Woman completely bollocked me for parking on double yellows..

I know, I am in the wrong because I parked wrong. For 2 minutes only, but nonetheless- wrong.

I was getting back into my car and this lady starts charging at me- I had both my Babies in the car. She starts screaming at me ' you can't park here, you can't park here. ' I put my hands up and say ' I know I'm sorry I'm sorry. ' She continues charging at my car. At this point I got scared and again said 'I am sorry and it won't happen again. '

I jumped into my car and locked the doors and she starts banging on my window, at which point - I again say ' look I understand and I won't park here again'.

Only then did she finally let off and I drove away.

Isn't that a bit of an extreme reaction ? I would never do that. Fair enough if I had got angry back, but I immediately apologised and backed down and she just kept going. She really scared me.

She pulled over for two minutes to comfort her crying baby. Would you rather she be in an accident because she was distracted because her child was distressed?

So you're OK with her possibly causing an accident because her baby was distressed and she pulled up on double yellows.

Double yellows do not indicate whether it is safe to stop. It's illegal to stop anywhere that causes a dangerous obstruction, whether there are lines, or not. Conversely, it is legal to stop on yellow lines in some circumstances.

The number of sanctimonious posters on this thread, telling off the OP, while not knowing the rules of the road themselves, is quite staggering.

Tomikka · 23/08/2022 18:26

For those who are still determined that stopping on a double yellow line is the most dangerous thing possible on the road …..

Please see the attached images.
This is an area of shops, close to housing and with flats above.
There are parking spaces and an area that is double yellow lined plus double yellow kerbed.
There is no safety element of this restriction, no impairment of traffic flow and it does not directly obstruct any dropped kerbs or access.
What the restrictions do is to disallow both parking & unloading to keep the area clear to allow clearance for turning at the end.

Maybe if more people behaved like her, the roads would be safer. Ok, you were taking 2 minutes in an emergency, but loads of people don't care at all so the assumption has to be that you are one of them instead of someone who is taking 2 minutes in an emergency. I wish everybody stood up to yellow line parkers.

What emergency”?

7KidsnoTV · 26/08/2022 16:42

Amiccissima you can park on doublle yellows for up to two hours with a blue badge

phishy · 26/08/2022 16:47

@7KidsnoTV

Even better - it’s 3 hours!

ZERO sympathy from me. My other half is blind. A couple of years ago he had a massive gash in his face (so much blood pouring down his face passers by stopped to help him) from a lorry door which was open whilst parked on double yellow lines. His guide dog didn't see it because it was so high so my SO walked straight into it.

"I'm only there for a couple of minutes"

"I'm just dropping something off"

Ten minutes later, not related to double yellow lines, someone had left a ladder out and he walked into that too.

So yeah, a culmination of events might actually lead someone to blow their stack at you, even if you think it's trivial in a far too ableist world.

No. Don't be so bloody selfish and entitled.

I'm sorry to hear about your husband's injury, but what has it got to do with yellow lines? Surely he would have knocked into the lorry door, wherever the lorry was parked?

As has already been said many times on this thread, yellow lines do not denote that it is unsafe to park. If they did, disabled drivers would not be allowed to park on them (which they can).

That would therefore have been a lorry legally parked on double yellow lines for the purpose of unloading, and the door was too high to be identified by the dog as a problem

Had it been an illegally parked car instead of a legally unloading lorry then his accident would not have happened

I wouldn't try and take that to the bank. As the guidance which comes with a blue badge says, you should always check local restrictions. And in any case you must not obstruct or cause a hazard.

That's exactly the point many posters are making, though. Yellow lines do not denote whether or not it is safe to stop.

The absence of yellow lines does not indicate that it is safe to stop - a driver still has to use her judgement. Most rural roads have no yellow lines; that doesn't mean you can park on a blind bend or cause an obstruction.

Conversely, the presence of yellow lines does not indicate that it is unsafe to stop, but there will certainly be some places where there are yellow lines, and it is also unsafe, e.g. too close to a junction.

RiftGibbon · 29/09/2022 18:06

Not doubting your experience OP, but I have deja vu reading this. I'm sure something similar happened to someone about a year ago. Same sort of reaction from random woman, and the OP had a baby in the car.
Perhaps it's the same area? I can't find the original thread now.

Cars not cats, cats can do as they please 🐈‍⬛

I adore the image in my head now, of dozens of cats of all colours being totally cat like parking themselves on double yellows and doing the "so what are you gonna do about it?" cat smirk.

sqirrelfriends · 29/09/2022 18:52

If OP had been the crazy lady screaming at someone for parking on double yellows you lot would be calling her a deranged lunatic.

OP, not a fan of double yellow parking but I think her reaction was way out of proportion. Honestly, if I got that mad everytime I saw someone park on double yellows I would have had a heart attack years ago.

Your poor OH, but lorries are allowed to stop on double yellows to load or unload, so someone "blowing their stack" at a lorry driver for it would be completely in the wrong.

It depends for how long, we don't know how long this driver had his door open. If you're jumping out to check the front tyre because of a potential issue, for example, it's less time consuming to leave the door open.

UnderCoverFieldAgent · 29/09/2022 19:10

How did she know you weren’t about to produce a Blue Badge, you can park on them with one of those. I have before.

Scianel · 29/09/2022 19:14

Here's the weird thing. DH has on occasion stopped on double yellows, generally to programme Waze or whatever. No woman has come screaming at him like a psycho.
I wonder why that could be?

EmpressoftheMundane · 29/09/2022 19:26
