become damp. Vulnerable people - the elderly, children, people with many disability will become very ill - many of them long term.

Homes will deteriorate - the fabric of the buildings will be damaged - which will lead to further problems.

People will literally be sitting in the dark if they can't pay the bills: no telly, no radio, can't read, do a jigsaw, play board games, fill a hot water bottle. Kids won't be able to do homework - but that doesn't matter because many schools are seriously considering closing for at least some of the winter months to save on energy bills. Those children whose parents still have to go out to work will be left to God and good neighbours much of the time - how many will have accidents, perhaps lighting candles for light/warmth? How many will be lured into the homes of predators with the promise of a hot meal and a TV programme? How many will simply suffer, and this vile govt doesn't give a bugger?

MissHavershamJoinsTinder · 26/08/2022 13:24

What are your "various sound reasons" for disagreeing @Thedogscollar

Do you think we should stop helping Ukraine because it means hardship?

I did think it sarcasm initially but the thread expressed a different way may have got a different response

People may not have agreed with these points but it may not have been so full on

FFS!
Look it up before you imply I've made it up.
Google his name+Ukraine+price rise+endure.
It was covered everywhere from ITV to Daily Telegraph.

Then, when you read it for yourselves drop the "piss-taking" comments and say if it makes you proud-will bring some comfort of not.

For me, it makes me proud and will bring some comfort. AIBU

I suspect you have enough money to suck up the higher prices. If this is the case you're a massive dick.

Windfall tax would be a large element.

Could also get the Fraud Squad in to look to the missing PPE and Track and Trace billions.

poetryandwine · 26/08/2022 13:34

OP,

A few people have called you a troll but many of us have taken you seriously and given you reasoned replies. So I don’t disagree with point (2) of your latest reply. I also don’t love people trying to guess your personal circs, although you show such a lack of empathy that I understand the temptation.

But (3), (4) and (5) completely fail to engage with the reasoned arguments people have made with your original post. They are both over egged and off point. Can you offer us a higher quality response?

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 26/08/2022 13:41

cooliebrown · 26/08/2022 13:47

Bluebellsunderthetrees · 26/08/2022 12:14

You need to read a little more about Russia, Saudi, Iran, UAE and Opec if you think there is no link between our response to Ukraine and as to why the oil and gas companies can make such huge profits just now.

I'm not saying there is no link between rising prices and the situation in Ukraine, that situation is undoubtedly a factor. However, oil and gas companies are taking huge profits, resulting in ridiculous costs here. The French have managed to cap their fuel price increase to 4%, yet continue to support Ukraine.

Notlosinganyweight · 26/08/2022 13:48

Is this one of those bot threads testing public opinion?

Or are you just one of those virtue signalling Waitrose women?

MissHavershamJoinsTinder · 26/08/2022 13:49

My point 3 was a direct response to someone who actually declared that I would be proud that people died. Of course, that poster does seem a little hysterical but plenty have been in the same vein without the direct accusation. In fact, @Emotionalsupportviper -on this very page is an example of this.

My point 4 was addressed to those who have littered their replies with foul language. Quite often, there has been no point to make except name hurling.

My point 5 was to those who have declared that rising prices are simply down to the government and nothing to do with the war. Yes, that is bizarre but that is what they think. Up thread...someone even referred to it as a conspiracy to kill poor people and nothing to do withe the war.

These are not @poetryandwine reasoned arguments.

In fact, I predicted the responses there would be to my fuller post and, as sure as hell's a mousetrap, 2 of them have instantly appeared- accusations of being a troll and that I must be super rich.

It really is impossible to argue with density on that level, although I have appreciated the points about France's cap.

You've had 10 pages of people varyingly saying your suggestion we be proud of the situation and use it galvanise us through a miserable winter is absolute horseshit.

If you made this thread to sincerely guage opinon, you've had your answer and would concede it's a minority (of one) view.

But you didn't, so you haven't. 😃

lightand · 26/08/2022 13:56

Are you Ms Melinda Simmons? British ambassador to the Ukraine?

poetryandwine · 26/08/2022 13:57

Okay, I have been focusing on the better responses. The trash talk is wrong and silly.

How do you respond to the fact that we have the most poorly regulated energy sector in Europe, and energy company after energy company is taking massive, record profits? These facts are matters of public record.

Many responders including me believe that these points have a lot to do with why our crisis is so awful.

Bettysnow · 26/08/2022 14:07

I doubt very much people who are struggling because of the hardship will feel a sense of pride when they look at their children who are cold and hungry.
They will feel fear and despair as they are unable to provide for them.
Watching your family family suffer and feeling helpless will put a huge strain on any parents mental health and drive them into the darkest place imaginable!
The fact that idiot even said such a thing shows how totally disconnected from ordinary people he is. Im sure hes very proud considering he won't have to worry if his children will have full stomachs or are shaking from cold!

Clavinova · 26/08/2022 14:30

The French have managed to cap their fuel price increase to 4%, yet continue to support Ukraine.

Clearly not capped for everyone:

A French cement manufacturer was livid, and he was not the only one. "In 2021, our energy advisor recommended that we buy electricity at 80 euros per megawatt-hour for 2022. I didn't do it, thinking the price was too high. I was wrong. Today the spot price is 19 times higher than the regulated sum of 42 euros we would pay for traditional nuclear-based electricity. Now, at 800 euros per megawatt-hour, I am losing money,"

www.lemonde.fr/en/economy/article/2022/07/19/energy-crisis-french-businesses-brace-themselves-for-the-worst_5990714_19.html

Soaring energy prices have seen France's smaller communes forced to close swimming pools and meeting spaces and turn off street lamps as they struggle to pay the bills.
