Have you watched this video by Neil Oliver

AIBU to start believing he actually has a valid point. I am not normally part of the tin foil hat brigade but I most definitely have been starting to question what's been going on recently

I'd be interested to hear other people views on this subject.

Thanks

Every time I see a clip of something from GB News, I find myself wondering if the GB stands for Gone Bonkers.

It's a weird channel that seems to love the far-right fringe, eg Wootton, Tominey, Farage, and consequently I feel disinclined to take anything on there seriously.

If you see what’s happened with Fox and Trump in the US it’s dangerous to underestimate the harm it can cause. The ‘I saw it on tv’ factor gives credibility to conspiracy theorists.

Well, us proles owning nothing would mean the end of capitalism. I can't see many Western governments buying into that as a way forward.

The rich elites will own everything and you will rent want you need of them. They don't want you the pleb to own things like a house or a car. Just like they don't want Dutch farmers to own their land.

Why has the "rich elite" suddenly come to this conclusion? What do you mean by the "rich elite", who are they, what are their names?

EmmaH2022 · 21/08/2022 12:36

Wallaw "Agree with the previous poster who said the basis of all of this is corruption not conspiracy"

yes. But mentioning corruption and economic planning gets you labelled a CT. Apparently even referencing well known organisations gets you labelled a CT.

many of us aren't claiming conspiracy but we are repeatedly told that we are.

FlorettaB · 21/08/2022 12:38

If you watch The Daily Show, Stephen Colbert or John Oliver you’ll see the kind of stuff Fox News gives airtime to. It’s not accidental - it’s the purpose of the station. I really hoped that it wouldn’t happen here but it looks like it’s already started.

FOJN · 21/08/2022 12:38

But 'they' can already switch off your wifi and electricity if you haven't paid the bill, and we accept that. The fridge is useless without those things, so surely whether you own it or not is ultimately beside the point?

Paying for a consumable and intangible utility is what we do because you can't take delivery of a case of electricity. People who achieve their dream of living off grid do not have those costs. Renting items such as fridges means you will never not have to pay for its use and that cost will be subject to inflation. When you buy an item the cost of use does not rise because it was fixed at the point of purchase. If you cannot buy a fridge outright then you are at the mercy of the owner and what they want to charge. It's why most people are so keen to buy a house rather than rent one.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 21/08/2022 12:39

Perhaps add economic incentives to the 'any fool can become a sage to the unthinking' - 'any fool can become rich by appearing a sage to the unthinking' and some corporations can make billions monetising the chaos in aggregate

Very much agree with you, Zilla, and will risk saying that perhaps the real fools here are those who choose not to see it

It's not just corporations either; politicians of every stripe too often prioritise the accumulation of benefits for themselves above all else, but point this out about any particular one and you'll be attacked by those of a more tribal mentality

I would have thought that as an academic, Oliver would know how to apply Hanlons razor. Seems he's gone the full Icke ....

Hanlons razor is a thought terminating cliche that came from a joke book.

HoppingKangaroo · 21/08/2022 10:33

It is called the Great Reset - you will own nothing and be happy. Klaus Schwab head of the WEF has written a book on it. They don't want you owning private property, they don't want you owning or using a car, they don't want you eating meat.
They are trying to put Dutch farmers out of business demanding some half their herd. All in the name of global warming because too much nitrogen when Dutch farmers are some of the most sustainable farmers in the world. They also export alot of food for such a small country. The Dutch government just want the farmers land.

@HoppingKangaroo what does not eating red meat have to do with it?

fruitbrewhaha · 21/08/2022 12:47

Ok. So I think generally antisemitism is on the rise. I'm in the UK, so less so here but in the US.

I don't believe the great reset conspiracy theory is itself antisemitic in the same way i don't think that that GC people are homophobic, some are but most are not. There will be people questioning those in power and counting up how many are Jewish and concluding that there is a zionist plot at work, or it could just be that there are Jewish people people in powerful positions in banking but it's got got anything to do with it. Doesn't mean the whole theory is incorrect.

ClaudineClare · 21/08/2022 12:47

Under the Great Reset thingy, what will be the cut off point for not being able to own anything? Will everyone be stripped of their goods or only those that have under a certain amount of wealth? How rich will you have to be to qualify for "rich elite" status?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 21/08/2022 12:47

I genuinely wish I could believe this much thought went into anything… as opposed to just the complete general incompetence and blundering on which is the truth

I take your point, RJnomore, but actually it all falls into place where self interest in the only motivator

Seen from the perspective of people only interested in scrabbling at the trough, the incompetence is inevitable because they simply have no engagement beyond their own interests

sussexman · 21/08/2022 12:48

It's nuts OP.

Zilla1 · 21/08/2022 12:50

@Puzzledandpissedoff agreed. For the PPs who see no different between subscription and purchase, one difference is that I can read the book, watch the DVD, listen to the CD, use the fridge, drive the car, use the mobile once I own them and even when the connectivity goes down. Try doing that when the subscription service stops being paid for or isn't available. One key test is whether the item can be re-sold. Even if e-books can be read offline, does Amazon facilitate the resale of e-books? Now i know that technically selling hard copies isn't allowed but in practice it happens.

