Have you watched this video by Neil Oliver

AIBU to start believing he actually has a valid point. I am not normally part of the tin foil hat brigade but I most definitely have been starting to question what's been going on recently

I'd be interested to hear other people views on this subject.

Thanks

Bring on teaching critical thinking in schools please...

I couldn't agree more. Let's have more actual engagement with what people say, attempts to look for nuance and detail rather than moving immediately to dismissal, chastising and attempts to embarrass and shame which are so prominent on SM and increasingly in RL.

Throughout history the world has always been run by and for the elites. Corruption abounds and none of them give a shit about the lives of the majority. It’s a very small world right at the top and very incestuous. All recommending each other for positions of power, all giving contracts and jobs to their cronies. Nothing will ever change that.

The elite don’t worry about energy prices, state education, state healthcare, redundancies, mortgages etc. People feel angry but powerless. It’s not a conspiracy as such but just greed.

ItsAllUptoUsNow · 21/08/2022 12:06

I agree with @Theluggage15, he's not really saying anything new.

It just sounds like taxi-driver politics to me (on a very long ride!).

Crinkle77 · 21/08/2022 12:06

He's got a point about where the electricity comes from to power electric cars and I agree about net zero being a bit of a con. So it's ok to continue to spew out a load of crap in to the atmosphere as long as it's offset with something else?

SerendipityJane · 21/08/2022 12:06

It was definitely reported on the BBC.

Lots of things are reported on the BBC that millions miss. How about the source Thames moving 5 miles this year ? Never been recorded before in 12 millennia. Not mentioned here - trumped by grumbles over airbnb properties.

And since Oliver is (or used to be) a decent historian, here's some history that's not being talked about

bigthink.com/strange-maps/hunger-stones-europe/

That's out past calling out to us, and warning us. Who's listening ? No one here, it seems.

Zilla1 · 21/08/2022 12:09

I do smile at those who introduce themselves as 'not part of the tin foil hat brigade' then have an array of custom-fitted tin hats they whip off the shelf instantly. Sometimes people can't help but reveal themselves. The psychology is interesting. Much like 419 scams with obvious spelling mistakes to encourage self-selection and reduce wasted effort.

This is it, this is what I do not understand.

How and why on earth do you think all the countries in the world would shift to some kind of giant state capitalism? Do you think companies like Apple, Microsoft etc. would happily convert their empires into some sort of global Radio Rentals?

Well we used to buy DVD's and CD's and now we subscribe to streaming services.

Why do you think it won't be possible with other things? Do you think the internet connectivity of a fridge is only about consumer convenience? No, they'll be able to loan you the fridge and switch it off via WiFi if you haven't paid your subscription fee.

FOJN · 21/08/2022 12:12

EmmaH2022 · 21/08/2022 12:00

Wait a minute

are you saying you CAN'T see the appeal to business of them owning more licences, more hardware, more resources, and effectively selling a subscription rather than a product?

and many companies already operate that way to a large extent.

i'm slightly at a loss to explain the increased profitability if you can't see it automatically?

EmmaH You're a much faster typist than me!

Some products are already rented out or on a subscription basis, so it is not a new model. The question to consider then is
if renting out products instead of selling them outright is generally more profitable, why aren't lots of businesses already doing that for all their products?

Numbat2022 · 21/08/2022 06:30

I managed three minutes.

You are being unreasonable to watch Neil Oliver. The man is a deluded conspiracy theorist who makes a living off scaring people.

However, there is no doubt we have the worst government we've ever had, run by people who have absolutely no interest in helping or improving things for the people of this country. They are corrupt, they use their power to help their friends and Tory party donors make money, and they only want to stay in power to continue the gravy train.

Schemes like net zero are not the problem. We need a government who will invest huge amounts of money in renewable energy - wind farms, solar farms, solar panels on every new house, etc etc. We need a government who will think long term and do the best thing for the country in 50+ years, not just think about their term in government.

The problem is the Tory party, and the imbeciles who are currently running it (who have always been there, just better hidden).

I agree with this. Though I did watch to the end. It’s a worry that GB news have unscrupulous viewers who will start to believe the whole shebang about conspiracies… Because it’s a powerless position (what are they planning, revolution?! Or just joining endless dots to make patterns, while moaning about it all) when there are things we could all be doing or not doing (strikes) to change the sorry state of affairs. GE now!
He brings in the raid on Trump, as if that’s unfair because others didn’t get raided.. so I guess he’s a Trump fan…😑

I think some of the responses you've received rather prove his point. He raises valid questions about some obvious contradictions, I don't think it's unreasonable to seek answers. He was inviting people to question things rather than accept what they are told, I think that's a good thing.

Anyone even mildly curious should be wondering about things like why energy suppliers are posting record profits whilst we, the consumers, are seeing our bills rise at an alarming rate. Is the war in Ukraine the whole story or is it a convenient cover for putting more share holders pockets?

