Have you watched this video by Neil Oliver

AIBU to start believing he actually has a valid point. I am not normally part of the tin foil hat brigade but I most definitely have been starting to question what's been going on recently

I'd be interested to hear other people views on this subject.

Thanks

We aren't

You however are

NotMyDust · 21/08/2022 07:52

@knittingaddict ooh do you think someone is posting this stuff on Mumsnet for a reason?

interesting.... although it's ironically that's
a bit conspiracy theory itself

Not really. Conspiracy stuff is disseminating into mainstream culture more and more. You only have to look at the number of people agreeing with the op on a popular forum on mn.

The last few Fridays near Gloucester there have been a small group of middle aged men flying banners about the plandemic and other CS stuff. People naturally flock together with others who are like minded. You would think they had better things to do with their time, but maybe not.

I worry more that recent posts like this mean that CS are gaining traction. That is truly terrifying. People banding together to post is a mild irritation, if it's even happening.

So what does he want? It’s a fairly inarticulate and confused rant against the rich and celebrities, which I don’t disagree with, and he appears to be pro-Trump, which I do. But he also says that green technology isn’t green, anyway and simultaneously berates the hated rich for not using it enough. Modern Landless Peasants resent the Landed Gentry. I object to any emotive pleas that I should ‘wake up’ and see the world as others do. The idea that people who think differently to you, or have different priorities to you are either too stupid to understand or ‘asleep’ is patronising, and a bit silly. Particularly as it’s likely he just wants his own following, rather like the ‘celebs’ he professes to despise. Let out the facts (didn’t spot many) and let people decide for themselves.

Bog standard disenfranchised white male, I suspect.

WestSouthWest · 21/08/2022 08:15

I have a family member who has fallen down this rabbit hole. He’s gone from occasionally engaging with content like this, to spending every waking moment worrying about it and basically prepping for the imminent collapse of Western civilisation. It’s putting a lot of strain on the family and we are all quite worried about him.

I mean this kindly OP, because the world is an uncertain and chaotic place at the moment and people are anxious, fearful and worn down. I think it’s natural for some people to look for a great conspiracy or ‘shadowy’ cabal to blame for things that are outside our control. People have been creating conspiracy theories about the freemasons, the gods, the new world order, the illuminati, banking families, Bilderberg etc for years. The WEF stuff is just the latest bogeyman.

Being human, I think that Neil Oliver is just as susceptible to this sort of catastrophic thinking as anyone else. Just because he’s on the tv and can string a sentence together very well, doesn’t mean we should take anything he has to say at face value.

donquixotedelamancha · 21/08/2022 08:19

Can't believe I was silly enough to waste my time reading that rant.

If you think that messy mix of stating the obvious and rambling paranoia is insightful, OP, then you must find life quite hard work.

You haven't been taken for a fool, the world is just very complicated.

FOJN · 21/08/2022 08:23

I think some of the responses you've received rather prove his point. He raises valid questions about some obvious contradictions, I don't think it's unreasonable to seek answers. He was inviting people to question things rather than accept what they are told, I think that's a good thing.

Anyone even mildly curious should be wondering about things like why energy suppliers are posting record profits whilst we, the consumers, are seeing our bills rise at an alarming rate. Is the war in Ukraine the whole story or is it a convenient cover for putting more share holders pockets?

I remember people dismissing news about a lab leak in Wuhan as a conspiracy theory. I think people have a tendency to reject anything which undermines their sense of safety and security. Just because something seems unbelievable it doesn't mean it isn't true.

I consume news from a wide range of sources and treat the information I read and hear with an open minded healthy scepticism, we should be doing that rather than ignore opinions which don't fit our world view. I don't think I have answers or an explanation for the changes we are seeing in the world but I have plenty of questions.

daisychain01 · 21/08/2022 08:23

I haven't got the foggiest who the person is or what he has to say for himself but just reading he appears to be pro-Trump is quite enough to know I don't want to find out.

people like the sound of their voice far too much and social media is their dangerous weapon of choice - does he think his opinion is going to save the universe. >sigh<

Delusional.

NotMyDust · 21/08/2022 08:24

@knittingaddict I suppose history has shown us that when times get hard opportunities for this kind of thing abound.

shazzybazzy34 · 21/08/2022 08:24

He definitely raises valid questions regardless.