Our government are undoubtedly corrupt, do not practice what they preach and are lining the pockets of large corporations. This is something I've come to accept over the past few months and it makes me very sad. BUT ... to suggest they're part of a huge world wide conspiracy is bonkers. As is some of the most powerful and intelligent people in the world would team up with popstars and Hollywood celebrities in order to create a new world order. And if there was such a huge conspiracy going on do you seriously think there would not be one person amongst this group who would have a conscience and release their evidence of this to reputable news sources (even if it meant certain death) or that would somehow let slip to a close friend or family member who would in turn out them. And if you think these news sources would block it because they're all in on it too do you not think there would be one person who works there who would find a way to release it anyway. Of course there is large scale corruption and selfish people in charge of our country but the stuff spouted by this man is absolute madness.

HoppingKangaroo · 21/08/2022 12:53

What do you mean by the "rich elite", who are they, what are their names? You want me to name all the rich elites 🙄Well Bill gates is now the largest private farmland owner in america. Investment firms are buying up lots of houses. In 2020 the biggest welfare transfer in history happened - billionaires increased their wealth by more than a quarter (27.5%) at the height of the crisis from April to July in 2020. The very rich will get richer and you the middle and working class will get poorer.

Do you think if this protest took place in China or Russia it would last any longer than an hour? With military involved? So they were bloody lucky to be in a democratic country like Canada.

Yes let's be more like China & Russia 🙄

@goshy let’s ignore examples of real authoritarianism and a perfectly valid and reasonable explanation of why Trudeau/Canada is not one and doesn’t act like one 🙄

Puzzledandpissedoff · 21/08/2022 12:59

does Amazon facilitate the resale of e-books?

I honestly don't know, but even as an avid reader I've never used one; there's just something about the pleasure of holding a tangible book I can't forego - or perhaps it's that thing in me that prefers to own something and maked my own decisions!!

Good grief.

Hypothetically I agree with the idea that people's viewpoints shouldn't be dismissed, and engaging in debate is the best way to counter misinformation etc.

But it is infinite, as soon as you've disproved one they'll come back with another 5, never bothering to acknowledge the replies they got for tthe first load.

you really are not!

Misunderestimated · 21/08/2022 13:10

Some interesting points of view here.

I personally think that governments of all stripes, across the globe made a grave error by applying the single word 'Vaccine' to what are 'Experimental vaccines'.

I've had every jab offered and accept the risks that come with them, but vaccines are (to quote Wikipedia) "a biological preparation that provides active acquired immunity to a particular infectious disease." That is not what any of the injections against Covid that I have received offered.

The vaccines for Diptheria, Tetanus, Polio etc are important for public health. Allowing a narrative that the most quickly and widely distributed 'vaccines' do not prevent the vaccinated from catching or spreading an illness is not the best way to to encourage the reluctant. As has been seen in London recently, unprotected people can be a danger to themselves and others.

I agree about the motivator.

it’s not a designed conspiracy though, it’s a rabble of people out to serve their own interests. And some who genuinely aren’t btw - but it’s always been like this. Social media and the internet just makes it more visible.

ClaudineClare · 21/08/2022 13:11

Flat04 no, you don't understand! Gaggenau and Miele and GE and Frigidaire and SubZero etc. will move to a Brighthouse/Radio Rentals model of business. Why they have not done this already is beyond me, as according to posters on here, renting out their products will be vastly more efficient and profitable than selling them outright.

onedayiwillmissthis · 21/08/2022 13:11

So, those of you who think that our Governments are incapable...couldn't organise a piss up in a brewery...can you not consider that our Governments no longer have the ultimate say?

The decisions taken by The Vanguard Group Inc. and Blackrock Inc. shouldn't be ignored. Their effects are very far-reaching...and the members of their boards are far more 'competent' than our MP"s.

EmmaH2022 · 21/08/2022 13:13

Wallaw "I guess it depends on how, and in what context, the two are being linked."

I've never claimed any of the examples you gave so can't relate.

but on MN and IRL, it seems the mere mention of organisations which exist, papers which exist, speeches which were on the news, people who exist and things they said in public, often in front of a very large audience, gets you labelled a CT.

there is something wrong in public discourse when that happens, and the influence it has in personal relationships.

sorry, I have strayed too far from Neil Oliver.

Ellami · 21/08/2022 13:15

Thanks for posting this OP because it’s useful to hear a range of perspectives.
He does have valid points, even if I don’t agree with all of them.
The idea that any of his points link in some way to anti-semitism is bizarre - there are conspiracies about everything out there, even including Paul McCartney.

I agree with the symptoms he’s describing, but feel the root cause of it all is much simpler - it’s human selfishness which has become rampant through the encouragement of capitalism. The government doesn’t have our interests at heart because it’s made up of people who are wanting to make as much money for themselves as possible, because money ensures survival and superiority. Medicines are made for profit, not altruism. Everything is pitched at removing money from our wallet to enrich someone else and damn the consequences for them or the environment.

Sadly, too many people in this world are vain, shallow and in thrall to the need to be ‘better’ than others. That’s not a conspiracy. Anyone thinking the Covid vaccine was safe and well researched with no hidden injuries, deaths or burying of research is kidding themselves - and I say that as someone who is triple vaccinated.