I remember people dismissing news about a lab leak in Wuhan as a conspiracy theory. I think people have a tendency to reject anything which undermines their sense of safety and security. Just because something seems unbelievable it doesn't mean it isn't true.

I consume news from a wide range of sources and treat the information I read and hear with an open minded healthy scepticism, we should be doing that rather than ignore opinions which don't fit our world view. I don't think I have answers or an explanation for the changes we are seeing in the world but I have plenty of questions.

@FOJN

why energy suppliers are posting record profits whilst we, the consumers, are seeing our bills rise at an alarming rate
because they can. Because governments are corrupt and allow them to so. Many people in government enter a revolving door of private/public jobs and they make their money in the private world whilst having allowed things to be beneficial to private companies/corporations whilst in government, rather than people and country. Eg Rex Tillerson, for an energy focused example.
it doesn’t have to be nefarious world wide domination shit. It’s corruption. It‘s simple. Maybe it’s because I come from a “third world/developing” country (or whatever other label an eurocentric world view chooses), where this is, infuriatingly, v common, that I see it as simple corruption as it’s always existed.

HoppingKangaroo · 21/08/2022 12:17

DrBlackbird
protesters wore Trump and MAGA hats Some of them wore hats supporting orange man so that means they all should be lumped together and don't have the right to protest.
So they were bloody lucky to be in a democratic country like Canada Yes forcing people to take the vaccine otherwise they are a second class citizen and can't work or access certain services and freezing protestors bank accounts is very democratic. How dare people want to have a right to bodily autonomy. Yes we should be more like China and just bring out the tanks so the plebs don't step out of line with silly notions of freedom and liberty.

And the dutch farmer protestors should just half their herd and go out of business like the government wants because the government wants their land. How dare they take any action to prevent it - just do as the government says you pleb!

you might as well ask why subscription streaming models didn't exist before they did.

you seem very determined to ignore any questions, so I will leave you in peace now.

User8273738273737 Exactly. Occam's Razor. I think the reason some people prefer to scrabble for outlandish theories to explain the mess we are in is because they voted for this corrupt bunch of criminals.

Have you not heard of electric cars? Peak oil was in the 1970's . I think you need a rest.

Peak oil for the USA was in the 1970's. Peak oil for the rest of the world was about 2008, depending on how you technically define 'oil'.

The electricity that fuels electric cars is generated almost entirely from fossil fuels. The factories that make the electric cars are fuelled almost entirely from fossil fuels.

FlorettaB · 21/08/2022 12:22

It’s not really surprising that he’s been invited onto GB news. It was created to be a U.K. version of Fox News, home of conspiracy theorists.

ShandaLear · 21/08/2022 12:25

Jeez, what a load of rambling, evidence free, twaddle. He really has jumped the shark. Surely people aren’t this gullible?

Zilla1 · 21/08/2022 12:25

Occam's razor. Ipse Dixit. Falsification. For some people, they're not a patch on 'watch this video by an 'expert' and do your own research, scratch the surface and don't believe MSM because it's what 'they' want you to believe.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 21/08/2022 12:25

I thought that the centre was where most people were, where did the possibility of reasoned debate weighing up the pros and cons go to? What happened to finding common ground?

I totally agree with Bluebells that the difference is the internet, and especially social media where any fool can become a sage to the unthinking

Like all tools it can be used for good or ill, and the "echo chamber" thing which some seem to enjoy all too much can be very dangerous

FlorettaB · 21/08/2022 12:26

It’s a fun read. Apparently trying to slow down climate change is a cunning plan to clear the riff-raff from nice holiday spots.

LakieLady · 21/08/2022 12:27

Every time I see a clip of something from GB News, I find myself wondering if the GB stands for Gone Bonkers.

It's a weird channel that seems to love the far-right fringe, eg Wootton, Tominey, Farage, and consequently I feel disinclined to take anything on there seriously.

Zilla1 · 21/08/2022 12:28

Perhaps add economic incentives to the 'any fool can become a sage to the unthinking' - 'any fool can become rich by appearing a sage to the unthinking' and some corporations can make billions monetising the chaos in aggregate.

HoppingKangaroo · 21/08/2022 12:29

Well, us proles owning nothing would mean the end of capitalism. I can't see many Western governments buying into that as a way forward.

The rich elites will own everything and you will rent want you need of them. They don't want you the pleb to own things like a house or a car. Just like they don't want Dutch farmers to own their land.

RJnomore1 · 21/08/2022 12:30

I genuinely wish I could believe this much thought went into anything… as opposed to just the complete general incompetence and blundering on which is the truth. Conspiracy theorists credit people in government with far too much thought power.

The business model for renting products like TVs, washing machines to consumers has existed for a long, long time. Companies still generally prefer to sell products to consumers rather than rent them out. Why?