Harridan1981 · 21/08/2022 08:25

When I saw it was Neil Oliver I assumed it was some kind of Coast rehash. I was disappointed.

RedHelenB · 21/08/2022 08:38

If he's pro Trump, I don't get ir. He's one very rich guy who's buying up loads of real estate.
What's the solution BTW, once we've opened our eyes and minds? Peasants of the world unite you have nothing to lose but your chains?

crossstitchingnana · 21/08/2022 08:38

If the powers to be want to ruin society and have us all poor, then they won't make any more money as we won't be able to buy shit.

ClaudineClare · 21/08/2022 08:39

So we have shadowy forces that are powerful enough to be secretly doing whatever it is the likes of NO think they are doing.

Why aren't these all powerful shadowy forces shutting down the people shouting about their dastardly secret plans on YouTube and Mumsnet etc? Perhaps they are not so powerful after all...

MistyFuckingQuigley · 21/08/2022 08:44

I mean he's spouting shite but his use of the phrase "non binary crisps" is inspired 🤣

MistyFuckingQuigley · 21/08/2022 08:45

I used tolike him on Coast too, what happened Neil?!

queenMab99 · 21/08/2022 08:48

I don't think it is a conspiracy, but greed, selfishness and hunger for power and influence, have risen to the top, so the results will be the same. The pandemic has provided opportunities for a morally barren government to enrich themselves and their friends. The government we have, has been voted in by a population who are voting for their own induvidual enrichment, without regard for the good of the community, or a more widespread well being.

Albgo · 21/08/2022 08:48

Aishah231 · 21/08/2022 06:44

I think it's a really powerful piece OP. Thanks for sharing.

🤣🤣

ZenNudist · 21/08/2022 08:49

I'm not wasting my time reading or watching crazies on the Internet. Suggest you stop watching such shite. I'm not sure how to advise you to improve your critical thinking skills. Best thing is just don't watch this nonsense.

Or .... make a tinfoil hat...

lljkk · 21/08/2022 08:53

Funny, I recall loads of energy suppliers going bankrupt in 2021-22.

i recently stayed (airBnB) at home of a conspiracy theorist. He would have been totally signed up to what NO says. I read thru some of the magazine/newspaper stuff my host had.

What struck me is that "they" speak broadly & emotionally, but they say almost nothing specific. Their argument is about feelings (mostly resentment) not demonstrable facts, and certainly not facts that stick together. Loads of non-sequitor linkages as long as they support the feelings. "Covid vaccines don't work" with "Hunter Biden's laptop", and "rising energy costs" and "Bill Gates buys things". I May as well in same breath discuss covid vaccines and the guy who stood in front of a combine harvester the other day, and whoever won a swimming contest at European Championship and something to do with Mar-a-Lago raid on Trump. I mean, those topics are all about as related to each other, as long as i can find one emotional theme to tie together.

i am wondering if Russians are somehow funding a lot of the CTers, because that would explain the renewed obsession with talking about Hunter Biden. Odd they haven't got back to "Hilary's emails!" yet.

KermitlovesKeyLimePie · 21/08/2022 08:56

@NotMyDust Quite. Hence religion.

SkirridHill · 21/08/2022 09:01

Conspiracy theories have always abounded, especially during difficult times. During the Plague, people thought "foreigners" were poisoning the water supply.

It's just fear - feeling that fear, and passing it on to everyone else so you're not along in your fear. The reality is, the world is chaotic and shit and unfair. We are on the outer edges of the climate crisis, the rich are (predictably) getting richer and the poor getting poorer: same as it ever was.

Agree with a PP that there's been a proliferation of this sort of bollocks on here recently. NO is, to put it mildly, a cunt.

MayThe4th · 21/08/2022 09:03

Ah yes. GB news. That paragon of good reporting.

This thread is clearly conspiracy pedalling spam.

MayThe4th · 21/08/2022 09:04

And no. I haven’t watched/read it. It’s all bollocks.

stayathomegardener · 21/08/2022 09:05

Thanks for sharing @Indoctro shockingly there's nothing there I disagree with.

And as a UK farmer I can clarify that amazingly there is no encouragement for a dig for victory movement which would make so much sense plus yes we are now being offered financial incentives to sell up and leave the industry entirely
