To be told to come in when AL agreed and booked?

DH and I are going away (a couple hours away from our home) with our children and some of his family. We are away Friday - Monday at this location and likely home then on Monday afternoon / Tuesday if we don’t stay at MILs house on the way home.

My issue is that I booked these days off months ago (back in Feb / March) and it was approved by a team lead who is no longer in the department. A lady I jobshare with also asked to have one day that we both work together off (Tuesday, day after bank holiday Monday). This was approved by aforementioned team lead.

So, last Friday my manager says as I’m leaving work “there is no one in from your team on that Tuesday - can you come in?”. I said I was away but would see what I could do. I spoke with the lady I jobshare with (and who booked the day off after I did) and she won’t change her plans. She said she wasn’t doing anything during her leave (fair enough) but won’t come in (she has no DC and I have 3 just for reference).

Now I know that we both booked leave and had it approved - do you think I should make an effort to come in on the Tuesday even though it was agreed first that I could be off? Or should I just suck it up and come back early to work even though it will change our plans for our holiday?

Nothing against the lady I jobshare with but she knows I am away and refused to come in on this one day (again, fair enough) but I hate that I had to be the one who offers just to keep the management calm.

AIBU not to come in on the Tuesday, or should I be AINBU to not come in?

Would people really go down the legal route though?

I certainly have never heard of that.

I have heard of staff being contacted an informed that AL was approved in error as another member of staff is already approved to be off, and it will have to be rescinded.

I haven't heard of it the day before leave was being taken.

Bottom line is that the manager has messed up.

Up to her to fix it.
Not the OP or her colleague, at this very late stage.

Managers responsible to fix. Agreed.

So why the OP said “she would see what she would do”. And then opened up discussions with her colleague separate to the manager - was muddying the waters

@differential I completely agree that the colleague did nothing wrong, but also don’t get why you seem so upset. You are genuinely reacting like you’ve been personally insulted. Why?!

This.

colleague did nothing wrong.

you seem to have taken this very deeply and personally

Absolutely her reply implied a possible compromise.

Disaster.

Hopefully she has taken the advice and emailed her manager with the confirmation that she cannot change her plans.

Her manager is a CF to be asking a couple of days before she starts.

@Endlesslypatient82 I do consider it affecting me very deeply that a woman is being called a dick for no reason. Misogyny affects all women. I don't know what you think you're getting at by repeatedly saying I was 'aggressive' or 'taking it very deeply or personally' or 'personally upset'. I'm not this colleague, but even if I was, the colleague isn't in the wrong anyway. So no idea why she was called a dick by PP and no idea why you feel the need to keep attacking me about calling that out.

It was one poster

no one else had even remotely indicated they thought anything badly about the colleague whatsoever.

and yet you have tunnel visioned on it and spent considerable energy and time addressing the poster, who gives no hint to actually being bothered either way. Let it go. There’s no fight there!

"No it absolutely wouldn’t be relevant. And I am well aware that leave can be withdrawn and actually it can be legally withdrawn for any reason so long as there is sufficient notice. Who had leave approved first does not come into it."

I disagree. Who booked leave first is very relevant. And any decent employer who had the need to cancel someone's leave would absolutely look to see who had it booked and approved first.

As it was the fault of whoever approve two people in that department to be off at the same time. The second person to apply for holidays in that scenario should have had them refused as it left no cover. There was cover when the first person applied for holidays.

I've been in that situation very recently and it still annoys me that I lost mine despite I had mine in months before the other staff member. I followed the procedure 100% and it's caused bad feeling.

Yanbu
Of course you don't have to go in, you've booked AL and are away. As you work for nhs it will be on your HR record as booked AL

The fact that your job share collegiate booked a day off when she knew you were away and they agreed it , is an issue for the manager who agreed her day off

It wouldn't get past HR if they tried to complain about you!

Just go away and enjoy your holiday and next time reply
"I'm unable to help as I booked this AL last year and am away all week"

On occasion I have come in when on AL and at home if it made no difference to me, to cover sick leave or someone's attendance at a funeral, but it's my choice.

Nope, don't go in. This was approved and it is your personal time. If you go in they will think they can do this to you again.
