Caveat - she’s been staying with us for 3 weeks and we can have a rather strained relationship so I MBU and not her.

She has a weird thing with food where she refuses to share with anyone - fine. But she will literally sit in the living room and eat bags of sweets and chocolate bars in front of the children and will not give even one to them. They are kind of used to it now but tonight we’d all gone out for dinner, came home, kids are washed and ready for bed, teeth brushed and she sits down and opens a big share bag of sweets and proceeds to pop one in her mouth every ten seconds.

Youngest starts complaining - told clearly “no these are nannies”. Silence in the living room except for the crunching of bloody sweets every 10 seconds 😡

We were always taught if you aren't willing to share something like a bag of sweets or something you don't open it up when others are around you. Same with the last of something we were taught to ask of anyone else wanted it first before diving into grab it and if 2 people wanted it then it was split between the 2 of you. Those of you unwilling to share would you also grab the biggest half of something if was to be split between 2 of you or would you let the other person have the bigger half?

Exactly this. It’s rude to sit and eat sweets in front of people and not offer them one!

she sounds delightful… and morbidly obese?

namechangetheworld · 14/08/2022 18:47

YANBU, that's bloody weird. She sounds greedy, as well as totally lacking in social awareness.

What a nasty comment

People can enjoy treats as part of a balanced diet and not be morbidly obese

Mamamia7962 · 14/08/2022 18:54

Y7drama - If something is split between 2 people like a cake, then one person cuts and the other person gets to choose first. Guarantee the portions will be equal to the millimetre!

stayathomer · 14/08/2022 20:09

We share but tell the kids if guests don’t offer you something you can’t ask but you’ll probably get something to make up for it later Not great of her not to share but it’s just one of those ‘everyone’s different’ things I suppose

I wouldn't want my kids to go off to university having been brought up to think it's fine to sit chomping their way through bags of sweets without offering to others in the room. The other students would rightly think they were rude and odd.

Not just friends, family, and guests now. I should also share my sweets with random other students that the university has made me live with who I don't even know. It's not like they can't go and buy their own sweets, why are these randoms entitled to mine?

Well, you can make friends at uni or be the weirdo scoffing bags of sweets in front of everyone.

I don’t think people realise ‘morbidly obese’ means that a person is so obese it is terminal and will kill them.

Highly doubt a pack of sweets a night does this to someone

It depends how many they’re eating. Some of those share bags have 1000/1500 calories in so if you’re eating one of those every night on top of a normal diet, you’ll soon pile on the pounds. Some people eat a lot of rubbish.

PollyRockets · 14/08/2022 21:48

@WorkinOnOurNightMoves

Which share bags are those

A share bag of malteasers is 480 calories

To get to the stage of ‘morbid obesity’ takes a hell of a lot lore than 1000 calories in treats per day

SunnySwirl · 14/08/2022 21:55

That’s so unkind. I end up giving my DC whatever they fancy off my plate!! But I don’t like sharing with friends, so would usually buy extra. Like my best friend never wants her own chips or coke, but would happily eat/drink mine. So then I started ordering 2 😂

You could put on half a stone a month if they were excess calories, it wouldn’t take long at all.

A share bag of malteasers is 480 calories

The share bags of munchies and buttons.

Just looked online, the share bags of maltesers have over 500 calories in 100g and there’s nearly double that in the bag.

nosyupnorth · 14/08/2022 22:30

So if somebody else is present it's forbidden to eat unless you've catered for everyone??

@WorkinOnOurNightMoves

The share bags of malteasers are 102g

Share bag of buttons - 125g and thus 670 calories

So please do share these 1500 calorie bags of chocolate

As the ones named aren't it

PollyRockets · 14/08/2022 22:43

They're the mega bags

For 6 people

Normal share bags are half this size

The description says share bag, so they are share bags. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I said ‘Some of those share bags have 1000/1500 calories in so if you’re eating one of those every night on top of a normal diet, you’ll soon pile on the pounds.‘

Why are you sweating in a discussion about chocolate. 🤭

WorkinOnOurNightMoves · 14/08/2022 22:47

swearing...but you may be sweating as well.

I don’t think many people realise how unhealthy their relationship with food seems to be - a key symptom is also obsessing about what other people eat!
