I know, I am in the wrong because I parked wrong. For 2 minutes only, but nonetheless- wrong.

I was getting back into my car and this lady starts charging at me- I had both my Babies in the car. She starts screaming at me ' you can't park here, you can't park here. ' I put my hands up and say ' I know I'm sorry I'm sorry. ' She continues charging at my car. At this point I got scared and again said 'I am sorry and it won't happen again. '

I jumped into my car and locked the doors and she starts banging on my window, at which point - I again say ' look I understand and I won't park here again'.

Only then did she finally let off and I drove away.

Isn't that a bit of an extreme reaction ? I would never do that. Fair enough if I had got angry back, but I immediately apologised and backed down and she just kept going. She really scared me.

It depends for how long, we don't know how long this driver had his door open. If you're jumping out to check the front tyre because of a potential issue, for example, it's less time consuming to leave the door open.

But still stupid and dangerous - if they were only doing it for a few seconds, they'd surely have seen a blind person and dog, and a few seconds is all it takes to cause injury. In reality, probably left it open simply due to laziness whilst they were loading/unloading or going into a pie shop.

Your poor OH, but lorries are allowed to stop on double yellows to load or unload, so someone "blowing their stack" at a lorry driver for it would be completely in the wrong.

Depends on the double yellows, some are marked no loading.

Ihatemyroad · 29/09/2022 19:35

You shouldn’t have parked there.

She shouldn’t have lost the plot like she did.

I parked near my children’s primary school entrance last week. It’s on a residential cul de sac and every house has a drive. I dropped off and came back to my car with my 2 year old and was met by an elderly man who walked towards me, pointed his finger at me and said “If I see you parked by my fucking drive again I will damage your fucking car and block you in for the day, I’m warning you!” I was SO shocked! I wasn’t blocking his drive, I wasn’t an inch over his drive!

I have no idea why he reacted like that.

Sometimes people go nuts and although it’s directed at you, you’re just the catalyst, it isn’t really about you.

StoodOnAPlug · 29/09/2022 19:45

Under Section 5 of the Public Order Act 1986, I think she is guilty of the offence of causing you harassment, alarm or distress. I would have called the police.

Saving time isn't a real justification for endangering other people is it.

Not doubting your experience OP, but I have deja vu reading this. I'm sure something similar happened to someone about a year ago. Same sort of reaction from random woman, and the OP had a baby in the car.
Perhaps it's the same area? I can't find the original thread now.

Was it not this one about 6 weeks ago?

Well the last line tells me your opinion of lorry drivers. I've seen plenty car drivers do it too, I wouldn't say it's stupid. Awful that the poster's husband was hurt, but leaving your door open facing the pavement isn't usually overly dangerous or stupid.

Peanuts2000 · 29/09/2022 19:50

What is it with people and cars. I was driving this afternoon in a residential area where I live when a van came driving towards me on the wrong side of the road then parked on the pavement meaning I had to swerve over. He was shouting at me to get out of the way saying he was indicating although he was driving on the wrong side and he should have given way. As he was shouting at me from the van I pulled down my window, asking him what he was doing, he then proceeded to swear telling me to f**k off. He looked like a delivery driver, unfortunately I didn't have my dashcam on but have got the registration in case I see him again and find out who he works for. I was shaken at the time but now angry as I bet he wouldn't have spoken to a man like that.

MagsR2356 · 29/09/2022 20:08

Someone i know screamed at someone on double yellow, however she nearly reversed straight onto a five year old child and it was near a school! Maybe the lady in question had something bd happen to her, or someone she knew and that’s why she reacted so extremely.

shouldbesleepingnotscrolling · 29/09/2022 20:09

What is it with some people being so entitled these days, its always “I was just…” or “Its only for….” “I needed to…” like its ok because rules dont apply to them because of said excuse. Rules are in place for a reason.

Unless a genuine emergency, just dont do it.

For a crying baby, drive on a bit until you find an actual safe place to stop. The baby will be fine for a few more minutes.

Iliveonahill · 29/09/2022 20:17

Perhaps her father’s funeral hearse was expected to pick up her mother and family. I would have done the same. Who knows. But people always have an excuse when parking illegally.

Jjones8 · 29/09/2022 20:19

Don’t park on double yellow lines. You never know, maybe she experienced a terrible accident due to cars parked on double yellows. They are there for a reason. Good on that lady.

FixTheBone · 29/09/2022 20:33

Totally legitimate.

Her reaction has hopefully reduced the chances of yourself and others parking illegally in future.

Ahsoka2001 · 29/09/2022 20:43

Hope it felt good for her to exert a bit of good old dominance over a nervous stranger. I swear some wait ages for a chance of sweet authority

MagsterMum · 29/09/2022 20:49

Everyone talking about safety etc...blue badge holders can legally park on double yellow lines for up to 3 hours as long as there are no other restrictions in place. I know OP never mentioned anything about being a blue badge holder, but kind of throws everyone's anger over 'safety' out of the window if i

Energydrink · 29/09/2022 20:59

You shouldn’t have parked there, but she definitely should not have acted so aggressively- no excuses!

I have parked on a double yellow whilst my daughter was having an asthma attack. She has no idea why you are there and should mind her own business or conduct herself with a not of decorum

Energydrink · 29/09/2022 21:00

*were

Energydrink · 29/09/2022 21:01

Bit of decorum*

Mythreefavouritethings · 29/09/2022 21:07

Unanananana · 18/08/2022 20:48

So why did you park there?

How does this take us forward? OP made a mistake, the other person was OTT but no one's disputing OP was in the wrong. So shall we have a night off from the usual lectures and finger-pointing?

Kite22 · 29/09/2022 21:10

girlfriend44 · 18/08/2022 20:41

She probably passed off with it happening all the time. Sorry dosent really cut it when it happens all the time. Hate it when.ppl say only 2 minutes as well
You shouldn't park there for any length of time.

This ^

I've had that said to me so many times when people block my drive to go to the local dentist. Angry

Seriously never doing that again. Freaked me out big time !

Good. It worked then.

Fimofriend · 29/09/2022 21:26

Stop parking on double yellow lines! They are there for a reason! If you don't understand that you shouldn't be allowed to drive at all! The traffic rules are not F..... optional!

UrslaB · 29/09/2022 21:31

I think you got off lucky if this woman was snapping because you were perhaps the straw that broke the camel's back for people parking illegally on double yellows. Sometimes people just snap, and I think you were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Living in university there were double yellows all around our area. Students, staff, other people used to always park on double yellows outside this one residential house. The poor guy used to come out constantly and politely ask people to move, only to hear "Ah, sorry" "I know I am wrong but (insert excuse here, heard everything from just nipping into library to drop something off, to people saying they stopped to fix their bluetooth).

Anyway, coming out of lecture one day we saw a massive crowd and cop cars everywhere. The resident guy had finally snapped at having the millionth person park on the double yellows outside his house with their excuses and he went mad with a hammer. Bashed up the guys car and then went after the double yellow parker when he came back to his car.

You were in the wrong. So was this abusive woman, but if we are to give you the benefit of the doubt and 'understanding' then the ranting woman gets the same.

Meanderingpuppy · 29/09/2022 21:34

Obviously her behaviour was completely wrong, but it is also antisocial and also dangerous to park on double yellow lines. Just don't do it

Quveas · 29/09/2022 21:37

flowerpowder · 18/08/2022 20:52

I had to get something from the boot of my car because my baby was crying. Then I was just comforting Baby for a couple of minutes. I know, not ideal.

It started off at two minutes only. Now it is getting something from the boot AND comforting baby for a couple of minutes. How long were you actually parked on double yellows? And there were so many double yellows all over everywhere that you couldn't find anywhere at all that didn't have double yellows? Nowhere?

Sorry but maybe she was crazy about this, maybe she had a reason for reacting that way - but I have no sympathy at all because you shouldn't have been parked on double yellows. You don't get to call out someone else when you are the one in the wrong.

Readaboutyourself · 29/09/2022 21:38

Oh come off it all the angels on here. Stopping on a double yellow has to happen occasionally.

Nothing OP did justifies that response.
